Help and guidance on whether to sell my LWB TT JDM as a breaker or for repair.

 Ok! I have put this off as long as I can, but a decision needs to me made as to what I do with my LWB TT.

The car has been sat on the drive (undercover) awaiting an engine change (big ends) and although I have purchased a spare engine (needs some valve work) and still have a number of performance upgrades which were going on it, I simply don't have the time or enthusiasm to undertake the work.

I won't go into details but the last 18 months have been very difficult and every morning I look at this car and think it deserves so much better and as things stand I really need to free up space and cash to re invest into my new detailing business.

So, given that this car is in overall good condition and as a repair would be sold with the spare engine and upgrades as a package would I be better off breaking myself given parts prices or sell as a whole.

The car will need a new outer rear Cill, which has gone through since it's been standing! I have'n't looked in detail about any further issues, but at the moment I am looking for the forums opinions before a follow up with a for sale thread.

Sadly! I never really got to bond with the car after only a short time of ownership before the engine let go, so my enthusiasm and other distractions have stopped my undertaking the work despite investing in Engine stands, engine lift and all the necessary spares. It really deserves better.

Thanks, Steve

You keep it and you do things bit-by-bit. Don't try and get everything done all at once.

What's happened anyway dude?

I would say that you will probably get more money for it by breaking it but you won't free up the space that quickly. Is it a manual or auto? What's the inside like? Any pictures? If you decide to sell bits off I would be interested in the engine lift.

On the other hand, if you need any help getting the work done I'm not that far away and I would gladly lend a hand to get the work done

Mines been off the road over a year Steve, same problem, other things get in the way to getting started on changing the engine, although that will change in the next couple of weeks, if you need a hand or just a good talking too, i can come over to Pompi anytime:thumbup:

Going to be harsh here Steve. Sell it. If you have no time or enthusiasm it will just sit there dying on the driveway and making you feel bad. Sell up and buy another that will put a smile on your face it does not have to be a show car just one that has a good engine and sound body and you can drive and upgrade it at your leisure mate.

The car had supposedly had been subject to a full rebuild when i bought it, so i wasn't too impressed to have the bottom end go on me, although I felt there was a possible oil flow issue with the car, so probably my own fault to have pushed it on the occasion it let go.

But whilst i was determined to put it back on the road and spent time getting replacements and upgrades to do the job, the more I looked it the less it appealed, particularly as issues with my business closing after 25 years have got in the way...

I guess with these cars you either have time to form a bond that gets under your skin or as in my case a fleeting visit into something that I felt would be much more engaging. In my research prior to buying the car, the view point always came across as strong engines which can take potentially big power gains and yet when I purchased it I seemed to find more and more negative reports of poor cooling, blocked oil journals and particular issues with specific cylinders!

In reality I was perhaps unknowingly being a bit selective in my research but having looked at several cars before heading to Edinburgh to buy J299, I felt I knew enough to make an informed choice. The car was serviced and checked over but within 6 months and 400 miles of running I had the engine go on me, since which it's been sat for nigh on two years waiting for me to sort it.

The new business is picking up, but pressures from the past mean I need to still try to find additional income and I've probably put this off too long already...also got a moody 14 year old to deal with as the car was his bragging rights! lol!

Capped this weekend with my BMW getting wiped out by a drunk driver the day before it was going up for sale and the wife taking a fall and now on crutches!, I have finaly lost patience.

Thanks for the offer of help lads, I am sure with more hands the job would be much easier, but i still need to get the replacement engine up to scratch as it appears to have some valve leakage although it was sold to me as good to go. I know this in itself is not a big job but it is another bill to pay and time to find.

Gaz your probably right, Sell it and move on, I posted the thread really to get some opinion as to whether it would be worth more breaking it (hate the idea) or selling as a project for someone else and which might ultimately be the financially stronger.!

Mines in the garage brother and has been for most of my ownership.... I think I have driven it about 5 times since I bought it in October. I'm doing things as I go along! Not so much because of money restraints but because of time restraints. These cars are good investments I feel so will be worth the slow time it takes to complete a project.

I simply don't have the time or enthusiasm to undertake the work.

Breaking a car is a big undertaking and involves huge numbers of hours....taking it apart especially without a nice well fitted warm garage to use... Advertizing parts...dealing with the time wasters and the hagglers of which the world is full of......finding/buying packaging... getting items packaged.....arranging courier quotes.... getting them to a parcel shop or waiting at home for a pickup.

Only you know if you have the time and enthusiasm for that.

In your situation I would sell it off as one item. keep the tools etc

Spend time with your 14 year old cos there might come a day in the not too distant future when he doesnt want to spend time with you.

Family First

Business second(for the self employed)

Big boys toys are an optional extra in life that you can return to in more favourable circumstances.

All IMHO of course.

I drive past your car every now and then with work, and it looks in good exterior condition, have you made any progress with the engine? Or are you still looking to sell?

All IMHO too......

I have something to say............ It's better to burn out than to fade away..... :tt2:

I have to agree with Pete too. The enthusiasm and time are your issue and finding either of those to pull apart a car that you don't really want to pull apart and deal with the crap is pretty demanding. That other block you've got might not take all that much cash/effort to refresh. Exchanging the blocks is something that can be done over a weekend quite casually.

Also the offer is still there if you need a hand with it just let me know mate.

I just wanted to say a huge thanks to Pig and Sayers for their generous offer of helping with an engine pull, given Neil was prepared to come down from the Black country to do this shows fantastic club spirit and so worth a mention.

Unless issues here can be resolved soon it looks like I will be moving J299 on! However for a bit of indulgence i thought I would share a picture from yesterday when I gave her a long overdue wash... not very helpful when I'm trying to make a decisionand I see her looking like this! Hope you don't mind.
