I have a friend who has done windscreen replacements before, but is there anything special about the Z we should know about?

 

In particular, trim that cannot be saved.

 

Got a quote from national windscreens a while back for something like £290 + VAT for the window and fitting, excluding any trim, which is pretty high, hence my worry.

 

Also if anyone knows of suppliers of the glass in/near Edinburgh please mention (blue tint)

Nah man not yet. I put my request for a quote for the glass up on national windscreens, got one quote for a used windscreen for £100 + £50 delivery.

 

At that price I'm tempted to just fork out and get it done professionally, at least it'll be under a warranty that way.

 

Going to shop around anyway, but my 300 is currently on axles for other work

Is there any reason you are not claiming off your insurance......? I'd have thought Autoglass could get a 'screen in a couple of days; and you'd only have your excess (c£75?) to pay.

If you can get down to Dundonald near troon within the next two weeks you can have blue tint glass for free if you can get it off my old zed.

I once heard insurance companies would write off older cars if they couldn't easily get new screens?

Richard, as it stands there's no insurance, tax or MOT, so that's out of the question. The windscreen has a gaping hole in it from a large bottle missile.

Front screens are made under licence by Pilkington and are the only glass part that is. Having a new windscreen will entail removal of the windscreen trim, the cowls (which are sometimes brittle), their associated fasteners which fall to bits and the top seal.

 

New Pilkington screens don't come with the original top-seal - this will have to be ordered separately from Nissan (it can't be saved). There was a time when replacement screens also came complete with new windscreen side trims, but I believe this is no longer the case. So bear that in mind. Windscreen trims are also a pain in the ass to refit, even new ones take some fiddling around and plenty of swearing.

 

If you're going to do that part yourself, I advise replacing the top clips and when removing or refitting, do that prior to refitting the cowls.

 

I am surprised National Windscreens quoted you that much, unless of course you were quoted on a bronze-tint replacement. The blue-tint glass will cost you about £150-£200 fitted, but then you're blighted with miss-matched glass if your Z is an early import with bronze glass.
