Lol yeah I know. Just wanna know what to ask for in the shops instead of getting the wrong thing

It holds the glass onto the housing!

Haha sorry! I’ve still not worked that out either! It’s the same stuff as used in the headlamps and I’m yet to find anything like it available, I’d be interested if someone has an answer.

Out of curiosity, why did you remove the glass lens from the housing? Access from behind is a lot easier for cleaning.

Realised that after. This is from the old broken "let's have a look" one, not the ones I have on the car now which need cleaning..

I would prefer to take them out though. Those plastic surrounds are quite brittle....and if I do it from behind I might break something :innocent:

I think it is called Grey Butyl Rubber, I bought some a little while back when I refurbished my headlights.

I'll see if I can dig out where I purchased it from.

I don't think it's butynol as that never sets. The lights I looked at the sealant was all hard.

Just ran that through eBay and found the rolls like they use for plastic inner door lining. Maybe it's that, but with bulb heat and age making it set hard .....?

The rubber has the characteristic of becoming very soft when warmed so as to be very malleable, around 80 deg's.

Once cooled, it becomes very firm again.

If you're careful, you can re-seat them with what came out. You don't need to remove the glass though to get anything out. You can either pressure wash the inside of the glass with the reflector removed and leave to dry or get a vacuum cleaner. You can clean the glass with the reflector removed.

To remove and re-seat, put the units in a cold oven and switch it on to about 80 degrees c. This allows the glass to heat up slowly, the glass will then separate. To rebond, do the reverse!

I've separated mine prior, but that was because I painted the inside plastics black.
