Ok when the heck did the prices on Supra`s accelerate so fast and far above zeds?? really surprised to see some actually changing hands upwards of £18k not just for sale actually selling??? one on now at £25k !! I get it they always seemed to sell for more, and not taking anything from them, great car, and very easily tuned, but still the early one`s are like 25 years old now, thoughts??

Yeah they’re starting to get to that stupid price point. Where shelling out that much money for a 25yr old car that’s GOING to be an endless money pit... and for the most part, the people that want these cars don’t have that much money! (Not all, but most).

For comparison, you could pick up a well specd 2013 BMW 6 series with relatively low mileage for the same money.

I keep thinking this 90s jap bug will fizzle out at some point and prices will stagnate or crash again... but doesn’t look to be happening anytime soon.

I’m curious if anyone here would happily pay £20k for their zed?

Interesting question, so come on guys, if you did not have or ever had a zed and today was looking to buy one, would you pay £20K?

Jeff

I have always always liked the Supra () and did seriously consider a manual UK spec some years ago, but they were already at very strong prices then.

Would I pay 20k for my Z now? That’s a hard one as I (we, on here) are obviously biased. I think that I would knowing the serious offers that others have had on their cars recently.

Simple answer....... 2JZ.

Supras have always commanded more money than a Z.

I think also think supras are considered by most as a more cool kind of car than a Z.

I think its also fair to say that in this country at least the Z owner is of the more senior type than youngsters and this makes them less cool to own.

I would choose a Z over a supra any day but thats not to say i wouldnt own a supra.

The same massive price hike can be seen on the RX7 FD, i have 2 of them, have a look at the asking price for those nowadays!.

These jdm cars are getting fewer as the years go by and its obvious that nice tidy original examples of any marque will only go up in value. [emoji41]

Nope - and the Supra is not worth that either!

Funny things, trends in the perceived values of modern classic cars at the moment...

I have something to say............ It's better to burn out than to fade away..... :tt2:

If you ask me I think the rise in Supra, Skyline and RX7 prices are all to do with Fast and the Furious 1 and 2. The youngsters that loved those movies when they came out are now adults and those cars are/were now within their reach hence the demand going up followed by the price.

Supra's are reliable and have a brilliant engine- 2 of the most important parts of buying/owning a performance car.

I've owned the 4 door JZS161 Aristo that was the first car to use a 2JZ and later VVTi, which the 161's had ( both were probably the best all round cars I've owned).

I think aesthetically that the 300zx is the better car.

I also think that the VG is MASSIVELY underrated and is a great engine that with the right tuning and engine management CAN be reliable with power- many have been put together and pushed for power with no thought and then people wonder why they end up knocking their tits off.

However for simplicity and power potential the 2jz edges it, also with it being a straight 6- for me personally- BPU gets you 400bhp...

Toyota got it right in the 90's with their performance cars, build quality is good, engineering was fantastic which ensured reliability and above all they kept it simple- it meant that FandF picked them up and tuning part availability is unrivalled (By zed standards at least), the Zeds on the other hand have questionable reliability, sometimes over-complicated engineering and limited options when it comes to tuning (compared to cars like the Supra).

Having said that considering the prices- I'd take a zed every time, they're a choice car, you're not buying it because everyone else has one or they're popular in tuning scenes, you're buying one because it was the pinnacle of Nissan engineering at that time and it produced one of the best looking Japanese cars of all time- Supra's are cool but if you knew nothing about either and was told to pick one side-by-side I'd bet my house anyone with half an ounce of sight would choose a Fairlady.

I'd not feel ripped off if I bought my car for £10'000. £20'000 I would, as you said, for that money you want a turn key and drive car like a stock ish R35 GTR.

Capris are totally not worth their asking price either. Stupid money for a very hard to keep relatively low performance car.

I like the early Supra's and I think they are more on the price range of the z32 300zx.

Now this I like....

I had two Mk3 Supras before I bought a Zed and loved them both - they seem to be enjoying a little price rise now as they become much more rare. Especially in that condition:cool:

I think the Supra's appeal is because they came from the factory looking aggressive and purposeful, without having to start modifying it.

Deep front, bonnet vent, rear wing, they all make the car look like it has been designed with performance in mind, to appeal to the people that like powerful cars.

By comparison, although smooth and timeless, the 300 does not look aggressive or purposeful in the same way.

Which is why the old school cars like Capri, Cosworth, Mexico's, etc still appeal with big money, because there were factory examples of the competition cars available.

Nissan never really capitalised on their sporting achievements by releasing factory spec replicas etc, apart from a couple of the original Z's i believe.

They just focussed on making them superior through understatement, with quietly exciting performance.

That is until the GTR really took off, when the road going performance "look" started to make them take notice.

If you add up what some of us paid out for on our zeds over time it adds up to well over £20k......

I think the UK 300 is a much nicer car to look at than a UK supra, I wouldn’t want a UK Supra. However an aerotop Supra turbo is a car I would consider but I wouldn’t pay more for it than a mint UK Zed (so I guess I’ll never own one). I would pay £20k for a mint UK manual OEM+ Zed (in white if anyone’s got one?) so I can see how a Supra can fetch that kind of money.

I wouldn't buy a Supra, so probably not the best to answer this but I would give the asking price of anything if it was something I really wanted.

Never been a fan of the MK4 Supra but that's solely down to the way it looks rather than its dynamics. The dash on them is an example of when bland meets messy. It's ugly, the switchgear looks like it was just thrown there from the parts bin with no concern for aesthetics. The front end is totally non-descript. From a rear end view it looks fairly impressive but apart from that it's nothing more than a jelly bean. I have driven one and didn't think it any better than the Z.

Whilst I don't doubt that the 2JZ and its drive train are fantastically well engineered I think they're over priced but that's because I have never had an inclination to buy one.

......now a MK3 Supra on the other hand or an early CelicaSupra I'd take over a MK4 any day. Stuff a 2JZ in that and you have the best of both worlds.

Interesting that the UK GT3000 or J-spec GTO has not been mentioned..looks a million dollars but ive owned a none turbo and a twin turbo and both cars are bland to drive:(

They're strange looking cars. Not a massive fan of them but they are eye catching.

And not forgetting they sold under the Dodge badge in the good old US called the Dodge Stealth..

I wouldn't buy a Supra, so probably not the best to answer this but I would give the asking price of anything if it was something I really wanted.

Yup - I concur.....

…..Except for the brief time I thought about replacing my Mk3 with Mk4 - and still I decided on a 300zx....
