Picked up an automatic box from Ted this weekend,.

He cut this cable for the connector,.

It goes into the auto box,.

Can this be replaced?IMG_3063.jpg

You might be able to take out the selector and replace it with your one? Ive never tried.

Not supposing any one knows what the cable connector/plug/socket is under the cover?

Just before I go ahead & dismantle it!

I was just wondering if the cable (which has about 10 small wires in it) disappears into the casing of the gearbox or is it a connector?

Swap over the selector and loom from you old box, easy as that.

Jeff

Thanks for that Alic

Thanks Jeff for confirmation.

Sorry guys of the manual clan!

Unfortunately I adore the auto alternative.

Fitting used auto boxes is just a waste of time imo. If you really do like the auto and intend on keeping the car i think its worth paying the extra and having the transmission fully reconditioned. While its out. Then fitting a larger fluid cooler upfront with new lines going to the transmission. Check and make sure the wiring speed sensor and ECU are sound and you will be good to go.

LOL - it's not a bad auto, considering the age of these cars - but as another old git, I have to concur.... I also like the auto!!

....But Chris, you do have point. Fitting a 2nd hand auto 'box is always a gamble; as the replacement could just as easily fail in a short space of time. I went down the full rebuild route with my old red Zed; cost me £1200-ish all in IIRC, but with the 24 month warranty I got, it was worth the cost.

I have something to say............ It's better to burn out than to fade away..... :tt2:

Yeah I've been through 3 well within 24 months

Exactly my point. Having done that now 3 times would you agree a recon at around £1200 is cost effective? People need to understand these cars cost money to maintain. People get fed up with them because "it"s had 3 boxes in 2 years" do the job right and do it once..... its not the car at fault is often the owner trying to cut corners and save money.

I couldn't say because I didn't really want an auto box. Cost effective? Probably not as I would have to go through 8-10 to match the price of a recon. But that's not the point, you don't want to keep breaking down, you want it to work and to know it will work and not leave you stranded and if it did you would have a new reconditioned box free. Overall for the standard person I would say don't buy any old auto box and expect it to work forever, buy a looked after low mileage one, that has proof of running perfectly, and hasn't been sitting around in a barn for 5 years, you are taking a gamble.

I cant believe I just said that, I just offered an autobox to someone in another thread

You are right of course! This being my third,

Next year if this fails then I will have a go at a recon job.

I just do not understand why some of you say manual is the way to go!

I do not think electric/hybrids have manuals do they?

Formula one cars do they have manual?

Anyway for me it's auto auto auto :)

But how could you justify the cost of replacing 8 to 10 used boxes against 1 recon box and 1 swap? If you had to pay labour 8 to 10 times to do the job plus the cost of the boxes plus ATF etc your WELL over the cost of a recon i bet. Compared to cost if modern auto boxes a Z32 is cheap as chips i assure you.

Err well it was including labour as a mixture of doing it myself, and perhaps having a friend to help, but with the ATF sure it will be 5-8 times?

Money is not the reason you would go for a recon-ed box, its reliability and piece of mind to ensure you can leave it in there and forget about it knowing it will probably work forever.

Electric cars don't need gearboxes, so not an auto. F1 cars have purpose built race gearboxes which are inherently different from the workings of this one.

Automatic gearbox technology from 30 years ago is so undeveloped compared to those of today. The auto gearboxes are often referred to as slushboxes, in that the torque converter steals engine speed so you don't get all of the engine output out (until higher rpms). The same technology of gearbox used in Toyota corollas was used in a $40000 sports car, it wasn't a special gearbox designed for a performance car.

Also they are statistically less reliable than manuals with more complex parts. A lot of the argument for manual is a mixture of things, driving pleasure is only one of them.

Correct me someone if I got anything wrong.

For me Alic that's great in the techno knowledge!

Autos were always more expensive so people chose manual.

The thrill of revving high & changing gear on the red line! It's boy racer territory surely?

Plus you can drive an auto changing gears, can you not?

Its not about changing at the red line at all. Its about having control over the car. You can select the correct gear for the speed and to suit exiting or entering a bend/corner. You can engine brake also which makes a massive difference.

Auto boxes of this era just dont give you control like a manual. It spends alot of time between gears and unless your kicking it down coming out of a bend its always in the wrong gear. Kicking down in a powerful zed in the wrong hands on a bend will usually end up in mess.

The boxes werent designed to be thrashed from 1 to D either. Thats the purpose of the power/hold switch.

If you like the auto stick with it. Its just my advice to get a recon box in there this time and have done with it. Its not that expensive in the grand scheme of things is it really? I just done £1200 on a mattress so a recon auto box is relatively cheap.

I've said it before and I'll say it againhaving driven both of n a TT A manual box makes you realise just how much raw power you have but perversely it also makes you realise how good the auto box is at smoothing out the power delivery

A modern multigeared automatic, like what you will find in high end merc etc, brilliant. The archaic Autobox in a Z32, is a power sucking dullard that ruins the car it’s attached to. I’d take an NA manual over a TT auto. Infact if i had to convert back to auto I’d sell the damn thing!

where can you get an auto box refurbed ?

Are there any places up norf ?

Not sure about up north, Tony; but I used this guy down in Bucks....

He came recommended to be by another member on here at the time - and I was very impressed. Great job, great service and highly knowledgeable. I'd go back to him again, should the 'box in my current Zed give up. Assuming I don't get Jimmer to convert it to manual...
