Ok guys, probably should of started this last year when I decided to resurrect my 1993 JDM 300zx Twin Turbo Auto. I said I call the car "Blue Thunder" (mostly just to annoy everyone:tt2:) as it will be loud and blue:thumbup:.

You'll have to bear with me as I'm going to use previous posts off this forum for most of the current bits and I'm not "computer super proficient" with adding images etc

I'll start at the very beginning if I can remember back that far:lol: (No pics in this quick update) (This is for the benefit of anyone joining after '09)

Bought the car in the summer of 2005, a low mileage (42K) 1993 300zx TT auto, within a few months the timing belt had stripped some teeth, luckily no engine damage. Replaced belts, series 2 PTU and bought my 19" TSW Catalunyas. Had to get the rear wheels custom made to 9.5" as they weren't available in this size:thumbup1:. Went on to buy a Pioneer Avic X1R single DIN touchscreen Sat-Nav stereo to liven up the sounds and my Brembo Big Brake kit.

July 2006 - Engine had a ticking noise, nothing major, diagnosed as sticky lifters, recommended solution was an oil change. Bought 2 4.5 litres of Castrol Edge 10W60, oil filter and an engine flush, brought it to a "garage" and asked them to drop the oil, using the engine flush, refill with the fresh Castrol oil heat it up, flush it out, fit the new filter and refill with the other container of Castrol Edge...Simples:innocent:

Collected the car and went home, got to the house and the engine turned into a tractor, lifted the bonnet, oil everywhere, they'd put the full 9 liters into the car and wrecked the engine.:scared::thumbdown: After a few arguments and the backing of the Motor Factors owner where the oil was bought, the "Garage" eventually admitted responsibility. They sent the car to another "Garage" who was fitting the new engine from API, more drama, Radio was stolen in their care and engine lasted a day, oil sump had been damaged and suction pipe couldn't get enough oil in, another knackered engine:scared::thumbdown:.

2007 - Sued the "Garage" and got the car back 2008.:thumbup1:

2008 - 2009 Went to a decent bloke who sorted the engine, did the manual conversion, fitted a brand new Exedy street performance clutch with an RPS Lightweight Flywheel, BuddyClub Racing Spec Coilovers, Z1 hardpipes and HKS Induction kit. November '09 Hydrolocked the engine driving into a puddle:scared::thumbdown:

2010 - After getting "Ripped off" on a Border Fuel Rail, 555 injectors and Japanese "UK" Clocks (meant to be UK but had been converted) and with a 9% pay deduction and extra Levies / charges on Civil Servants (totalling a 60% deduction of my already diminished gross pay), I called it a day on the Z:thumbdown:

40P is the designation for pre 96 turbo heads. NA ones are stamped 30P till 93, at which point they become 10Y. Late style turbo heads are labelled 48P.

The poo heads will still be labelled 40P but I believe the engine serial is within a set range. You will find this behind the drivers side head.

Stephen, you are correct, up to an extent. As you correctly pointed out, the heads are still labeled 40P and later changed to 48P for TT models, it is the valves that need to be checked. Early models had an issue with the metal alloy nissan used to fabricate the valves. Nissan then figured out the issue and changed the alloy to make a stronger valve.

Rich, check your valves while you have the heads out

Here is what you are looking for

softvalvedamage1.JPG

If your valves look like the one on the right then your heads have what's called the "soft valves" and I would advise you to replace them with a new set of valves.

Rob

From what I've read. VG30DETT Engines with the serial lower than 619550 may have soft valves. Other than that to prove 100% its head off, the desirable valves have EG stamped on them.

You guys may have noticed that I've been unusually quiet on this thread for the last 3 weeks, that's because I've been busy organising the last few pieces of my Zed jigsaw, some of it is a tad exorbitant and maybe even overkill, but after spending a small fortune on my unkown and unproven second hand engine and seeing some of the work that was done on it for the €2,200 labour bill, it hasn't instilled any confidence in me to use it. Therefore, when poor old Dan had rotten luck with his immaculate example and seeing as he was moving away from Zed ownership, the horror stories that were going around about failing injectors etc. I decided it was time for a clean sheet, so purchased Dan's brand new Tomei 740cc injectors, I then had a good think about it and seeing as though Dan's car dyno'd at a very healthy 405 Bhp (with his regular injectors being the limiting factor) We had a good chat and I've purchased his whole engine setup, Thanks for your help, generosity and patience Dan, it's truly appreciated.

The plan now is to take everything I have for the Zed and do what I should have done in February of this year..... Save up for a ferry crossing for a jeep and car transporter and bring the whole bloody lot to Jimmer@ Powerzed. Jimmer has been on this forum as long as I have and in those 10-11 years there hasn't been any negative feedback that I know of regarding his work or commitment to our Zed Community.

So the plan now is to try and raise enough cash to get the car sorted once and for all (mechanically anyways) over the next 5-6 months, so that I can finally enjoy driving it.

We'll have to see how i get on:yes:

Loving your plan Richie and getting the cash together is never easy for jobs like this but at least you will know its done right. When you get this baby on the road I will take a trip down to see you mate.

Thanks bud, after all I've been through with this car, all the expensive parts bought, the new engine and transmission looms, upgraded turbo's, manifolds, exhausts etc. I figure it's best to bite the bullet and at least put it together properly, been chatting to Jimmer and the chap won't put you wrong.

Oh and yesterday i got these....

Glad to hear Dan's car will live on, at least a part of it. Definitely a good move on your part Rich, keep us posted.

I'll have the heart of Dan's car powering mine, so it'll live on, hopefully I can do him proud:thumbup1:

You might want to replace your clutch pedal with one of these though. ;)

:scared: You've lost me mate:confused1: Maybe I'm just burnt out at the min:yes:

What's the advantage of the segmented flywheel. Surely it would just wear out the clutch quicker?

This afternoon I got these little gems

IMG_4646.jpg

When you have a min, can you take a photo of the other side? SZ improved the starter ring gear to flywheel mounting

and I would like to see what they did.

I did wonder who bought the 740cc injectors, tempted as I was...

Project 1547 - Out of the Blue

She's so fine, there's no tellin' where the money went - Simply irresistible.

Thanks, sounds interesting but is warping flywheels a big problem? or only for a problem intense track or drag use? I can't imagine a traditional flywheel warping under normal conditions otherwise they would all be segmented.

If you slip the clutch (for whatever reason) - then the problem can occur with lightweight aluminium flywheels and their one piece steel facings.

The implication is that it's going to be like an on off switch I believe, as apposed to your bell housing illuminating like the landing light.

Been away for a while, what with going back to work etc.

Went down to the garage today and removed my near new Exedy stage 1 organic clutch and RPS segmented flywheel. (300 miles max)

Andrew, here's a pic of the rear of both flywheels buddy

Spent the last week concentrating on tidying up my daily driver, got a great deal on a set of 5 brand new Navara alloys and near new BF Goodrich All-Terrains, these are in a much more chunky size (265/70/17) which is what I wanted but couldn't afford, for a total bargain of €400  (was going to change just the front tyres for €330) He was suing Nissan due to a rotted chassis on his 06 Navara, so told me if I needed anything else to work away and help myself. Switched out my broken Auto Climate Control blower module (€140ish), and my boring black plastic interior handle that I'd used to replace my broken chrome one. I've both front wings dented/bashed by the previous lady owner and commented on how his also had dings and dents. He then told me that he'd gotten his replacement worn tyres and wheels off a Pathfinder at his friends breaker yard down the road, He told me that it was black and in great condition body wise, I called down and mentioned his name to the owner of the breakers, who then told me to have a look and then "make a deal" with him. Heal of the hunt... Walked away with two perfect matching front wings, 4 factory mudflaps, factory rubber boot mat (€60) and the expensive Nissan option of a rear spoiler (close to €450 painted + fitted). Got the lot for €70:punk:.

Did a search on various sites for the rear parcel shelf as the Pathie felt like a van with the boot exposed, Seen one on an Irish "Buy & Sell" site for €60, offered €30, he let it go for €40, later I looked at EBay (to make sure I wasn't being ripped off) it had two for sale, €183 & €210 plus shipping from the UK:scared:. So another bargain. Found a 2 month old Pioneer App Radio with €90 worth of leads and accessories (Steering control harness / HDMI / Lightning cable) on another Irish site 20 mins North of Dublin and as I was already in Dublin Christmas shopping made a cheeky offer, got it for €290:thumbup: Told Jo that it can be my Christmas pressie:thumbup1:. It will also fit both the Zed and the Pathie:thumbup:

Planned on doing the wings and spoiler today but it's so wet over here.

Anyway here's a before and after (so far)

After

IMG_4727.jpg

Doesn't look like much, but she's sitting nearly 2" higher on the bigger tyres, makes it look much more purposeful. The parcel shelf makes it feel more refined than just having a gaping, open space. She's to get a further 2" lift (shipped) when they arrive. Stereo looks near factory with fit etc. Getting the rear reversing camera fitted tomorrow for peace of mind when reversing the beast.
