There used to be a guy who had a few times, don't think he's active anymore. It's defiantly possible, question is, is it easier? Don't forget, access is only half the problem, the combination of that and rusty seized bolts brings a whole new dimension. I've eyed the job up before and I recon the drivers side, contray to first glance is likely easier. Because you can access all four manifold to turbo bolts quite nicely. The passenger side one of the rear two is a shit bag with the engine out let alone in situee, so most probably would demand the manifold to come out with it.

The reward of pulling your engine is higher than most would assume. Because it allows you to solve half à dozen other issues you didn't even see before and remove previous owners tools etc that are in the engine  hasn't hour gearbox got time off soon anyway? In which case that's a third of the work already done....

I haven't, wouldn't and couldn't!, but I have definitely read on this forum that it can be done with the engine in.

By all accounts it is easier to remove the engine.

It is possible with engine in but a pain in the ass..Pull engine and do it properly as there is always more rectifications needed/noticed when engine is out:)

this is something i do often .. not an easy job .. but beats taking the engine out

Ime very surprised at you saying this Mark...The motor can be lifted so easy on these cars once you,ve broke your virginity doing one. Iff the tubs have not been off and you tackle it in situ then the time it takes to even straighten the tangs on the locking plate washers holding the tubs on is epic alone:whistling:

hmmm would it be a job that while the box is out would that make it any more easy to do ?

It's actually ok to do I've done a few with engine in, the manual actually says to do it with engine in,

I found drivers side easier, remove the master cylinder and steering column which gives you some room,

Passanger side I have no aircon pump, and I usually undo bolts so I can clock the turbo which gives room to manifold bolts and take the lot off in one,

I think d2 use to do them with engine in and they lowered subframe,

I also find its ok saying remove it all if you have plenty of money to spend on other bits, but pulling engine usally disturbs everything like looms which end up broken which if engine was left alone would have been ok,

I mean you have to pull gearbox or lift it out in one, autos can normally leave box where it is on a jack so no need to touch underneath, you could say box is off so pointless putting old clutch in, change rear seal, etc etc before you know it there's hours more work and ££££ in labour and you only had a leaky turbo lol ..

especially if your paying labour to a garage it is close though in labour on autodata it's 9.2hrs to remove engine and its 11hrs to replace both turbos with engine in but the labour to remove turbo's once engine is out plus every thing else that breaks or needs replacing would push that bill up...

but if it's really rusty and bolts won't undo it's game over and would need engine to be removed,
