Two new rear tyres being fitted today. (advisory on MOT) rear tyres cracking!

Featured Replies

Are you required to replace them? We'll get an advisory too if the rubber is weakened due to age, but they can't fail the car for it.

Be careful with old tires, this happened to me last weekend on a track event:

Had to limp home with the spare tire, not funny...

Haha.............how bad then does a tire have to be before your tester issues a fail and not just an advisory !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

EDIT: I realize now this wasn't the one in the test .

looks like a re mould lol

Nice to see you on here Dave:thumbup::tt2:

Actually they're goodyear eagle F1 tyres, not re-moulds or anything. Just plain old, I think we read the dot code as 519 which would mean they're over 15 years old. So that probably explained the crappy handling, the wild understeer when pushed in corners and the insanely fast loss of grip as i tried to do a powerslide, donut and similar but only ended up with my arse facing the wrong direction...

Anyways, wasn't my intention to thread jack, just give you all a heads up

Dot code doesn't determine date.

The sidewall will be marked something like 4408 usually stamped in a circle on its own, it means week 44 of 2008.

A tyre can be cracked all over, providing none are deep enough to reach ply or cords we can only advise and pass.

And an MOT in no way determines the road worthiness of a vehicle, that lies with the driver and or operator. It's nice to see the owner of a vehicle taking notice of an advisory and taking action, most don't

Good info on year Chris.

Just look at my old tyre its marked 4310 so nearly five years old!

My new rears are marked 0215!

Your right my Z did not fail on tyres.

My fronts are Bridgestones marked 3307!

Rears are Nankang sports.

If they're pre-2000 then date code is often 3 digits. So my tyre stamped 519 is produced in week 51 year 1999

This is the problem when you don't do many miles, the tyres will still rot, it's rubber. Without the thread depth reducing many people just assume the tyre is in good condition. This is an issue with part worns particularly. Thread depth is obvious but what else has happened, is the tyre 10 years old? Did it come into contact with a chemical when the donnor of that tyre probably crashed... That's not to say part worns are evil, merely to point out there's more to consider with a tyre than just it's brand and thread depth.

It's great tyres have a production date, maybe a best before or use by date wouldn't be a stupid incorporation or would that lead to people running bald tyres declaring "there in date..." Equally I suppose it's difficult to say it will degrade at this rate, too many environmental factors maybe.
