Interesting thread, always good to flush out these ideas of how to get people involved. Jeff, have you read Nick’s thread about toothless the dragon? It’s a feat of engineering and pretty ground breaking when it comes to the VG30 development in the UK, I reckon a man of your caliber would find it pretty interesting.

He’s read it numerous times.... just a voyeur when it comes high performance VG building

OK,

But then it looks like there is fresh content that people can see by looking at the thread titles.

For the new members all they see is one big thread title.

It may be all in there but much like Facebook you can't follow a particular part your interested in.

One of the things I hate about Facebook is its linear format.

I feel we are changing to that style of format which is bad for this club.

I see your point but just worried members will just not post anything if its not there.

There were apparently two big turning points with FB, the change to the wall to target things relivant to you and the like button. Zukerberg was very apposed tobthat like button as he felt it would cause people to simply click without adding to content, the real reward of the like button was it’s ability to collect data about the clicker. Maybe the like button, nice as it is to click doesn’t work for this format?

What did you have in mind?

I wonder how larger proportion the current advertisers/sponsors raise towards the costs of the site? Obviously in the past there was money in the kitty, we all remember that buisness. Increased foot fall will help bring in advertisements. We’re have all the traders such as Japspeed gone?

Well they definitely have been here, done group buys etc. Same as Opie Oils. Also gone...

I'm sure Opie oils still do a 300zx discount I have ordered from them this year.

I've not looked at the traders recently some of them were questionable it seemed to be a thing at the time that anyone could become a trader.

For sure it kills new threads but they are still there in the big thread.

I've never posted in it as it it seems more like a conversation rather than a thread title that I'd look at and thing oh I'll read that it looks interesting or I might be able to add value on that. It's easier to remember where I had read up to as well if I'm away for a week rather than streaming back through pages.

Very interesting Thread by Jeff and just as interesting replies too..This club has seen many transitions good and bad along the years and i have been around to see most, the club currently is very well put together and run by true enthusiasts of the car and its this that keeps me logging in most nights for a stroll through the posts and threads that just about seem to keep the club alive. I must admit i think it is a massive shame that the new direction that the club steered seemed to cater for a biased thinking that "modified" and rough looking Zeds could not eat at the same table as the more OEM garage queen cars and maybe this has put a lot of people off buying and trying to preserve basket cases to present here that seem to litter towns up and down the country.I know of 2 at this present time and keep threatening my wife with another project or two which brings me closer to no dinners after work:D..I honestly cant offer any magic medicine for members lack of posting including mine but i will still be logging in every day in the hope that one day my fire may be relit and i can start a new "parts wanted" thread.

The responses in this thread itself prove that you cannot keep everyone happy.

If we vote on the "what did you do" thread and it comes out at 52% for 48% against, we will offend or upset half of the voters regardless of which decision is made.

Do we close it anyway, regardless that 52% voted to keep, just because the voices of the 48% are more frequent posters or more regular members?

The forum (all forums) are on a downward decline, purely because of Facebook and the like.

Always on, always available, easy to use, can access multiple interests at once, FREE.

FREE, apart from the really annoying adverts that everyone complains about but just puts up with.

People put up with it, because its free.

Multiple interests are covered as a snapshot, without having to go to dedicated web sites, but easy to go into a group, and back out of at will.

No forums can compete with that type of random access interest model.

What makes this a club and not just a website?

- The members.

- Helping each other, meeting up socially, arranging meets, giving advice, offering parts.

- Members make the community.

Yes all of this is also done on Facebook. Clubs exist on Facebook, or are they just groups of people using a common website?

It's about attitude, intent, commitment.

But human nature means that the majority of people will ALWAYS take the path of least resistance, or the lazy path, which is now Facebook.

The modern attention span is so short, it has to be constantly piqued by something new, something random, flitting from place to place.

It might seem like a clique in here sometimes, but that's just because it's always the same people that post regularly. Those same people that want to keep the club active, want to keep being part of a community, want to keep the forum as the resource that it is.

This applies to posting regularly, attending meets, organising meets. Some people keep on making the effort, keep on trying to make it work.

Are they just flogging a dead horse? Why bother? Because some of us like this old school approach to a community.

The problem is, Facebook has an ever growing fan base, as long as people are being born and integrated into the digital age from the moment they can use a touchscreen, and will cater for every interest.

We have an ever decreasing fanbase, which is a very focussed interest, which can only really start from age 16 or 17, and only for as long as the cars are still available to buy for a realistic price.

For pricing, we could change, and open up to an ad service as a side bar or in between thread posts like some other forums.

Maybe that's what we should do? We could vote on it, but again, regardless of the outcome, some members will be happy, some sad, some ambivalent.

Traders will never be interested in a forum that has a dozen regular posting members.

Yet we have 100's of members that visit.

The NEC voting thread, and others, often show lots of names coming out of the woodwork to vote, or view the post, but still not post.

There are even members that re-subscribe for multiple years and never post.

The information resource must be useful to them, and keeping it online and available is useful for them.

Some have been here through the good times, bad times, and back to the (hopefully) good times of committee changes, moderation team changes, big personality members, polarised views, etc.

I thank them for that, as there are far more of them than posting member renewals, and they are unsung heroes in my opinion.

There is no single right answer to how we keep the forum alive.

We can keep changing things, knee jerk or considered, to changing trends.

We can keep adding or removing privileges, permissions, value, etc

But from our experiences so far, there is no step change reaction to anything we do.

It can only be kept alive by people WANTING to keep it alive and using it.

This threads reminded me I need to resub, will get to it end of the month!

Anyway, I would consider myself sort of on the young side of the age scale with being 28. I am am member of here and also various zed related Facebook groups and the main differences I find is that the Facebook format is much more user friendly when browsing a page, threads are instantly available with pictures as soon as you reach the page and the marketplace is much more used due to the no listing or subscription fees attached.

I browse this place often, but my post count is pretty low, reasons being for this I'm not very technically accomplished so can't really offer any advice or help on threads. There is no way to fix this really, I'm the same on Facebook, some people just browse and that'll always be the way.

Personally to improve this place I'd get rid of the "What did you do to your zed" thread again as it's just too long to browse and keep up with. Make new threads for this stuff, will make site searching much easier too. Is there any sort of format change that could happen? Or is a forum basically always this layout?

The main advantage this place has over Facebook is the tech help and specialists who hang out here, great community too, even the drama is great. Facebook is simply more convenient and easy to browse, way more drama too (not good in this case).

Maybe we could look at any member (standard or premium) being allowed to buy and sell? I’m not currently on FB but do think that maybe I should join for the market.

As for the tech “how to” area. In my opinion it’s not easily found, a lot of links are out of date and they could do with being clearer. I would offer to help sort this out my my technical knowledge, as proven in my recent posts, is poor to say the least.

Other than that I really enjoy the close knit community (meeting other owners could be better but I think the typical owners age for our car is 30-40 and that’s prime family age which makes it hard), the format of the forum is relatively clear and it’s well managed.
