Stripping and rebuilding throttle housings and linkage - any useful tips?

I have a spare set that I am going to recondition as I'm rebuilding all the visual aspects of the top half of my engine, so with that comes freshly powder coated rocker covers, re-plated springs and throttle mech and also powder coated throttle housings to match.

 

I've stripped most of one of the throttles down and will renew the 3 or 4 plastic bushings/bearings and can't unscrew the screws holding the butterfly to the spindle. In addition, once that's removed, should the spindle just slide out? I've removed everything else around it. If that's the case and you're left with 2 bearings, what did people do who've had theirs powder coated do with those? Leave them in situ?

 

Finally, I am looking to shave the bottom of the throttle housings and in so doing, totally delete all of the cooling galleries - has anyone done this?

I stripped mine down earlier this year but didn't powder coat them

 

The throttle screws are a complete pain. Make sure the driver you are using is a very good fit, I recommend you use one mounted in a ratchet. I used some localised heat from a lighter to help them out. Make sure you apply a lot of downwards pressure to stop it slipping as once it starts its almost impossible to remove.

I seem to remember the shafts tap out one way and will take one of the bearings out with it, then tap that off the shaft and use the shaft to remove the other.

A few things to note. Make sure the throttle is centred correctly when reinstalling- you can do this by removing the throttle stop screw (measure its position with a calipers before removing) and using the bore of the throttle (shut tight) to centre while doing up the screws- use loctite.

Also, most of my spring spacers fell apart, I put it back together best I could but I now have a kit from z1 to replace them.

 

I didn't skim material off for the water passage but I did cut them off flush which looks neat

Replacing all the screws etc really finishes them off nicely

Wondering whether I can risk a low-bake oven on the throttle housings without having to remove the spindle and butterfly. I'd imagine it should be ok....low bake can be achieved as low as 130-150 degrees.

The butterfly screws are pressed once fitted when new, so they or the butterfly can never become loose and get drawn into the cylinders. just remember to use a thread locking fluid when refitting if you do remove these.
