Well, as my previous PTU didn't go wrong and to be honest, they don't fail as much as you'd be led to believe, I'm going back to a series 1 PTU until I order a brand new loom from wiring specialities.

The S2 PTU and harness are damn ugly. I had thought about chopping up the sub-harness, but since there are still quite a few people still rocking an S1 PTU, I'm just going to stick mine back on there and have nice tidy wiring for a while!

Who else is still using their S1 PTU?

Featured Replies

I had mine changed to the S2 unit for no other reason than to "future-proof" things, and it was hard-wired in as well so there's no unsightly adaptor harness :thumbup1:

Not only is the adaptor loom "ugly" it introduces a whole new set of connectors to go green/corroded!

My spare car still has a S1 on it. My track car has ser2 with a later loom.

You could always move the PTU under the nose so it's no longer visible to be ugly. However as Pete points out it's more connections to cause issues. I also have a series 1, currently it works. If it stops il replace it with another undesirable cheap series 1.

Still running S1 after 133,000 miles.

No problems to date.

Touch wood.

I think they may be vulnerable if they over heat due to the viscous fan failing.

Just a theory mind.

Heat could be a big issue as the bay gets very hot. After a long drive (if I can)I open the bonnet to let all that heat out.

My S1 PTU died a death years ago. Replaced it with an R33 GTR PTU I had lying around and it's been fine ever since. Relocated under the nose panel.

S1 for me 2 , 100K miles okay so far. just out of interest what happens when a ptu goes wrong, is it an instant thing or gradual over time. AND when it does go, what are the symptoms?

No ugly harness with the S2 PTU I have fitted. You going to carry a spare S1 in case of failure in the

middle of nowhere?

I'll carry the spare S2 that I have for that!

I think it is vibration that kills them, given that it's a physical wire that becomes detached inside.

i've still got my s1 ptu, sat on the shelf in the garage i've got the s2 on the car, glad i changed it to be fair the car ran a whole lot better after i fitted the s2

Si- just for your reference the wiring specialist harness is a good bit of kit there is one thing to note though. It comes fitted with multiple connectors for some of the sensors eg cas, air con and I think 1 more. These either look ugly or you can cut them off and tape up the loom.

I did the latter including a load of other connections for the aivs egr and prcv as I did a wiring tuck at the same time. End results are great now though as there are almost no visible wires and the sub loom for the injectors is a great idea.

As mentioned above, the loom comes fitted for a later spec cas and the older style. If you can get hold of one they are a little neater and the connector is better, I was not able to get one in time but I know you have contacts in the U.S.

Just some food for thought

So thats what the fault is when you open them up Andy. Have you ever fixed any PTU's?

Yeah, a couple, mixed success, they are filled with a clear silicon type goo which I guess is mainly to dampen vibration and perhaps to even out temperature differentials between the parts. There is a web page out there somewhere explaining what to do. Used to be on my site (now pretty dead), but either the Aus Tech site or Google will probably find it these days.

Found the Aus Tech site and nice to see inside the PTU.http://tech.aus300zx.com/pturepair/pturepair.htm

So what was your web site on these Andy?

It was just linked from my site.

Nothing wrong with the S1 PTU.....

.....Until it goes wrong....

Just copy Andrew's installation Si; then your engine bay can look good AND you'll still be safe in the knowledge that you should not suffer PTU failure, when you least expect it:wink:

I have something to say............ It's better to burn out than to fade away..... :tt2:

I have had both a S1 and S2 PTU fail.

An S1 on my first Z, the S2 PTU on my current Z.

I am now running a brand new S2 PTU and also a WS RHD EFI loom from the US and can confirm they are a good bit of kit, but they only cater for the S2 PTU so no ugly conversion harness to accommodate.
