Halfords selling it at around £16/17 oil sale

Going to get a couple at that price.

Just to claify, the first link is for fully synthetic and this is not required, semi synthetic is more than enough, in fact what Garry has used is semi, as denoted by the can colour been white rather than silver.

not to sound stupid but why isnt full synthetic oil recommendesd for the vg30 engines. ive been using fs engine oil for at least a decade with no ill affects what so ever and im now adding engine treatments to further reduce friction and wear on startup. your saying this is bad for the vg30?

No not saying fully synthetic is a bad thing, just that the spec is in excess of requirement, given that the turbo engine oil should be changed every 5k miles then there is no need to over spend on long life oil.

Jeff

ok but why wouldnt you want to exceed oil specs for such an old engine? also fs doesnt mean longer life its a common fact here in australia. fs doesnt mean you can extended you service intervals. Im no oil engineer or even a mechanic but from what i know fs is the best oil you can put in any car with the best lubrication properties to protect the engine better then min or semi type oils. it also has much higher durability at high temperatures and i wouldnt put anything else in my z then fa but thats just my opinion so i was just curious why that was the geniune consensus. at least the weights you guys use are in factory spec. i run 10w50 so 10w40 pretty much the same. also i know castrol oils are made in malaysia in case thats not common knowledge amongst everyone here.

I’m with DJ on this, if Nissan were to be still manufacturing the VG30DETT today, even if it hadn’t changed in its design and tolerances, they would most certainly be using fully synthetic oil. The only time I would agree with Jeff about not having the piece of mind from FS oil would be if the owner just poodles about in the car as a daily driver, rarely giving it any beans, doesn’t live in a hot climate and is on a budget.

Your answering your own question right there ..old engine, old design, exceeding requirements does nothing, helps nothings just wastes money in my view, especially given a TT should have max 5k mikes oil change.

Fs oil main criterion is to stay in grade long... and aid longer service intervals on "modern" engines, car manufacturers use this to give some of this ludicrous service intervals common place on new cars 15,000 20,000 miles ...gulp !

One of the many issues we saw on a regular basis in the workshop when using fully synthetic oil was a distinct ability to increase oil leaks where any oil leak`s already existed, for that reason alone its not a good idea to change oil types after thirty years of using a different type, of course rebuilt engine`s may well be less subject to this, that said I still would not use it in a thirty year old engine, rebuilt or not.

Doesn't matter how new the oil is,there will always be friction inside an engine, small friction but it is there. If the engine is old,it's probably pretty worn(cams, bearings, rings),so why wouldn't you exceed the '90s requirements with something that could provide even less wearing?Even though I know it's over the requirements,I prefer to use only expensive oil to prevent any future engine rebuilds which will be expensive, much more expensive than the price difference I pay for the high quality oil.Anyway, the difference is like 10-15euros/gbp/dollars per oil change. If you buy a set of piston rings and a set of bearings it will be like 2-300,that's 20-30 oil changes.Really, the price difference is worth it.I use only Ester base oils, but I don't want to start a new discussion about this,I just think it is way over anything fully synthetic on the market.
