Just before going for a quick spin, I thought I would just check a couple of things like exhaust mountings, break lines etc'

Lucky I did, I discovered that my front cross member has collapsed on the front near side due to corrosion!

I cant believe how bad it looks, so gutted to say the least!

Looks like a very difficult job to me, so distraught at the moment.

Especially with the Coventry meet just around the corner and my MOT in a months time!

I could really do with some experienced advise as to how to approach this one, I am worried that it could be the end of the car.

Please see pictures below, 3 of the near side and 1 of the far side.

Hey guys, I've got some hard pipes to replace the soft plenum pipes, there are four boost hoses? I think that's the correct name.. Anyways, can anyone show me which pipe goes in which position as I'm about to do some dipping on them and need to know the positions so I dip the designs the right way up.. because they aren't all the same, it's giving me a headache!

In between work and two hours sleep I started to dip my best mates gen 7 celica engine bay today.

Opinions welcomed..

Obviously isn't to everyone's taste but i got to say I'm chuffed with the results..

Assuming yours are the same as mine, on the bigger inner ones the joint is at the top, and the thinner outside ones the joint is furthest to the front of the car.

I think I've got that? Lol..

I'll have to check the pipes when I finish work as I can't remember what they look like to be able to compare at the moment, but thanks for that mate, I'm sure it will all make sense when I have them in front of me! Maybe...

I bought the pipes from ebay and have been told they are normally a very tight fit, so the grinder will be on hand to give them a helping hand if needs be.

Here's a photo of the pipes..

Could you reupload the picture? Mine weren't very hard to fit whatsoever, in fact the stock rubbers were twice as hard to remove.

Just another quicky..

The plenum for the Z, are there any differences between the auto and manual versions? I am aware that the balance tube has a pipe used in the manual car, but are the plenums the same?

Any better this time?

They look roughly the same, not sure why with the thinner ones one has a bend both sides and the other just one?

But it should be:

Bigger ones, bend at the top by the throttle bodies

Smaller ones, bend at the front of car, near the radiator.

also not our thread so try and keep it on topic ;)

If you hell bent on changing it then be prepared to remove a lot of kit, one I did about 10 years ago:

Old damaged one cut out surfaces cleaned and new one refitted welded in place.

Thanks Jeff, very informative, and as you say, looks like I have got my work cut out.

Surely not all of that has to come out Jeff? The acordion pipes, Inter cooler to throttle body pipes, there all on the side of the rad that should have little bearing if any no? I'm sure the cornettos are from the boot in fact.

Has anyone got an exploded body shell schematic type diagram of this area?

Particularly the weld points.

long shot I guess.

actually it's one piece (see picture I posted), but for some reason it lists the 2 brackets on the side as separate parts

Thanks mate, that's reassuring to know. :thumbup1:

So by the looks of things red, you need parts 38, 33 & 35 from that schematic yes?

If that's the case, I'll get on to taking it out on the weekend..

I've got loads to strip out of it so I'll get the front apart and cut around the welds to the inner wings and chassis, so you'll just need to grind the bits away that you don't need mate.

Shouldn't be too difficult now I can stand in the engine bay :tt2:

I'll send you a photo when it's out.. Oh and sorry for the questions on your thread red, I meant to put that in a different one but had a blonde moment.. In fact peroxide cos I did it twice! Lol..

Yes mate, items 38,35 and 33, as Lymon said, all as one item though.

I must say, I am blown away with your generosity and help. Humbled.

As you say, I am happy to accept whatever you can cut out, I am happy to trim up the excess in readiness for refitting my end.

My only reservation is that it is corrosion free, well close to if possible, something I can treat before fitting.

Again, thank you for your efforts and generosity, I look forward to your photos.

No worries about the hijack mate, no harm done.

Red, it was gonna get scrapped if you hadn't wanted it anyway,so it's best it goes back in to keeping a Z alive in my mind..

I will closely inspect the part and if it has any signs of bad deterioration I will let you know immediately so you can source another, but from what I've seen of it, it's covered in oil and nothing that's covered in oil can be that rusty!

I'll clean it up and rust treat it and then hammerite it black for you mate..

The fact that you're prepared to put the work in to save the car is good enough for me to want to help you out..

The other thing is, why waste a perfectly good member? Even a woman couldn't disagree with that one!

Cheers mate,

Please don't go to the trouble of painting it etc' I need to see it in all its naked glory, if you know what I mean.

That way I can be confidant of the integrity prior to welding into position, hope you understand where I am coming from.

Also, I have some very good rust preventative treatments that I would like to apply.

As you say, I need to save her after 12 years of ownership, I owe her that.

That's fine red I totally get where you're coming from.. Seeing is believing mate and I'm sure I'd be the same if it were me in your shoes..

I'm sure that the car owes you more than it owes you, this is a fact of ownership with these old girls but the fact that your prepared to put the toil in to repairing her earns you my respect..

Too many people really don't care enough about their cars to go through the hard work to keep them alive.. We live in a throw away society nowdays.. Some things don't belong in that category and a 300zx is one of them..

I'll see if I can get some decent photos of the area in this car to show you it's condition.. I'll jet wash the oil off it first though or I might aswell send you a blank photo! Lol
