Hello everyone, I'm a new member here eagerly waiting to pick up my first Zed.

I drive a bmw E92 330d at the moment as a daily and fancied one of the old 90s japanese performance cars, I've always been real fan of the old 90's design.

Put a deposit for Martins car, great guy and was very thorough, told me everything that was wrong with the car, pleasant and honest chap. It's a LWB TT Auto.

Before I went for the zed I was also looking at RX7s and R32 GTR's, however didn't really manage to find any good condition cars worthy to be a project - rusty, damaged and abused, better conditions were well out of budget and were more of a ''buy and play''

As a project car I'm interested to hear whether if there are any local experienced members around the areas of lancashire and yorkshire? I'd like to do a belt change and service, and I'm happy and willing to pay an experienced forum member to do it if they have the time, I'll benefit from the owners experience and learn more about this car faster, someone who loves talking about it would be ideal

Engine and running will be my main focus when I get it, so with this being a G reg, and likely that this is its original engine with it being an early car, I've read they have problems with warping valves for really early cars, this being one of them. Are there any other problems I should be looking for at this age? Any sources for engine parts that people know on here?

I'm in two mindsets for the engine, spend money to get it up to scratch or get a conversion, manual transmission is a must for me, the BMW is already an Auto and it does an excellent job of it. I have two options I'm keen to take, 1 is an SR20 engine, and the other is an RB26.

I'm fine with either engine, but if anyone has done a conversion, please feel free to share, all comments and opinions are welcome. I'm looking to build something that can gain 300+bhp be driven hard, reliable, lighter in weight and easier to maintain.

cosmetics will probably be the last thing, I'm not interested in any bodykits or things like that, just some nice wheels, nice drop (i think this car has coilys not sure which) spec 99 lights and full respray.

I can probably dump around 1k into this a month obviously there is a limit to how far I'm prepared to go! so fire away and share your ownership experience, I'd love to know more about this car. Also this is my first turbo petrol car, so I've still to learn about all the boost stuff.

based in salford at the moment, so not too far from you M60 and M62. Can't wait to meet some peeps, its been awhile since I've been involved within a forum community of enthusiasts and judging by what Martin has already told me, they're some really cool guys on here which is good to hear!

I'm not far from you in littleborough so I'm sure we can sort out a meet up pretty soon mate. I've got 2 zed's a 93 tt manual in pearl white and a 98 version R in midnight purple also a tt manual car.

Awesome Version R, I can't wait to it! I'll probably have a whole host of questions about the zed and it's engine in particular, manual tranny conversion is an absolute must for me and what I want to do with the car, I pick it up Wednesday hopefully, so we can meet whenever you're free

Welcome and good luck with the project!

As for the engine choices, a 4 cylinder in a Z32 is my idea of a downgrade. Sure, they're lighter and you can get a lot of power out of them, but you may as well just get an S14. They don't sound all that great either. I don't understand this idea really.

RB26DETT is the one I'd go for out of those two without a shadow of a doubt.

Personally for me, you have a TT already, I'd say use that. They sound better than both options you're considering and can be made to develop plenty of power. I'd honestly just do a manual conversion on it.

I think the only engines I'd personally look at fitting to a Z32 (and it would be a 'money no problem' swap) would be a VR38DETT or a a heavily modified (and probably turbocharged) VK56.

Either way, good luck with it all. :)

There are a few sr20 engined Zebs about. However you get more HP and torque stock from a VG30dett, chip and boost increase on a VG will see you over what most SR boys churn out with a much longer mod list. Infact it might surprise you but the VG makes more power than the RB mod for mod. Not to mention the RB suffers its own issues.

To switch out the VG on a zed requires something thought out. We all know packing is a restraint and that's the main advantage of an RB engined zed. You either swap to something cheaper to extract power from like the RB of JZ blocks or you go out and fit something that provides gobs of power from the off in a naturally aprisrated form such as an LS motor.

I'm all for swaps, but a swap is rarely easy or cheap, in fact normally the opposite. I'm not saying the VG is king of engines, there's definitely better, however you need a damn good reason to change it. Especially when your removing a motor than makes 300hp stock and has had people run over 700hp on stock internals.

Hi Apollo, welcome to the club and it sounds like some exciting times and threads are ahead.

I think a 2.0 would be a bit flat in a lwb targa zed. If I were you I would do the manual swap first. Have a drive of the car, find it's strengths and weaknesses, what you like and what you don't then have another think about the next step.

At that point you will have a 300hp manual car. The money it would take to get a second hand stock RB26 into a zed would have your car absolutely sorted, and/or your VG30DETT rebuilt.

I imagine (please check) a manual zed box would go onto an RB26 anyway, or certainly could be made to. So start there, buy some tail lights, your favourite alloys and drive it for a bit :thumbup1: :clover:

My white zed has had a manual conversion so can talk to you about that no problem, as said above the TT zed engine can easily be tuned to return respectable BHP numbers for fairly little outlay so id look at that route first before considering a power unit swap.

Im certainly happy with the 350 ish BHP that mine are putting out.

Thanks for the replies guys, unfortunately I won't be able to go ahead with the ZED, my BMW is in for some unexpected costly repairs after its service yesterday, which is so frustrating, it drove fine but apparently the issues with the BM needs to be fixed, error codes told them a swirl flap failure and also turbo problems. I was really looking forward to tomorrow!! argh!!!

Just Spoken to Joe (Apollo) and I am properly gutted for him.

Really nice guy and I hope he sticks around and gets his Zed eventually

Sorry to hear that mate.....

.....But welcome to the club; and hope to hear from you in the future...:clover:

I have something to say............ It's better to burn out than to fade away..... :tt2:
