Had Ksport 8 pots my my subaru and now looking at kits for the 300, seems to be limited choice?

 

Any recommendations or experience/advice welcome. Ksports/D2/Brembo etc?

Rather depends on your budget. I went from R33 GTR Brembos to AP Racing off the shelf fronts and bespoke

AP Racing rears. Pricey but the mutt's nuts.

She's so fine, there's no tellin' where the money went - Simply irresistible.

I've gone with Evo 8 calipers and Evo 10 350mm discs. They fill my wheels nicely and the stopping power has very noticably increased.

350z front set up and rebuilt stock rears. More than adequate and unlike the very similar (arguably the same) skyline version, they are available and fairly priced. Anything bigger than that and you risk upsetting the bias and just locking up faster. It's all well and good having huge front brakes but you need balance and the grip to use the stopping power, healthy stock brakes can lock the front easy enough.

Need to run wheels with a minimum internal diameter of 450mm. They're in the for sale section for the moment:whistling: Won't be around much longer though:thumbup1:

Indeed, I was pretty happy with the stock brakes in good condition for road use. I would of stuck with them if I didn't have further ambitions. Brake fade is as scarey as it is inconvenient :lol: There seems to be a misunderstanding that big brakes equals shorter stopping distances, this isn't necessarily the case or even really the right aim.

Never had any issues with r33 gtr brembos with decent fluid and pads when I had mine, and that was back in the day when I uses to do some silly high speed runs in the Z.

For me its a bit of both, with the wheels im putting on the zed the brakes are going to look lost and also now im used to a big brake kit from the previous car standard 300 brakes just dont cut the mustard.

Didn't upset the front/rear bias either as most of the braking force is on the front axle anyway.

 

Bought new EBC discs and made the spacers to off-set the callipers.

 

The benefits of big discs are a higher rotational speed at the pad face and greater heat sink abilities.

 

No need for anything better on the road I found, and capable of repeated high speed stops, with much less pedal force.

 

Big brakes don't equal shorter stopping distances but do equal repeat performance and more importantly confidence.

Standard brakes are frightening if they are past their best - as most will be now, after years of hauling a 1.5 tonne, 155mph car to a halt!

 

If the stock set up is working 100%, then it's not scary at all. Ask PhilP; I drove his "collectors Zed" before he bought it - 11k miles from new and the brakes worked every bit as good as the then-new SLK350 I had at the time.....:wink:

 

I have refurbed (by Bigg Redd) OEM calipers and Brembo discs and they work fine; however I still like the idea of that 350z front upgrade Steve and Pete mentioned above. And yes, I do see that might sound a bit hypocritical, given what I have just said.....:lol:

There's a different feel to old car brakes and I think that's where the confusion comes about. The other cars at home have very sharp brakes where as the z on standard brakes was more progressive. The actual stopping distance was pretty good, it's just that it wasn't a sharp stop.

I think that's more to do with the condition of the MC and servo than anything else.

Both good points there - modern cars' brakes often have a distinct "instantaneous" feel about them, even if they don't actually shed MPH as quickly as their "feel" suggests. Particularly small hatchbacks.

 

And Si has a good point - the servo and MC on a Zed will, unless they have been replaced for new or refurbed, will most likely be a contributing factor. Again in comparison to the modern hatchback; upon which the brakes are possibly over-servo'd; which does not necessarily equate to better stopping distances, despite the "feel."

I went with K Sports F &R and EBC NDX Blue pads. Very happy with the setup

To be fair, I've never driven a low mileage example but have been in many that have been refurbished and have never been that inspired.

 

Perhaps been unlucky but still think for the minimal cost of a new set of S8 discs over std, the gains are very noticeable and well worth it if you were going to fit new discs anyway.

With the increased diameter you need a simple small plate for each calliper. Made mine out of some 10mm thick steel plate off cut I had lying around and then drilled 4 holes. Very simple, effective and cheap.

 

There are 2 sizes of S8 discs but you need the 345mm. Straight fit and add the calliper brackets.

 

Do not fit with std size wheels though which is probably the reason for the original sized discs. Have 18's on mine and just clear.

 

EBC website has a fitment chart so easy to find by the way.

I agree with all the above, its more that fact that the brakes on the zed are working perfectly however after driving a car with a full Ksport upgrade there is a noticeable difference in stopping ability.
