Due to new MOT rules in Northern Ireland my MPH clock will be an mot failure as they now need to show both MPH and KPH. So I need a MPH/KPH speedo cover plate and over the last few months I cant find any for sale. Does any member know where these can be found or do you have any?

Even for old cars? That's ludicrous.

Yes I was pulled on it on my last MOT (July 2017) but he let it go saying it would need to be changed for my next MOT. Must be because we have a land border with the south of Ireland which is in KPH.

Gary. NI mot regs state that mph and kmh may be displayed simultaneously or separately via the operation of a switch so you could fit a switch to operate the head as both mph and kph.

Again it states if the tester is unsure of how to switch between the two modes he MUST pass and advise.

MPH must be the default displayed in this situation.

Go on NI direct mate its all written there.

Dont be fooled by testers who are not doing their job correctly. Know the facts and go to the test armed with them.

Thanks Richie but I want to keep it oem as much as possible the UK clock face looks good.

I was thinking of you just fitting them for MOT once a year?? They're fitted to a set of clocks, just match up the mileage to correspond to your original

I would leave the clocks untouched and fit a switch which can be removed without damage and say that it switches from MPH to KMH.

They cant test the function so must pass it.

Job done.

Does your Z have a SVA (single vehicle application) or IVA (individual vehicle application) cert?

Some imports get these on arrival.

Will check if the SVA is on the V5 Chris and what if you had a sat nav on your screen that should kph would that work?

If you have sva cert then the rules dont apply to you so mph only is fine.

Satnav is not acceptable as a speedo

Look what I found buried in my garage! I thought I bought a set of 300zx clocks a few years ago but when I searched weeks ago the only clocks I found were for an Audi so I gave up. Then today while tiding up the garage I found the 300zx clocks and they have the MPH/Km/h. Happy days  Now just need to fit the new face.

The needle of my old clocks removed very easy but the needle on my Z has more resistance and I dont want to break it. Is there a procedure for taking the speedo needle off?
A fork works very well. Just put something between the fork and the dial face to prevent damage.

So my jap clocks have a speed converter attached to them to make it read MPH but now have a MPH/KPH face so do I need to remove the speed converter? It feels like I am doing 60 mph and the clock is reading 40 mph:sad:

If you have fitted the dial face that you posted a picture of in this post then you do need to remove your converter, the standard JDM KPH dial reads to 180Kph so needs the converter whereas your replacement only goes to 110 in MPH roughly 180KPH, I had the same issue with the speedo on my GTO

Hope that helps

Thanks Marc I have already disconnected the speed converter and now the speedo wont work...... Back to the drawing board.

If I remember correctly when the converter is initially fitted one of the tracks on the flexible circuit on the back of the gauge unit has to be broken so the signal can go through the converter, that connection needs to be remade when the converter is removed, if the converter has a manufacturers name on it you could obtain the original wiring diagram for installation and see which track or tracks were interrupted.

Will check it out tomorrow mate :thumbup1:
