V8 - should I or should I not........??

.....I'm more than happy with my daily driver; the 350 v6 is more than quick enough for most situations. But I do still get that hankering for a v8 sometimes - and this seems a good buy at 18 months old, considering the new cost. I'm not keen on having another black car though, but it sure is tempting.....

I should really stop myself from looking, I reckon.......

I have something to say............ It's better to burn out than to fade away..... :tt2:

I love the sound of a V8 and with the MB technology will be a monster, go with your heart mate :thumbup1:

I bought an S55K AMG a few months back. Best car I've ever had! And absolutely blisteringly quick!! Got a gps tracked 0-60 in 3.9 seconds recently and (although not proven yet) the top speed has gotta be up near the 200 mark. The M113k engine is incredible! Uprate the supercharger pulley, get it mapped and it's an absolute monster. Buy one!

Oh and the sound..... Best sound V8 you'll ever find.

Do it rich, life is short. Buy and enjoy the big lumps while they are still legal, it won't last forever.

Do it, that v8 sound puts a smile on your face every time you press the pedal!!

Do it! However I favour these in V8 flavour!

I used to work at Mercedes when those first came out, shocking build quality in the past 15 years or so. Those SL55's used to set fire to themselves once the manifolds were hot enough, since the hydraulic lines for the active body control ran too close to them. There was a recall for it, and the fix was to use a crowbar to pry them further away.

This has the later M175 NA engine - but still good for 420bhp and 0-62 in 4.6

If you can live with the petrol consumption then do it mate

That and the AMG running cost premium over the "normal" 350 Gaz....:sweatdrop: Although the fuel consumption is not so bad for a big v8; apparently half the cylinders shut down when pootling around in eco mode (he says, trying to justify it.... ) World's most efficient v8, allegedly - but that's like being the cleverest person in the asylum!!

Still the purchase price looks like a potential bargain. Whilst mine was in MB for a service today, I was looking at the brand new AMG55 they had in - and with pretty much the same options as the one I posted above, it weighed in at over £60k!!! So £37k for 18 months and under 6000 miles under its belt doesn't look bad......

:thumbup1::thumbup1: you know my answer Richard. A member on this forum (i wont say who) took me out in his V12 bi-turbo Merc, the power on tap was just insane..60-100 felt like a couple of seconds i kid you not:eek:

Was that a CL65? I have a real soft spot for those. I like the models from about 06/07. Really nice looking cars.

So long as you don't mind the hit the car's value will be in another 18 months.

You'd think that mate - but after a year or so, the AMG55 values seem to stabilise.....

....Another look on MB's website revealed that 2012/62 plate examples are running in at £34,995. So 0-18 months sees a drop from £60k to £37k - then 18-36 months from £37k to £35k..... Doesn't make sense; but there's no point in buying an older one when there's only 2k price difference??!!

Having spoken to a friend in the trade, residuals for the big engine R172 SLKs (with good spec) are strong - once the first year's depreciation is out of the way. That said, there is a facelift and name change due early next year. So I could just keep mine another year and buy a 6 month old "new version" of the 350 next autumn.
