Posted November 2, 20168 yr My clutch and flywheel need replacing very soon, so I'm looking for recommendations please. From a financial viewpoint, I'm looking at the XTD kit (with the clutch) but I've heard the odd bad thing about them... can anyone who's either actively running this kit (or has in the past) comment? Or has anyone got a good lightweight flywheel that they need to part with? Thanks. :)
November 2, 20168 yr Heard that the flywheels are good but clutches not so good. Hear good things about Competition Clutch setup ,( im running their clutch all good to now). Fidanza flywheels have a good rep
November 2, 20168 yr Lee recommended me the xtd clutch (unless you are looking at comp clutches) so I have the stage 3 one now. He said he's had 1 fail in 7 years. Make sure you get the TT one (black flywheel) and not the Na one Haven't fitted it yet so can't comment on how it feels, but its a 6pck so probably trash around town. Or has anyone got a good lightweight flywheel that they need to part with? Baz has a lightweight one but it needs skimming Edited November 2, 20168 yr by Alic
November 2, 20168 yr I've got the RPS Lightweight Segmented Flywheel from Z1 back in '09, I've an Exedy Stage 1 Organic clutch mated to it, haven't done any more than 3-500 miles on them though:no::no: i'll be swapping out the Exedy for an XTD Stage 3 over the next week if it's any use to you Si:thumbup1: Edited November 2, 20168 yr by Richie K
November 2, 20168 yr I've got the XTD stage 3 TT clutch and flywheel. I haven't driven any other (not slipping) clutches so can't really compare for you, but I can say I have no problem with mine. It can be a bit juddery around town but you quickly learn how it likes to be driven, and I can't say it's ever bothered me for a second. Very pleased for the price
November 2, 20168 yr Author This is interesting. On their own website, XTD don't actually seem to list any flywheel options for the Z32.... Are the ones on eBay old stock? Or knock-offs? Anyone got any ideas what the deal is....?
November 2, 20168 yr Not sure but got one here, has XTD logos on the parts etc. Seems genuine Edited November 2, 20168 yr by Alic
November 2, 20168 yr RPS, RPS, job a goodun! This is what I'm going for next! Love the OEM feel to it. Nice, light and progressive clutch operation!
November 2, 20168 yr RPS is good. My recommendation will be Southbend it will not affect clutch pedal feel (will feel just like the OEM) and will provide a much better performance. Joe at Zspeed can help you with a recommendation based on the modifications you have. http://zspeedperformance.com/90-96-300zx-Twin-Turbo-Clutch-Kits-Flywheels_c197.htm If you are looking for a more aggressive clutch the Specialty Z 5 puck will fit the bill. Rob The RPS from SZ, with the redesigned fulcrum (silver casing), is as light or arguably lighter than a stock clutch, its lighter than my daily drive! It has a proven track record for quality and reliability and will handle buckets of torque. Just make sure you pair it up with the uprated fork kit.
November 2, 20168 yr I have the XTD and the flywheel, not had a single problem with it, handles my 500.
November 2, 20168 yr I have the RPS MK1 clutch and segmented RPS flywheel. Heavier than stock (but not by much). MK2 is lighter. Uses the stock friction plate and has smooth takeup. Very tough and reliable. While you have the gearbox off worth fitting a 350Z cast iron fork kit. She's so fine, there's no tellin' where the money went - Simply irresistible.
November 2, 20168 yr And the bonus is the rps flywheel can be repaired, new faces are available as a kit around 100 dollars, tbh i dont like Fidanza the faces warp as its a solid bolt on plate that cant expand and contract like the segmented RPS,And you dont need a puck clutch Si a full face will cope fine with your power levels.
November 2, 20168 yr Heavy duty clutch fork, pivot ball, throw out bearing are all jobs you must do while changing the clutch.
November 4, 20168 yr Author Looks like this conundrum has been sorted now, by way of an RPS flywheel for me :thumbup1:
November 4, 20168 yr Question. Why are you replacing the fly wheel in the first instance? Obviously the clutch plate and friction disc wear but is there a known issue with the fly? Obviously we all know a light fly reduces rotational mass, blah blah. That comes at a cost though, that rotational mass is there for inertia helping you pull away etc. I'm not saying you will ruin the street ability of the car that's nonsense but the gains you will gain may be of no real world use to you and the cost a touch worse in some scenarios. Do a bit of reading. You've already been advised a good one which is great but for anyone thinking of cheaping out it's a component not to skimp on. A poorly made flywheel that's let go is like a hand grenade and could see you or your passenger loose there legs!
November 4, 20168 yr Author Question. Why are you replacing the fly wheel in the first instance? For one reason or another, the ring gear on my current XTD fly is completely mangled in places. If anyone remembers me moaning about the grinding starter motor issue I had a while back, it seems that the chewed-up teeth on the ring gear are responsible for that.
November 4, 20168 yr The RPS Flywheel is one of the best flywheels available to the Z32, Specialty Z are so happy with the RPS that they're now working together with the SZ-RPS clutches, they even state on their own site that the flywheel was so good they couldn't improve upon them:thumbup:
November 6, 20168 yr Same goes for me but I have an '91 N/A. Best clutch kit for that? Define "best clutch kit". For a stock Na I would probably just say the OE clutch.
November 6, 20168 yr Define "best clutch kit". For a stock Na I would probably just say the OE clutch. Been looking and I'm not going to spend a fortune. So OE would be the route there. Not going to be doing anything crazy in the engine for a while. Waiting on a price to come back from the paint shop first.
November 7, 20168 yr Same goes for me but I have an '91 N/A. Best clutch kit for that? JWT Clutch and flywheel, have that one on mine and it is more than enough. Rob
