Hi All,

Just took delivery of my first 300ZX this weekend! Its a 92 TT auto. Already taken to London and back (500 mile round trip) and even the wife is well impressed. Methinks a good choice of car!

I have a few questions?

1. Having enjoyed the traffic of the M25 yesterday, sat in traffic for 2 hours and moving a phenomenal 1 MPH, the car occasionally stalled going from N to D. Is this something to be overly concerned about? It restarted fine, drives fine, and idles smoothly at 750 rpm. I also get full boost (700 mmHg) so I think that the engine management, etc. is OK, and the car never even got hot (on the gauge at least) - yet to do a diagnostic though!

2. Can anyone shed any light on the Hold function of the gearbox? I almost got stuck in a compromising situation when I pulled out of a siding expecting full (aircraft) thrust, and all I got was normal acceleration. Does Hold restrict boost?

3. I managed 250(ish) miles on 2/3 tank of fuel - is this good? Judging by some stuff I've read its probably better than I expected.

I'm sure I'll have lots more stuff to ask as I get used to the car, but at the moment I'm just grinning from ear to ear!

Have a good Xmas and New Year, all.

1. Hmm not sure - definitely not right, it's not supposed to do that... Could well just be something to do with the idle air control valve (back pass. side of the inlet plenum) connectors or the valve being gummed up..

2. If the gear lever is in D, then Hold will keep you in top (3rd) and never drop to 2nd or 1st. If it is in 2, then it will never use 1st, and if the lever is in 1st, it has no effect.. It has no effect on the boost level.

3. I've never got that far on a full tank, so that sounds good to me :D

Welcome Stuart.

1) You shouldn't get any stalling so there's something to look for. Do an ECU diagnostic, check for air leaks, check electrical connectors. Searches on here should give you some more detailed info. Also, I'm guessing that you were putting it in neutral when you stopped. There's no need to do this and some even say that you shouldn't do it as ATF fluid flows better in Drive.

2) Hold means you end up in a gear higher than you'd normally be and the changes are at lower revs. So when you pulled away, you were actually in second, not first. Again, a search will give you a more detailed reply.

3) You're driving like a girl ! People on here DREAM of fuel consumption like that !

Dave

Welcome aboard

Cant answer much about auto's cos mines manual but i think the hold button stops the box from kicking down, There's plenty of auto experts here to help ya :D

I dont think they are that bad on fuel either, you can get 20mpg around town if your not thrashing it and 25+ on the motorway.

Dont trust the stock boost gauge anyway they are crap.

Have fun and take it easy in the wet ;)

:D Great cars are they not Stuart!fecking brilliant(when they behave,ha,ha)actually,ok,Hold=never use it unless theres snow on the ground, leave it in second, hold on,gives you better traction on pulling away in the stuff,Neutral=never use it,only handy if you switch off in Park, car wont start,if you need to push it off the road or what ever, then lift up small red lever at back of gear stick, press in button on side of stick, then you can drop it into Neutral. So far so good i hope, next,Power button= keeps car in gears till reach's max rpm, allso comes in when you floor it with button off position, max rpm around 6,500 maybe bit more,if you have a ALC inline upgrade you looking at around or just over 7,500(with i think a ecu upgrade included)and it feckin flys i can tell ya,ha,ha.AS mpg sounds very good to me,but you do not say if its an import or uk,plus run it on super unleaded or shell optimax if you can get it,just to be safe(beware of detting if running on normal unleaded).Happy safe enjoyable zed driving to you, they are a wicked car, love em soooooooooo much(real shit i have to let mine go soon:mad: )Tony:D :D :D

Welcome aboard Stuart!

Unfortunately I'm too pissed (and stupid) to answer any of your questions, but believe me, you'll find the ownership experience extremely addictive.

I've had two now (last one prematurely snatched away unfortunately:( ) but had no hesitation in what to look for to replace it!

Happy Christmas.

Thanks Guys,

Looks like I'm in for a load of fun!

I plan to do the diagnostic stuff over the holidays, but I don't expect I'll find too much amiss (fingers crossed) - and if I do, the warranty should sort it out. The stalling only happened twice, and Hairsy is right - I was switching between N and D. I had a right panic before realising you can't start the car in D!!!! There was me thinking it was dead - apparently I went as white as a sheet!

Got much better mileage on the way down than back up again - I suppose the M25 carpark didn't help. And yes (Hairsy) - I WAS driving like a girl (so many people have warned me its a license loser!)

And the car is a Jap import - its still got the flare on the passenger side! At least I think its a flare

I'll be sure to call on the years of accumulated wisdom (?!!) should I find anything unexpected!

Again Happy XMas, etc. to everyone.

Stalling sounds like the FICD valve to me. Do the engine revs increase if you put the air con on? If not then you have your answer ;)

Welcome aboard btw ;)

Welcome to the place.

The Five-0 frown upon them flares so I'd remove it to somewhere safe.

Have a great 2003 with a double helping of turbos:)

Welcome to the madouse, id get that flare out of it as soon as you can if i were you. Ive heard they are none too safe.

Happy zedding.

 still got my flare, had no idea they could be unstable and no idea the bill dont like em!,will remove asap then!

A stick that when you fire it into the air it lights up the sky. Where we have the reflective triangles the Japanese use flares.

But at 10 years old they can be dangerous.

:D Great idea!,when travelling late at night,no one about, stop at lights, shit heads of a unsavoury nature try to hold you up and nick the car,so reach over, pull on flare, ooops, unsavoury bloke goes running up the road looking like an advert for napalm sales, engulfed in a fire ball n smoke, then drive off through the haze into the night, thinking job well done(and still sleep easy),not serious chaps, just sounds like a brill antitheft device,ha,ha,hahahahahaha:D :D :D
