Advice needed on a 1986 Nissan 300ZX Twin Turbo Japanses import

Hi

I imported a 1986 300zx Twin turbo from Japan in 1990 and never drove it. It remained in dry storage until recently.

I have been advised that I should not just start and go, although the car ran perfectly in 1990. I need to recommission it. Questions:

1. What would need renewing/replacing considering that the car has stood still for 19 years.

2. Who would be the best person to do it

3. What sort of expense am I looking at?

4. What would be the value today as is, and is it easy to sell?

Many thanks

Hello, welcome to the forum.

A 1986 Twin Turbo? I think you mean single turbo unless it’s been converted to run either a different engine or had some other conversion. The Z32 was not manufactured in 1986, it would have been the Z31 model which was only available with a single turbo and a different engine on its turbo variant.

Would you be able to confirm?

1. I would recommend replacing all the fluids, all the belts and the tyres as a minimum and do the rest on condition as required.

2. The best person to do it would be a trip across the M4 to PowerZed on a trailer.

3. Contact PowerZed for a quote.

4. A 1986 300zx is a Z31 and as this club is dedicated to the Z32 300zx, you may not find anyone familiar with values. We can certainly help identify the mode and engine to clear up the issue regarding twin turbo or single turbo if you can pop up a couple of pics.

A 33 year old car that’s been stored for almost 30 years sounds like a bit of a time warp! Look forward to seeing some pictures.

Hi Joely

Thank you for your very helpful advice. My post was written way past midnight and the brain cells had taken their leave I am afraid. It is a 1992 car imported in UK in 1999. Apologies. Happy to load pictures - how do I go about it?

That engine bay certainly looks like it has been sitting for a while!

Looks like there is great potential once cleaned.

Cheers mate...good advice. What is your opinion on wheels - standard as now or bigger wider ones?

18" wheels look good but the oem standared wheels are making a come back imo. 25mm spacers on the front standard wheels also look good.

That looks like a decent car, very pleased to see it’s going to be loved once again. That’ll clean up wonderfully I reckon but you should focus on ensuring the mechanicals are tip top first and then you can tart it up afterwards.

If you’re doing it to sell, I would certainly keep the OEM wheels on it as it gives a potential buyer a clean, stock car to work with and if they want to modify it, they have a blank canvas.

Hi and welcome Stephen - and thank you again for your support in subbing!!

That does look like a tidy Zed mate; and as said earlier in your thread, get the car long to Jimmer at Powerzed, in Bristol for a full re-commissioning. Whilst routine maintenance (oil changes etc) should not be an issue for your local garage, Jimmer is the UK's Zed-Guru. He is the best person to give your car a full, honest appraisal and make sure you leave as another happy customer!!

I have something to say............ It's better to burn out than to fade away..... :tt2:

Nice clean looking Z good luck, great fun to drive.
