Has anybody looked at doing this?. Wiring wise its simple, however unsure as to what donor mirror may fit into the 300 ZX standard fitting,

Thoughts ??

I did a while ago but couldn't find anything that fitted other cars that would mount in the same position.

Cars that generally have this equipment fitted are part of a large housing affixed to the screen containing other sensors for auto washwipe, auto headlights and a sensor for the autodip on the wing mirrors.

The Z32 mirror is mounted on a small spindle press-fitted to a bolt in the roof. I haven't seen another car with this equipment fitted that would enable fitment to a location similar to that on our cars.

Si, have a gander at a saab 9-5 auto dim mirror or a mazda 3 , thoughts ?

Hadn't come across that one, could work! Looks like the mount point is the same style. I'd paint that grey bit black though. It might look a little unfinished with exposed screw holes, but looks like it will fit. Don't think the Mazda 3 one would fit.

Never would have believed how good auto dim rear view mirrors are before I had one, I do miss it in the zed. Does the saab one clear when in reverse? Did in my old 406, I do have a 95 but haven't noticed... maybe that means it's working

yep, auto dim mirror from a saab 95 now fitted, including the auto clear in reverse, a dam good mod in my eyes, ill post up some snaps if anybody is interested,

Hmm let's see how much the Z community affects the prices of this mirror haha

Nice work sayers, my last two BMW and Lynda`s Audi had / have them fitted, first BMW had an electric rear blind that was up most of the time, my current BMW I had the back glass limo black to stop the Algarve sun crisping my back seats and the Audi comes with factory black rear windows so all in all never get to see them working LOL

Yup - I'm interested too......

.....It sounds a great modification - I have it in the SLC; including the driver's door mirror, and have certainly gotten used to it...!!!

I have something to say............ It's better to burn out than to fade away..... :tt2:

In truth chaps, the mod is simple , but needs a fair bit of work, ill put the pics up on Friday, however in advance, I had to graft the ball of the Saab fitting onto some 90 degree copper elbows, then the other end I used the standard z32 fitting and grafted them together with solder, to finish it was ground back to make it look like a continuous arm, then sprayed satin black and fitted,

To connect electrically , one wire ( black) to ground, the green wire connects to a reverse switch live feed, the red connects to the sampling fan ignition live.

I've just done mine, because I don't use my sun visors I've mounted the two parts together 4f0a13040bb40d9036f130ccc191bf5f.jpg all I've go to do is wire it in.

There you go chaps, happy viewing , the wires which are showing in a couple of the snaps have now been tucked back, and the front trim straightened, happy days
