I see many owners building big power cars and often fitting huge brakes.:scared:

Thats great for posting threads on here and Facebook.

But can you use them??

Can you drive and stop quick??

Personally i dont think you can......:innocent:

So here is a chance to prove me wrong and make eat my words.

In the style of "Street Outlaws" Im calling you out!!:tt2:

Here is the challenge. Can you beat a 235bhp NA driven by an OAP??

Come to Donington. Aug 22 late afternoon for the evening track session.

I can manage 10 laps at a time.

How often in that 10 laps can you overtake me?? Once? Twice??

I will start a new thead in a lighter tone ......

Sorry Pete, it seemed to be a good gathering of people with varying ideas and set up and the right time to ask questions and get a better understanding of the 300zx braking capabilities.

Unfortunatly i already have plans or i would come and play too

Do all zeds have abs? I thought they didnt bother on the NAs as they didnt go fast enough to lock up?

Not all but most NAs did.

I do have a non abs zed but not really seen another zed without one!

Someone will know but there were a few variations of abs and bmcs

Cant even troll these days without being slapped down with serious conversation

Well you did ask a serious question [emoji23]
To continue the discussion, what would be the factor in making the brakes feel like new car's brakes, less soft and don't require you to stand on them to let you know their there.

Would it be BMC? The lines? Or just simply the calipers themselves?

Further to other responses...I have always thought the Z32 brakes unconvincing and certainly not like modern brakes...even though, as others have said, many modern brakes are over servo'd .

My Z32's calipers have been renovated with new seals and new vented discs installed with new pads...oh.. and a BMC bracket under the bonnet....but it still didn't 'feel' as effective as modern car brakes....and required excessive effort when driving enthusiastically (Lakes Weekend) ...because of this I was considering the merits of a BBK (as many others on here have opted for)....however....in an attempt to ensure I had tried everything I could with the standard setup before remortgaging to buy a 4 corner BBK...I decided to replace the brake hoses and fluid.

So after Goodridge S/S braided hoses all round and new fluid....it has transformed my car....so much so that I don't even think about the brakes when driving...so their performance cannot be lacking as before....I don't doubt the BBKs look and perform better...but.... for not very much I have brought the feel and performance of the 27 year old braking system into the present....at least from my perspective

[sIGPIC][/sIGPIC] "Exaggeration is the enemy of credibility"

This is a test between stock, upgraded and Stoptech BBK brakes on a 350Z and makes for interesting reading.

https://www.zeckhausen.com/catalog/index.php?cPath=6446_6565

The important thing to remember is that the larger pads and discs that come with multi-piston calipers provide a greater

swept area which means a greater area over which heat is generated. Because the total heat for a given stopping force

is always the same, greater swept area means better heat dissipation and less brake fade.

So, while a one-time emergency stop will not show much difference between a stock setup and a 6-piston BBK, the

multi-piston caliper BBK design will be more resistant to fade over several hard stops in quick succession.

Replacing the stock rubber lines with stainless lines is always worthwhile as over many years the rubber lines will start to

ballon under pressure and reduce the brake feel.

The BMC brace is worthwhile. If you don't have one fitted then get someone to stamp on the brake pedal whilst you

observe the BMC - you will see it move a surprising amount as the fire wall flexes and in doing so reducing brake feel.

When comparing my zed with fully refurbished stock calipers to my 250bhp Focus st, yes, I agree that the more modern st has the better brakes.

Don't get me wrong, I think that my zed pulls up very well considering that it is probably twice the weight, which I think is a major consideration when comparing with the more modern vehicles.

Isn’t a full spec ST in excess of 1400kg?

The ST weights about the same as a 2+2 NA, while the RS weighs about the same as a 2+2 TT

That braking difference will be down to feel. The 300zx needs more foot pressure and displacement for the same braking effort, as modern cars tend to be over-assisted these days.

Actual single stop braking distance is about the same, according to Motortrend tests :

2015 Fosus ST - 108 ft

1990 Nissan 300zx TT - 109 ft

^^ and that small difference will be due to the 15 years of tyre development, not braking technology. (although modern ABS modulation is an improvements over the Z's)

I dare say, the 300zx with good condition brakes and suspension, with the same tyres as the Focus will likely have a shorter stopping distance !

Track days are good fun. That is what its all about for me. It can be a little daunting to start with. Im still not 100% confident on Donington which is a very fast flowing track.

This week will help me. Im not very fast in real world terms so I have to tuck over to the right to let the really fast stuff by.

The cheaper evenig sessions finish at the end of August so I may not get back there this year?

I will post up if I am going somewhere else. Blyton Park maybe??

Make the most of it for both of us Pete because il be retiring when I’m dead like most people my age. Well be pushing trolleys round B&Q as reactivated corpses paying off our mortgages and health care bills.
