Sorry for the post, my clutch started to give yesterday at only standard power slipping as soon as it came onto boost so I'm looking to replace with one that will happily cope with 400bhp. I know Exedy's are fine for medium powered NA engines, but when it comes to skylines etc. I remember they were frowned upon in favour of more exclusive brands...

so no BS, who has a clutch which is still perfectly streetable and comfortable performing up to 400bhp?

Rather annoyingly it's just one of a list of issues right now, whenever i let off the throttle I get a clunk from the rear diff and you can feel it travels right back to the engine as it jerks it down, this is particularly obvious at very slow speeds the car is ON OFF ON OFF ON OFF no matter how much you feather the throttle.

I get a shudder at the rear up to about 50, either it's the central prop bearing, some suspension component has worked loose or something going on in the diff. Wheels have been balanced so rules that out.

Now allegedly (and confirmed by a garage, not just the owner) the diff was rebuilt along with the gearbox, and the central bushing was done - perhaps it has and things are just particularly 'tight' but it feels bloody awful in honesty. One would assume the clutch would be done at the same time, but this one certainly can't handle overtaking so need something better.

I have the RPS Max Street clutch and RPS segmented flywheel. Both now supplied and manufactured by Speciality-Z in the US.

Very progressive (no on/off). The clutch is very tough and I've not seen complaints (TT.net) with performance failing to meet

specs published by Speciality-Z. There are several members in the Club who are also happily running this setup .

Have you checked the driveshaft's UJ's ?

She's so fine, there's no tellin' where the money went - Simply irresistible.

Just had the same combo as Joel and Andrew fitted yesterday by Lord ShimSham of Jimmerville.

Very smooth and only a slightly more aggressive bite over stock. I have noticed the car is more responsive too, it feels really nice, I'm certainly a happy camper.

....avoid paddle clutches and twin plate clutches unless you're going to be running very high HP or as a dedicated track car.

Wow three recommendations in a row, you guys on commission or something?

Price is a little steep after shipping, but I could stomach it. What's this about the 350z clutch fork, surely the 300 one is fine?

I'm not sold on the flywheel at the moment, I've never liked the thought of running a lightened flywheel and one with detachable parts seems a little unnecessary.. has anyone run JUST the clutch on the stock fly?

I have a Competition Clutch one, good for circa 500lbft with the stock Clutch. It’s not light but it’s been very reliable. Available in the UK at reasonable cost.

There are absolutely no downsides to running the SZ segmented clutch, only positives. Firstly, the rotational mass is less giving you greater response....you know this. The SZ flywheel is not lightened to excess and has no negative affect on drivability. Lastly, the reason they're segmented is to act as a heat shield to dissipate prevent warping under extreme loads. The two parts really do go hand in hand.

You've heard of the best available above^^

Just so you know there are cheaper options, especially for a tame build such as 400hp. May feel 80% as good for 20% the price that sort of thing.

I'm a uni student so my budget is tight, so I have a xtd clutch and flywheel which will hold the power I put though it and cost about £200 with new throwout and pilot bearings :)

I have a stage 2 Comp clutch too...can be very heavy but very solid.

I got an XTD clutch and it slipped immediately and was a waste of money. I have a competition 6 puck and it's great. Those and stock are my experience. I'm sure Si and Joely are right about RPS.

Your problems could be propshaft out of true and/or balance.

Interesting. I haven't heard any bad rep from them before and they've performed well for everyone I've talked to. I'm on the 6 puck because I want to future proof the clutch for future power, and it doesn't feel bad, it's not on off like other clutches though I'm sure the RPS would fell much nicer, but that's far out of my budget.
I have the RPS Street Max also, great clutch. Although for the power levels you are looking at you should be good with the cheaper RPS Sport Street clutch - https://specialtyz.com/shop/300zx/clutch-flywheel/sz-sport-street-for-vg30dett-and-vq35s.html

Given the cost of shipping and installing a new clutch I would have thought going straight for the Max in the first instance would be a better

choice. Especially now that the MK2 version of the Max is now lighter in pedal pressure that my MK1 type and more stock like in feel.

SZ's own description of the Street "This should be viewed as a OE replacement in most cases and will not hold much power" would put me

off using it.

Just giving options, since he said the price was steep. 200 lbs more clamping force than stock and has been the go to choice for cars with bolt on mods (~400hp) for as long as I can remember.
