What the hell is going on with pop music at present?!

I only get normal Radio in the van and I can't abide adverts, so occasionally il listen to Radio1. Yesterday's offering particularly, shockingly shit.

The other week Ed Sherann held 18 of the top 20, 18! Now I don't mind old eddy but that can't be right. Then there's the quality, it's been poor for a while but Katy Perry's latest "banger" (supposedly politically based) is so lack lustre and lyrically devoid its like it was written by a 12 year old. I'm seriously surprised it didn't end "and then we woke up". Even supposed indie artist Lorde's new offering feels like the lyrics and the music were written in two separate hotels then squeezed together in a that will do fashion. All of a sudden they're all from the West Indies, even if they are actually from Texas or Hertfordshire or even Essex.

Rant over :taz:

Smooth radio?

I listen to radio 5 for sport & news.

Can't stand radio 1.

2&4 are better.

haha, you old fart

but what is this Radio1 you speak of? 2&4 are the only ones where my ears can actuallly make anything out!

I listen to 4 most of the time tbf, it's much more suited for the hours and hours I spend driving. It's like earwigging, just paying attention to the bits that are interesting and tuning out on the blah but the noise is there. I often catch the afternoon drama, which can go either way but passes the time.

Listen to radio 2 at work, just for pop master really. Radio 2's second string of presenters is awful. Absolute radio is good but a lot of adverts.

100% agree was having the same talk with some one else last week. its so bad right now

Do you at least have decent variety in stations over there? Every music station in Dublin plays the same pop shite, apart from one classical station and the odd pirate station. :(

Who remembers Radio Luxembourg ? :walkman:

Oh yes at night in bed on a small radio on Medium Wave, ( 208 mw ) remember the signal would increase and fade and sometimes stop all together for minutes at a time, usually listened to via one of those single little earphone things made of the most uncomfortable plastic known to man, but carefully arranged the radio, cable and earphone ( mullet pulled over ) was not visible when Mon or Dad checked in if you were asleep, eyes shut tight but pure teenage bliss in one ear...... oh they were the days.

I remember you working on my old red Zed listening to classic fm, does help you chill out.

BBC Radio 2 gets listened to the most in my cars, however I mostly listen to my own music (large collection of many genres, but 70's rock being the most common). Classic FM is put on in the control room as after a 10 hour shift, you hear the same 18 "new" pop songs so many times you are ready to slit some wrists. Classic FM is actually quite relaxing and some of it (once shazam'd) has leaked into my music collection too!

Radio 1 ended for me the day after Chris Moyles left and that Grimey idiot appeared. I don't pretend to be even close to their demographic, but he was a step too far. I bought a DAB so I can listen to Planet Rock in the morning (and Johnny Vaughan/Radio X on the way home).

ah the grimmy character he reminds me of the old tunes advert '1st class return to dottingham' i don't get how some1 with a monotone voice ends up on national radio, even my son who is in there demographics for him thinks he's a muppet :confused1:

I don't know anyone who likes grimshaw. He's so annoying and I don't feel he has any talent. Apparently the average Radio 1 listener is 35 now up from 32 last year, I dunno who these people are but then do milenials even listen to Radio.

Radio 1 is dire, the only show I listened to more recently was John Peel's 'Sessions' show and that finished over a decade ago. More interesting than modern chart music with it's miserable auto-tune lyricists. I only really listen to Radio 2, Jazz FM, Radio 4. There are a couple of other DAB stations that I listen to like 'Planet Rock' and 'Absolute 80s'.
