Good friend in the UK sent me a couple of pics yesterday, his son and mate had been invited to a car test day at a local dealer and whilst on a test drive this happened !!

No one hurt thankfully but sad end for the car, they said it went from a small lick of flame at the rear to full inferno in a matter of one minute, was a gonna even if you had am extinguisher..

Strange really that the likes of Ferrari, Mclearn and Lambo can't seem to master what Ford, BMW even Kia can. Engine bays that don't burst into flames. Hilarious really, "oh it's the insulation" did you not do extensive testing before using the product on a car that costs more than a house. Bit of a trend this.

Scary. Do they know what caused the fire?

No not mentioned it in full, but speculating an oil line let go and sprayed over the cats !

Take it they aren't buying it :innocent:

Erm.... NO ! LOL

I suppose there's just a greater likelihood in a highly-strung supercar. No matter what you do, they're going to generate a lot of heat.

You do still see it sometimes in mundane cars though. Wasn't there a problem with the Opel Insignia a few years back?

Yes the Vauxhall Zafira would burst into flames for no reason. :scared: Most Z owners have a flare in the passengers footwell that is over 20 years old and maybe they should take it out and fit a fire extinguisher in its place.

I do take your point and certainly in the design phase it's to be expected but not post production. They should be making 110% sure that the materials being used are up to the job. A lot of it has been sound deadening and stuff that's not as heat resistant as they expected, questions such as did you not test this? Are very fair to ask.

Tbf every Vauxhall I've had has fallen apart as it goes along.

Never owned a Vauxhall or Opel but did love the Opel Manta.

Warning to all after winter hibernation - and general maintenance anyway - check all your fuel lines. Z32 fuel lines in many cars are old, cracked or loose. The older style worm-drive hose clips are not maintenance free.

A shame to watch but it happens!

Notice how they are able to deal with the problem and allow traffic to continue. If that was in this country they would have closed both sides of the motorway for 2 weeks.....

They closed the main road into the county(closest thing to a motorway we've got) last summer for 9 hours because some grockle crashed a caravan in a one vechile incident for wait for it...9 hours.

Came past a Ford Transit on fire on the M25 tonight, just past Clacketts Lane services. The emergency services hadn't arrived and it was at full tilt. The emergency phone 20ft away had melted, and I could feel the heat as I passed the scene and that was in lane 3, with the windows up!

Threads like this remind me to buy a bloody good fire extinguisher.

This....

At risk of going slightly off-topic, I agree with Chris. Never happened in the "old days"....!

I have something to say............ It's better to burn out than to fade away..... :tt2:

Crazy isn't it, there's a weird patch on the A31 just after the M27 where a car fire melted the asphalt and it had to be patched. The hard shoulder is still melted.

I know of someone who had a Lotus Europa that caught fie on the A1 at Hatfield. It burnt so hot that it melted the lamp post he stopped near which collapsed on the car.

Also someone who's Lotus Sunbeam, which had just been immaculately restored, got about 50 yards outside the village, caught fire and melted the tarmac.

With Spring around the corner, time to do the annual fuel leak check over:

Nissan fixed the fuel clamp problem later in the Z32 production cycle with spring clips (part #16439-16E0A) which

allow for the contraction of the pipes with age.

Very sensible - that would save the bi-annual "tightening up the jubilee clips" ritual, for sure....

True, however there's a number of reasons for that. Firstly, US Interstate Highways have a wide hard shoulder either side of the road meaning access by emergency services is fairly straightforward, secondly, that highway is made from concrete, so there will be little issue with the tarmac melting and giving way thus negating the need for resurfacing.

Not sure it's a great idea though as if the tank was to blow, you'd get some of the incoming. Tyres exploding can cause nasty damage too.

Those three brands have quality issues in other areas

They all have problems, bursting into fire with regularity is quite a big issue though.

A fireman told my old man years ago that cars don't explode in real life, only in films. My dad asked if they should be standing further away from his burning car  not sure how much I believe it mind!

Having seen about a dozen cars burn to the ground I'd agree with him. The tyres pop which is quite loud but I've never seen a fuel tank go. One thing I will tell you though is the heat is unreal and the smell, well you won't forget it.

What does go well is a gas canister on a fire which you then shoot, boomshakalacka! corse you don't do things like that though cos it's incredibly stupid.
