You all have seen the crash by now and its another very sad day as the death toll rises. I'm not sure how many Hawker Hunter jets there are but I watched one last year at Newcastle Festival of flight and it is so nice to watch these old fighters in flight. I hope they dont ground them or restrict them to just a fly pass. RIP to all involved and my condolences to family and friends.

I know it's partly the illusion of hindsight, however as soon as that plane got about half way round I was worrying about it making a full loop. The loop just didn't seem tight enough for altitude. Apparently he was a very experienced pilot, I'm sure he knew what he was doing. It just doesn't look right from the out though does it. It's not far from my office this, tragic accident.

I think two years ago now, maybe longer. One of the ted arrows crashed and died at the Bournemouth air festival which was held this weekend as well.

I am no expert but it looked to me the jet was down on power or the pilot blacked out for a few seconds. I hope he pulls through but I doubt if he will remember anything.

Absolutely shocking footage and videos. It does make you wonder what it will lead to for Uk airshows. If the pilot does pull through it must be awful to know you've killed at least 12 people and destroyed the life of hundreds :(

It was a sad occasion indeed...

But generally these events do not tend to end in such a tragic way. My thoughts are with those who lost loved ones - and whilst safety must always remain the priority - I sincerely hope this does not mean the end to our (otherwise) great air shows...

I have something to say............ It's better to burn out than to fade away..... :tt2:

I heard today that the aivation authorities are going to be banning display stunts etc for vintage jets, in an attempt to make things safer...so looks like this is going to affect things.

Yep the Hunter's are grounded and just fly pasts for the older planes.

That seems a knee jerk to me! It was probably G-LOC or something. I doubt it was a mechanical failure.

Translation for us non-RAF folk..?

Unfortunately knee jerk is how we produce law in this country these days, it's up to all those involved to prove innocence while blame and liability are looked at. Even if facts arrive to discount personal liability and discredit the knee jerk law introduced, the law will continue to exist...

A friend and I were on the way back from Suffolk with a Celica full of goodies from a scrap yard when it flew over us on the way to Shoreham, then about 40 mins later both our phones got the news flash. Spooky. Having seen the video it does look to me (bear in mind, im no expert) like at the top of the loop the plane struggles (whether he lost too much speed, lost lift or power) and looses altitude, so much so that he cant pull up in time. I also feel (as bad as it was) hitting the middle of the A27 was a 1 in 1,000,00 chance and to start banning airshows and planes is wrong. Its terrible that people died, but not one spectator has died at an airshow since 1952 (farnborough show), thats 63 years with no spectator deaths (pilots have died in that time unfortunately), showing that the current rules and regulations for airshow flying are working.

Whilst I don't like to speculate, there are photos of it shortly before it crashed showing what appears to be fluid escaping. Potentially a hydraulic failure - I am sure it won't be long before the AAIB have discovered what happened. Having said that, military aircraft are excempt from carrying black box and voice data recorders and given that this is a historic aircraft, it isn't going to give much away I don't think. Let's hope the pilot makes a full recovery.

Very sad news. I do go to air shows myself and absolutely love them.

Sorry, I don't agree with that. Whilst it is an almost improbable incident, the AAIB and air show officials have to be seen to be doing something for the good of the public in (terms of safey) and the media (in terms of actually doing something about it). Resting on your laurels suggesting it won't happen again is a poor position to be in. The aviation industry is very tightly regulated and rightly so despite its safety record.

They're not banning air shows or planes. They've temporarily grounded the Hunter fleet (as with any commercial aircraft that's suffered catastrophic failure - they often given temporary grounding), they've put a ban on high power acrobatics on vintage aircraft only. That could be lifted pending the outcome. You can't simply carry on as if nothing's happened.

Just my 2 penneth. :)

Listening to the news this morning it was said that the Red Arrows refused to fly at Shoreham because there was no safe fall out zone. That sounds bad for future shows there maybe they can move it more towards the sea line.

That's because they lost an aircraft to a similar crash back in 2011. No one on the ground lost their lives as the pilot was able to guide the falling plane away from houses - but the scenario was very much the same.

Yup - what Steve said....

People jump on every passing band-wagon; and the authorities just capitulate and pass laws, so as to be seen to be doing something.

I have something to say............ It's better to burn out than to fade away..... :tt2:
