Ok, I'm considering fitting tyres (from Ebay) myself by hand.

I've watched Youtube videos, and it looks simple enough using a pry bar or crow bar, some tyre lube stuff etc. Maybe they're just making it look easy...

I don't want to ruin my new virgin rims.

Just wondered if anyone had fitted their own tyres in a similar way and had any advice?

Cheers!

Simple....................... do not do it, they will need balancing after anyhow and be sure to damage the wheels anyway.

They're brand new wheel, therefore do they still need balancing? Sorry if it's a stupid question...never had brand new wheels before.

A local tyre shop charges £10-15 for fit valve and balance so why risk it yourself?

My wheels came with nice aluminum valves so I already have them, I also have four wheels to do.

Ok...maybe not worth it for £40- £60...

Most times the tyres need balancing as much as the wheels.

Every garage I've ever been to charges £10 for all the wheels. Its not worth mucking around trying to do it yourself, this is the kind of job that you just pay for.

As above without a doubt, old steel wheels with tyre levers you can get away with, but alloys and polished rims, not a chance without some sort of damage or scratch. Most one man bands i know even have a proper tyre machine, quicker and more efficient:thumbup1:

My mate did mine for like a fiver (was 2 wheels)

Yup - as above.....

It's pointless - just have a tyre fitter do it for you. It will take minutes - and they will balance the wheels within their price. If you try it yourself, you'll still pay at least £10 per wheel, after you're done fitting the tyre, so you might as well have had them fitted!

And yes - it's not ultimately the wheels, more like the tyres that need the balance.

For starters, there's a hole in the metal rim where the rubber valve has to poke through. Instant weight difference on that area of the wheel. Secondly new tyres will never have perfect weight distribution all round; owing to how the tread is applied in the manufacturing process.
