So the powers that be in their infinite wisdom deemed it is now legal for some approved instructors to take novice young drivers on some of Britain`s busiest motorways....... oh my days, what is wrong with these people ??

I have always thought a newly passed driver who can already take to the motorway the same day as passing their test with little or no experience of driving in fast moving traffic a mistake, and considered a period of non motorway driving allowance of say 6 months after passing a better idea, but now its seems some one who has not even learnt to drive in town yet can get on that super highway !!

Can see it now, fast moving traffic brought to chaos as learner driver crawls along in lane one, not giving to merging traffic and panicking when faced with moving between large vehicles and negotiating junctions at the same time.

How many accidents will be caused a mile further back with no blame then for what caused it... bad enough with some of the once a year on a motorway drivers who have no concept of how it all works!

Who else things this is a recipe for disaster ??

Tbh I always thought it nonsensical that you get no experience on a motorway as a learner. Realistically though what’s the difference between a two lane motorway like the M27 and an A road dual carriageway. I know one of the papers were concerned that the L boxes might fall off at motorway speeds? What like the 70mph they can do on a dual carriageway:lol: if they encorperate it into the test it will require an hour and a half round trip out the county for the kids round here.

To be totally honest the procedure is no longer fit for purpose and needs major reconstruction. They shouldn’t be allowed on a public road until they have shown control in a controlled environment including skid pans etc and passed the theory test, then the practical should a corse where you pass milestones like planning and carrying out a journey. Then people should be party retested for health etc. Maybe then we’d habe less people crash in thier first year and less pathetic speed restrictions.

What utter nonsense. In one breath you say its rediculous to allow L drivers on motorways but in the next you say its wrong to allow a new full licence holder on a motorway.

The instructor is responsible enough to know when a driver is ready for motorway experience and experience gained whilst in the presence of a the instructor is surely better and safer than when on their own.

And lets be honest here its usually the more senior members of the driving community that cause the most problems anyway.

At least taking an L driver on a motorwat may lead to them not driving at 55mph in lane 2 or 3 which really boils my piss.

I think it's a great idea personally.

I remember taking the ferry to Zeebugge having never driven abroad late 70s early 80s.

Then having my first encounter with the German autobahn's.

Having no experience driving on the opposite side of the road, then the autobahn's as well!

And all in a Right hand drive car!

About time to get L drivers on the M ways

Learners need motorway experience how else will they learn than going on the motorway. I agree that the whole test needs updating. Change it more like the Finnish test so it takes two years and you have various stages and levels to pass before getting your full license, you could also make it more like the bike license and limit the engine size for certain ages. Learners on motorways dont worry me, but 17 year olds in VXR corsa/astras who bought the car new on finance and then scream around driving dangerously scare me... With great power comes great responsibility....

Also why not introduce a re-test element. Every 10 years when you have to up date your photo, why not re-sit a test. It would keep standards high and drivers up to date with the latest highway code changes. Not to mention how to deal with the ever increasing traffic. People who passed their test in the 50's or 60's for example would find it very very different now. Driving is a privilege, not a right. too many people forget that I think...

I passed my test in Dover in an army 4 toner at sixteen years old.

My early cars where Morris minor, Austin A35 & ZB Magnet! Hardly speed machines.

But those early years driving stood me in good stead later.

Yes the test maybe different now with the introduction of a written test but passing a written test doesn't make a better driver!

Does it?

Also isn't it the younger drivers who has the most accidents?

Yes I have seen the aged driver on the road thinking my god why are they still on the road!

I'm probably getting near that stage where the younger drivers are thinking the same about me!

I think it makes sense. Driving on motorways is super simple and yet most people manage to **** it up. We have one major Ring road around Dublin and it's congested due to at least one crash almost every day!

I am pretty sure that any driving instructor taking a learner driver onto a motorway will only take someone that is competent and ready, and will not be taking a complete novice into that situation, even though it has to be a dual control vehicle.

As others have mentioned, there is not a lot of difference to driving on dual carriageways, which is already part of the syllabus.

Seems like a complete over reaction from you there Jeff, or are you learning to write click-bait headlines? :)

At least when he is giving help & advice it's not fake news!

I think its ridiculous that learners don't go on the motorway. Anything to stop the amount of dead heads staying in the middle lane all the time and i'm all for it.

They should do the same for HGV drivers that over take each other doing the same speed too.

Ive just covered almost a 1000 miles this week on various bikes around the country and i think a learner driver with an instructor on our motorways is the very least of the country's problems regarding being safe out there...Dont know where to start but there does seem to be a massive infestation of young women in hatchbacks texting or using the phone while driving as a starter:censored:

Good point Bri…..

Young girls are every bit as bad as (reputation would suggest) young guys are nowadays....

There are a couple of teenage girls who live just down the road from me - and when they drive into the service road (where I often wash my cars), they fly around the corner so quickly, that if a child was playing or crossing, they would have no time to stop! I challenged one of them about it the other day - when she nearly ran me over - and she said "I was only doing 30!!" "I know," I replied, "but given the width of the road and the lack of visibility, I always turn in here at under 10mph."...

More concerned with what [shite] is playing on the stereo - or texting/calling their mates, I fear!!

I have something to say............ It's better to burn out than to fade away..... :tt2:

Yes Richard..could,nt of described the typical scene better myself. The pupating little cretins drive these small cars like go-carts, which i blame the TV advertising for as they always highlight these small hatchbacks shooting around city's like pinball machines...

Yup - both have Corsas…..

….And then I may be considered the antichrist for daring to suggest that I might have driven at 155mph, at 7am one Sunday morning, on a clear, dry, empty motorway; in a proper high performance car, built for such speeds....[allegedly - this is not in any way an admission, as it may never have happened. In the UK anyway..]

Puts the whole argument into perspective...
