Tell you what pees me off with MOT testers, is there inability to all work from the same page, why oh why do they put stupid ass advisories that make no sense, and one`s that spoil a completely unblemished 10 year MOT record.

"Unable to complete check underneath due to under tray covers fitted "

Argh !! the manufacturer fitted them AND the last 9 TESTER realised there was NO need to mention you could not see the SUMP ?????

Then if you go to Halfords for an MOT then what do you expect ??

Rant over

My last MOT marked my car as 504000 miles or some *****cks. Car's not on the road so haven't had a chance to get it taken to an inspection place which it needs to correct the record.

Annoying !!

My hyundai coupe failed on a binding rear brake, too much travel in the handbrake and excessively corroded rear brake pipes. I sorted the binding out and put new discs on, i spent a few hours rubbing the surface rust off the foot of brake pipe to see no pitting at all, gave them a coat of smoothrite to protect, i took the car to another garage and it failed on a front drop link rubber has a slight split in it. No mention of the above, so after rectifying the failed items it failed on something else, literally the next day. I had the same argument about singing off the same sheet.

Its like the bible one persons interpretation of on the day

Oh don't. Last year was silly, I failed about 6 things, 5 of which well. Even after I jumped through some very pedantic and arguably unnecessary hoops he taggged on "exhaust noisey". The car had done less than 3k miles since the previous year and it was the same test place, new tester.

Some are very fair, it has to be said. Others, I swear they work for some cycling lobby.

I envy your MOT system. Our scummy government gave a monopoly to one company, so we don't have the option of switching to a less shitty test center. Waiting lists are usually 2-3 months too, but on the plus side, they won't fail additional defects as part of a retest.

Im all for a rigorous tester, after all safety is paramount, but for god sake at least be consistent :thumbup1:

I think N.I. has the best MOT centre's. Its Government run and specially made buildings test hundreds of cars each day. If you fail on anything then it can only be retested on that fail and you can go to any of the test centres. The whole procedure takes about 20 mins and I cant fault it.

Very similar to here in Portugal, the IPO inspection is far more laid back, if you get a fail they actually give you a one month certificate to get the work done, and only test the fail items next time, and as in Ni can go back to any testing station. Mostly all IPO stations are welcoming and they have NO agenda to fail or pass your car as they do not do any mechanical work themselves.

The one close by me in Porches, is a nice relaxed place, nice garden at the front, waiting area that a main dealer would be proud of free drinks and wide screen tv etc. and you just turn up and as there is often a surplus of testers get seen straight away and best of all 38 Euro.

I had to argue about having HIDs with no headlight washers fitted!

Thing is I used the same garage last year & the year before that for my MOTs & no previous mention about having to have headlight washers fitted !

There is a requirement to have washers with HIDs though (EU, not sure about UK specifically). You'll usually get away with it if they're factory-fitted like that but it's understandable why they have an issue with retrofitted HIDs...

Just to clarify that vehicles fitted with HID lamps DO NOT require washers or self levelling systems fitted as a rule.

Only if fitted then they are required to work.this applies to HID fitted as standard or retrofit.

As for the advisory system you must understand that we as testers are required to all test from the same set of regs but sometimes the human element does play a part and things can go wrong as with anything.

Dont be surprised if when taking your car for a retest at a different test centre to where the original test was done that it may fail or pass on different things. One tester may see or feel something the other did not.

Always stick to the original test centre if you can. Even though different testers at the same place are within their rights to fail a vehicle on something else depending on the original failure items.

An mot pass is not evidence of a roadworthy vehicle in any way.

And dont forget if you want to keep your mot history clean then simply book an mot pre inspection and have all the work done prior to a test.

Dont view your mot as a means of giving your vehicle a full inspection l....... it isnt :thumbup1:

N.I centres are very strict, one thing they were very tight on was, aftermarket Xenon kits. They had a strange rule on this, if the vehicle didn't have headlight wash, it would NOT pass mot.

Assuming NI test to the same criteria as the uk then that is simply wrong.

I would have thought the same as N.I is supposed to be part of UK! However that's the way it is or at least was the setup.

There is no failure option for washers not fitted...it is physically impossible for a tester to fail for "not fitted" we dont have the ability to write a failure of our own. Would be interesting to see the failure option they have used on a test cert.

Not 100% sure what the rule is here but would think that Chris is right Sudesh as UK mainland and N.I. have the same rules.

You won't have any problems if your car is stock in Portugal...change anything from standard then your problems will start.

Come to Belgium and try to get your car MOT'd if not completely original.....hell I tell you. You have rims or coilovers ( the only technical things permitted) you have to pass a special "tuning" test and off course, pay extra. Everything else is forbidden in Belgium even if the changes are an improvement like steel brake-line's....forbidden! Oh.... and here, if you don't have headlamp washers AND automatic hight-control on the headlights, HID is forbidden too .

The DVSA that runs the uk mot system have over the past few years invested heavily in bringing the uk mot system into line with the EU. basically they wanted a system whereby an mot done anywhere in the EU was valid anywhere in the EU.

I wonder what impact brexit will bring in future for the uk mot scheme....... Sorry if going off topic here.

Well considering the current (and imo logical decision) is to validate everything as stands as UK law. What ever it is on the cut off point (this week maybe) is what it will remain to be. They will then amend and omit as they go. So basically I'd expect very little change with MOT law from the current stance.

I only took it to a different MOT station as they charge £19 odd for a retest, it was £39 for the initial test, so i went else where that charge £30 and a free retest, so financially it was a more viable option..... should have gone there in the first place lol and as it failed again on retest, cost me no extra going back for a partial within 10 days.

Most garages ive been to dont bother with a pre MOT check, obviously costs money to me and if nothing needed doing then pay extra for the MOT, so most just do an MOT as in the long run i guess saves money.

The benefit of a pre mot inspection is that it can highlight potential problems which allows them to be sorted before the whole thing becomes "official". It allows time for any repairs to be made (more than the ten day rule etc). It is a more thorough inspection than the mot itself would be.

And it woukd keep the advisory box empty which is why this thread was started if the advisories were rectified pre test.
