I went to visit my Nan today and noticed she had a copy of MP sitting on the coffee table.

Turns out my Gramps found it while clearing out my old bedroom, been 18 years since I last stayed there. Thank god he didn't find any of my other "reading" material.

Anyway I've attached pictures of the article. Enjoy!!!

If the owner of the car is on here I'd be happy to send you the mag.

Edit (rotated the photos but the original ones are still there and I can't seem to delete them)

What an awful magazine! So, did he put a supra box in his 300?

I reckon a lot of TT zeds could do 180mph, I never will sadly, not with my new NA back end. I think I'm now limited to 150ish.

I don't really like Vauxhauls, but even putting that aside, I'm not sure 250hp could push any car through that much air. I am prepared to be wrong but I think physics says no to that one.

Good find Alic :thumbup1:

I didn't find it lol!

Theoretically all manual TT zeds should do over 180mph with a delimiter, calculated by gearing, rev limit and tyre size. I don't know if I would have the balls to do it though.

With an na rear end you lose around 15mph off that. You can use a top speed calculator to work it out exactly.

In my time on this forum I want to see this tested though :D

Using calculations you get around 187mph, some have claimed they've done 190 but that's most likely pub talk.

Theoretical calculations based on engine rpm gear ratios and wheel sizes are just that! Doing it is another story. I would bet most run of the mill Zeds would not see 180mph with "no problem"

Very true, and with these cars approaching 30 years old its almost dangerous to attempt it with possible worn out bushings etc. Would be interesting to see what one would do though.

A friend of mine in the US acheived 200mph in his Z32. Heavily modified though. I was fortunate enough to drive it, however not at those speeds.

This isn't it, but here's another one. I love the fact that there's no shitty body modifications. Z32 road cars perform just right at all levels of bhp without the need to fit, big ugly bodykits and stupid cutouts.

PS, Max Power was shite! A true chav mag if ever there was one. It's a shame as the really really early issues were rather good, very much a grass-roots car customisation magazine. There was another which ceased publication which was very much like the really early days of Max Poop, but I forget what it was called.

Max Poop, along with Fast Car and a few others from the time represented everything that was wrong with modern society. The tabloid publications of the motoring world if you please.

Redline magazine was good Si.

I honestly don't think I have lost "only" 15mph Alic. I have been into the top end of 5th gear and was doing about 140ish. My car has done over 160mph, when it had the TT Diff, but you're really covering ground at that speed, the last runway I was on (Chivenor) I had just enough room for 150mph or so.

I know it was only 20mph away from 180, but it's a BIG 20mph at that end of the speedo.

I'll get a picture, let's see how much room it took to reach 150mph...

I read somehwhere that at + 170mph the hp needed to increase speed by just a few mph was staggering. Theres alot more to driving fast than just the power.....

So, it took me about 1200m to reach 150mph, at which point you're doing 70m/s! I remember using my K sports and taking the bottom corner quite fast a couple of times.

I'd have needed some serious room to go faster.

Si, are you thinking of Revs?

No, it wasn't mainstream. Revs was as bad as Lax Power.

It was a little like Practical Classics, but had engine and tuning advise. Sad when that ended print.

Performance car?

No. It was more aimed at the retro market. It's not something that's printed now, it probably went out of print around 10 years ago.

I reckon I agree mate! The Calibra might be pretty slippery, but I seriously doubt that 250bhp would be sufficient either.....

.....Very true Chris. We might all have hit 155 - and felt the car had a lot more to give - and whilst it probably does, wind resistance at those speeds will prove the limiting factor.....

......For sure! I reckon any car would need a minimum of 380bhp, maybe closer to 400bhp to top a true 180mph. IIRC the 3.0sc 400bhp F-Type Jag can manage around 175mph - which puts the limits aerodynamics impose on a car at high speed, into perspective.

I have something to say............ It's better to burn out than to fade away..... :tt2:

Mmm... BMW 5.0 litre V10 M5 and M6 both good for 200 MPH straight out of the dealership with limiter removed, plenty of youtube videos to proof with gps etc. yet Sierra Cosworths were making over 180 mph from a 2 litre Cortina engine....albeit with massive mods, remember in the day some Escort RS turbo`s making 160 mph from a 1.6 8 valve cvh engine ! just nuts at that time, all of the tuning companies competing to unlock the new turbo power given to us by Ford, Seven Valley Motorsport ...... Turbo Technics .......... Sue Collins Performance ....... Graham Goode Racing and some I cannot remember..... was great times to have a Ford turbo car

Exactly what I was referring to Jeff! M5 and M6 with rev limiter removed have easily topped 200mph - just as some AMG Mercs and RS Audis will also.

And yes, I have no doubt as to the capabilities of old-school fast Fords - but as you say, they would certainly have been heavily modified; and we all know that some Cossies were tuned to 400bhp-plus in the day!!

Despite all the Cossie hype, it wasn't until the Sapphire arrived, that the Sierra (in stock form) could actually hit 150mph; since the rear spoiler seriously inhibited aerodynamics. The Escort Cossie - again in stock form - struggled to hit 140mph for the same reason. That rear wing acted held the car back a hell of a lot - albeit it kept the rear end securely glued to the road...!

As some of you know, I pretty much my zee out at bruntingthorpe at 181mph through the speed trap at the 1.65 mile mark. It was still pulling And with a bit more space i should have breached the 190 mark, but I don’t think it would have done much more. I seem to remember I was at about 6800rpm at that speed on 255/35 and 295/30/18’s at 570hp at the crank.

Gotta day though, she was as stable as a stable thing at those speeds

Wish I had the balls to max out mine, I saw 170 on the clock with my last one (but the clock reading cannot be trusted, probably 150 real world), but was alongside a db9 and he seemed happy he was doing near 170. Nowadays I don't have the balls or mechanical trust to do over 100. I think for a true 180mph you would need significant weight reduction and a true 400bhp+.

Did some pulls on the autobahn when I went to Germany this summer and I managed to get it to a indicated 220-230kph which I believe my GPS showed as just over 200 maybe 205kph.

I say managed because it wasn't easy and needed a lot of road...

Warm summer weather, me and a buddy and a trunk full of baggage and stock boost levels...

Funny how much the temperature has to say when it comes to making power, I remember it had a lot more poke once we arrived back in a cold and rainy Oslo
