Occasionally my Z32 TT turns over really quickly and will not start. I had to get it out of the way yesterday so as I was on my own and my drive is on a slight incline, out of desperation I turned it over in gear to one it out of the way. Having moved it forward a couple of feet on the starter motor in first gear, I tried it again and it started first time!! When it won't start the engine turns over very quickly compared to normal. I'm not a mechanic but I am an engineer. The only thing I can think of is less resistance when its turning over IE. no compression. Can a valve get stuck open or if there in no fuel being injected into the cylinders, does this make it easier for the engine to turn over?? Has anyone else had this issue before??

Any advice would be much appreciated.

Thanks in advance.

Sounds like flooding issue, a common problem can be a bad connection to the temperature sensor, this can cause over fuelling as the signal is outside of the normal range and its safer to over fuel rather than run weak, check and clean the connection. It is situated at the engine front on the water pipe along side the single connection dash board temp gauge sensor, should be a yellow plug, whilst your there worth checking the cam sensor connection too.

Thank Jeff I will have a look and post my findings just incase anyone else has the same problems.

Hi Jeff

Update: I have checked the temp sensor and wiring. All ok. Still having trouble. i think it might be a fuel/mapping issue. My engine has been rebuilt by Jimmer (Top bloke) with forged pistons and bigger injectors and hybrid turbos. It was road mapped by turbonoz and since then it seems to run rich and smells of fuel. The carbon canister has been deleted. I will check the resistance value of the coolant temp sensor (perhaps out of range) and see if thats an issue.

Just going back to your original post and quote " Occasionally my Z32 TT turns over really quickly and will not start " so on days its ok the mapping is correct? that said not a fan of anything done by that creep Noz and defo would get the mapping redone.

If it is intermittent it will be something that can fix it self sometimes and connections to sensors or sensors themselves are where I would be concentrating your attention to, did you do an ecu diagnostic?

Hi Jeff

Thanks for the advice. My car is away at the body shop having some spray work done so I can't do anything for a week or two. Its off to Jimmer to have a new flywheel and clutch fitted so I will ask him to have a look. Im going to get it re-mapped as I have been advised that Noz is not the best!! Jimmer has recommended a company to me so I will get it booked in. I will keep you posted and anyone else who's interested just incase its useful to anyone in the future who has the same problem :)

UPDATE: Having got my carsick from the body shop and driven from Wiltshire to Cardiff & back my car starter stinking of fuel through the air vents. This got me thinking if it could be related to y starting issues. I checked the ECU for fault codes and got code 55, all clear. I checked my fuel lines for leaks and couldn't see anything obvious. However, when I pulled the vacuum lines off of the fuel pressure regulator it stank of fuel. I think maybe the diaphragm has split and its leaking through into the vacuum system. This could be linked with my starting issue. I going to change the fuel pressure regulator and the other fuel component jobby (which looks like it has a diaphragm in it as well) and see if that cures my problem. Is this a Nissan main dealer part of can I then from somewhere else Z1 motorsports maybe??

Make sure you tighten up ALL the hose clamps. They loosen over time. You're better off replacing them with the later style spring clamps.

You can get the fuel damper and fuel pressure regulator from UK sources. Mike Feeney (MJP Eastern Auto), our club trader, will be able to get these for you, or your local Nissan dealership depending on who serves you (especially armed with part numbers), or you can get them from here:

If these components, that are currently installed on your car, aren’t finished in the silver as pictured above, you should replace them anyway as it would suggest that they were installed from new. This is s service item that should be replaced every 10 years.

The rational behind replacing the FPR and damper as service items is explained here:

Thanks for the info and advice. My fuel pressure regulator is the original that came with the car.....its black. Given my car is a 1989 model year it's nearly 30 years old!! I have ordered a new pressure regulator and the other one (can't remember what its called) from Z1 MotorSports this morning. I will also tighten up the jubilee clips on the fuel line. Hopefully this will solve the issue as I could really do without my Zed catching fire!!

Ok does that involve a plenum pull and are the fuel pipes Nissan supplied or universal?

What do the later ones look like Si?

If you decide to also replace the rubber fuel lines, then the most cost effective way is with a single length (2.20m)

of Nissan hose suitable for Z32 fuel injection and resistanct to damage from ethanol in petrol cut to the required lengths.

Ordered new fuel lines cut to fit from Z1 Motorsports. My weekend activity will be changing the fuel pressure regulator, the fuel damper and the fuel lines. Hopefully this will sort out my issue. Cheers for the advice I will post my findings when Ive completed the work.

Update: Problem Solved. I ordered a fuel damper and a pressure regulator. I also ordered new pre cut fuel lines from Z1 Motorsports as per advice. Having removed the plenum balance tube to get access I found that the plenum had fuel laying in it and it stank. I removed the fuel damper/regulator & various hoses (there wasn't any pressure in the fuel line because it had all leaked through the fuel damper into the vacuum line and eventually ended up sat in the plenum). I replaced all of the parts & tested for fuel leaks. All OK. I reckon the reason why my car was hard to start was lack of fuel pressure due to it firing straight through the diaphragm of the fuel damper and into the plenum, hence the need to keep turning it over until it eventually started. I took it for a test drive and the smell of fuel had gone. Before I could smell the fuel coming through the air vents in the dash and it was so bad it made my eyes water!! I turned it off several times and restarted with no problems. Fingers crossed that thats the end of it :)

All I've got to do now is stop my fan belt from squealing when I start it up. Its bloody annoying. Ive put a new vicious fan clutch on it and its tensioned correctly. Bloody annoying!!
