Hi guys, thought I'd post up before I start investigating tomorrow.

Hit a huge old pothole and bottomed out, car is running very rough, hunting idle, running rich and spewing black smoke under acceleration.

Got no EML, I have a laptop and consult to plug in if that helps? I have a theory its an o2 sensor but not 100%

Have a video of it here, 1993 UK TT.

Is it me or is there no boost when revving??

Has an intercooler hose come off or damage to hose and unmetered air entering system??

Also no oil pressure.....?

Check intercooler pipes on side that bottomed out with pothole.....??

Oil gauge is disconnected as I have an aftermarket, oil pressure is decent.

I've got all weekend to diagnose it, need to source new alloy though as it's cracked :(

Was too cold/dark to look properly, your right though it's not boosting great.

Sad to read this, James... not the start to Zed ownership that anyone wants! :(

I know, I'm not too pleased. However it's probably for the best, it's certainly a very lively car in the wet and I'm going to take it off the road for a bit, tidy her up and probably get her out when the weathers better. Still got the celica to drive about in.

I'd go with Veilside's suggestion, sounds very feasible since you've bottomed out. Its possible you've damage a hose, pipe or even an intercooler.

The resultant boost/vacuum leak will make the car run like crap.

Don't forget to get pictures of pothole and damage to the car...... Use a fag packet on its side in the pothole to show the depth in a picture and give perspective..... Councils have insurance for just this type of thing....!

I managed to get 2 wheels paid for by council as did the same thing in 2002...... they will try to get out of it, but just give them bills for all the damage...... They won't pay for a full set of 4 wheels only damaged ones.....

You won't build positive boost in neutral, the engine mustunder load to do this. Is that the car pulsing the idle like that or you? It is possible you've created a boost leaan inspection for any obvious, this allow metered air to escape and cause the black and rough running. It's worth checking connections for things like the air idle valve near the battery and the ECU coolant temp sensor. Sounds like you gave herca good jolt.

When I say pothole, I suppose meteor crater would be the correct term.

The car was pulsing the idle like that itself, I've had it on the celica and it was the exhaust o2 sensor. It's probably air related as a few of you have said, there's just a fair few sensors and pipes on this big ol engine which I'm not familiar with yet so I guess the learning begins now.

As soon as she's running right again I'll need two new tyres and an alloy, drivers side sill has cracked on the weld join where it was replaced and the door doesn't shut.

Not the best start to my zed ownership but at least it's fixable and I didn't crash!

Well I need some low entry car ramps for Christmas as she's too low for my ramps and my low profile jack!

Didn't think she was that low, as she struggled to get on the tow truck yesterday should of been a sign for me.

Welcome to the eternal z problem, getting them off the floor. Drive it up on some bricks or 2x4, you will then be able to get a kick under there.

Split intercooler is the problem!

Now go for a front mount or uprate the sides?

I'll have a pair of standard ones coming off mine soon(ish) if they'll help you out at all...?

Did you crack the plastic end tank? I thought it was going to be the rubber hose down there but that makes perfect sense. If I were you id replace it with a second hand stock for now give you some space and time to work out what you want. FMIC vs SMIC is a classic debate and there's more options and cheaper solutions than first present themselves.

The bracket holding the intercooler snapped and punctured the plastic bit then it's rattled about and wrecked itself.

I'm thinking along the lines of whilst I have it apart upgrade it and go from there, there's quite a few bodge jobs which I have to sort out aswell, mainly wiring.

I do like the look of the 99 spec with a front mount, but as said there's loads of different opinions as to what's 'best'

Thanks Mondo I'll bear your standards ones in mind too just in case.

As she'll probably be off the road for a bit now as I'm going to try and sort her out good and proper

If Mondo's aren't available in time I've got a pair you can have too and the plastic tunnels for them too. Good luck with your rebuilding just be thorough.

Wasn't someone selling some pace ones? Not sure how much they are but from memory I think mine were expensive

I've managed to bodge the intercooler, waiting for the resin to dry before I try it. Not that I'll use it on the road, just to see if she runs nicely so I can drive her onto some ramps when they arrive.

The godspeed fmic looks decent, anyone using one?

The bumper is certainly fiddly to get off too :p

I've got a pair of Godspeed SMICs waiting to be fitted, but I've no idea what their front mount is like.
