Hi Guys,

MOT has gone through today, and failed only on 2 rear tyres, no advisories wohoo!

What do people think about these winter tyres?... They seem pretty good value compared to my local tyre shop who was asking £220 for some avons...

Best regards,

William.

can't seem to type properly today

I have Avon somethings winter tyres on my Leon; they're in the garage at the moment. I'll likely get them fitted next month, they're damn good! I just can't remember the model name! My regular tyres are Avon also.

I've never found an (budget) anonymous named tyre that's worth putting your life at risk!...let alone in winter conditions.

By all means find a cheap price, but not a cheap brand!

I have found Black circles very good for tyre pricing, you buy online and get them fitted at a local outlet. Try this. http://www.blackcircles.com/tyres/winter-tyres

I get what you are saying about cheap brands - I don't want budget tyres from the local garage. These ones seem to be more expensive than the mid range brands on other sites, seems like a good deal, but not very clued up on my tyres.

'Ditchfinders'?

Nothing wrong with Avons. They're not quite the premium tyre they used to be, but they're still pretty good and at the top end of the 'intermediate' range. I ran Bridgestone on it for a while and didn't notice any difference, I do drive it quite hard too.

Unless you're going to have a set for winter and then change in the spring and back again in the winter, just get a good ordinary set. I've used Avon ZV5s on both my NA Autos (stock) and very happy with them for everyday grip and longevity. Current set (just coming up for change) 33,000 miles on the front and 26,000 miles on the rear - still got 2 - 4mm tread left. Available in stock 225 / 40 R16s for around £75 - £80 each. Guess what I'm buying for my next set?

Toyo R888? :p

I don't think it's honestly worth it, there's only about a week of weather bad enough to worry about them in this country. A good quality set of normal tyres will get you through most things, if it's too bad ft normal tyres the roads are so congested it's not worth leaving home.

It is worth it IMO, they're better in wet weather conditions too.

Thats what I was thinking - It would be nice to have a bit more grip in the wet as I am using it as my daily now!.. Hopefully these would give that, I don't intend to drive in the snow though!

Not all sizes are catered for if you're fitting them to your Z. Just double check. :)

And they sing "you spin me right round baby right round like a record baby, right round, round round" Lol!

Steady now! It has been noticable as the tires have worn low that they seem to catch you unaware a bit more. Only ever had one close call when I didn't expect it to go.. the rest of the time it is always pre-empted.

Well I think those will fit my wheels, I took it to the tyre shop today and they said 245/45/17 will do it as they are volk challenge f-zero alloys... fingers crossed :s

Budget tyres are budget for a reason.

I recall seeing a programme on this a while ago and while there is often no discernible difference in the dry in braking distance, the results in the wet were staggeringly different and quite alarming. It suggested there is no standard test required for performance in the wet ( not sure if this is correct or not). I put a set of budget tyres on my Z and it's fine in the dry and I don't use it in winter or the wet, but on the odd occasion I have got caught in the rain it's horrid to drive.

However, they have been on the car 7 years ( you can see how little mileage my Z gets!) and are finally in need of changing. I wont be putting budget ones on again!

I have Falken FK452 on my Z. I don't think they make that style anymore. They've been on my Z for about 5 years! Haha

No they now make fk453s I believe. I've got 452's on the front of mine as well. I don't think the 453 received as greater press.

Well, The tyres I have bought from that link are on and the grip in the wet/damp is amazing!! really pleased with them. Such a difference from the old Avons or whatever they were...
