I know there are loads of threads on speedo conversions, but that's partly my problem. See im dyslex and i want to check that i haven't got the various ways mixed up.

I have a jdm tt i also have a spare uk tt Insturment cluster. Can i just put the uk speedo (not just the face) in my jdm cluster? Will that convert it to mph?

Failing that could i put the jdm odo/rev counter in the jdm clust to achieve the same??

Any clarification would be greatly appreciated :-)

Depending on the series/age of your zed you can place a UK speedo complete and will read in MPH and remove the 112mph bong/ limit, Using a UK set of clocks is always a preferable mod to the convertor if your zed is pre 94

Replacing the odometer alone will make no difference as the resistor is on the speedo board itself.

Excellent :-)

Mines a 91 so all good there.

Thanks for clearing that up for me.

I also just spotted a mistake in my post. I meant to say putting the jdm odo/rev counter in the UK cluster. Only to keep the mileage for my car correct.

You can change the mileage on your own odomater, but i cant tell you how to do that on open forum lol

Hi Lee,

I have Jap import & converted KPH to MPH

U need a converter & Jef TT explains how 16 April 2014,

Here's mine!

This changes your readings to mph & stops the bling!

Just photo the reading & I got mine on MOT same time.

Hope this helps

Just an update on this.

I have fitted the uk speedo into the jdm cluster now.

Unfortunately it doesn't work :-/ Atleast not properly. At 1st it wasn't reading anything then it thought i was doing 180mph :-o Then it slowed to 140mph. This was whilst i was on a dual carriageway doing the same as the other car's. Anyone know what is going on with it and is it fixable??

Lee

not sure if you're aware but there are two types of cluster, Series 1 & 2 you can't use a different type to the one on the car as the wires are different (unless you rewire) .. you can tell as the plugs on the back are vertical on one and then horizontal on the other.

  • Author

Thanks for that. However both clusters i have look the same. Both of them are the top one in your picture :-S

Lee

As I told you, Lee - I think your best bet is to resolder all the connections on the back of the UK speedo unit. It did exactly what you're describing when I got it and apparently sorting all the solder joints is the only remedy (other than getting another speedo unit.)

Why you complicate things?

Is it to change the odometer settings?

I'm no mechanic I just did what this forum said & I had no problems:)

Yeah thanks all. Hey Si i have to confess my memory is at times not great :-S and haf forgotten what you had said about the spare cluster.

Ta art,

I only did it as i had one, however i think I'll be doing with a converter now :-)

Lee

You will need to take the speedo board out of the cluster and no doubt you will see some dry solder joints, especially around the R10 resistor area, reheat and run fresh solder, it is a known issue.

  • 7 months later...

I can hear the groans already...but I have another speedo question!

I have a 1990 JDM TT with original clocks and a KPH to MPH converter....I want to change them with a UK spec set.....so far...so good.

I recently purchased (from ebay) what I thought was a set of series 1 UK spec ZED World silver clocks....I have removed the original clocks and want advice on where the converter is so that I can remove it....see picture below:

Are the two items in white squares supposed to be there...or are they to do with the converter? (excuse my ignorance here!)

Also...I am confused by the following....the original speedo does NOT have any additional wiring on the back....but the new ZedWorld speedo (which I thought was a UK set) does appear to have additional wiring that I guess is a converter! (Again please excuse my ignorance here)

Information/advice would be greatly appreciated!

Thanks

Gary

The top one is the chime that everyone disables as soon as they get a chance to!

Looking at your photos, the black faced original still looks to read in KMH? Is that right its hard to tell? If so then obviously it won't have had a convertor, the driver simply had to remember the clocks operate in KMH.

The white faced 'Zedworld' clocks are probably not a genuine UK cluster, but in fact a JDM cluster with aftermarket white dial faces only which happen to read in MPH, but the cluster being a JDM still needs the convertor that the picture shows to make it read right if you understand.

That's my thoughts anyway.

Genuine UK clocks are black faced.

....also the guy I bought the car from told me that it had had a replacement converter fitted not too long ago....but I don't know what I am looking for.

I wanted a set of UK clocks as a straight replacement to overcome the 'bouncing' needle and other associated issues....I'm thinking... is it worth putting the silver Zed World clocks in as I won't be changing anything really....will I?!

[sIGPIC][/sIGPIC] "Exaggeration is the enemy of credibility"

Thanks for the quick replies...so should I remove the two items in white boxes in the first picture?...and if so how?

The converter is the smaller one on the bottom right of your first picture. And as said, the zedworld cluster also has a converter hanging off it.

Don't know, someone in an earlier post said the chimes stop with a UK speedo anyway, and I've got a UK speedo so never had to look into it. I guess you could just unplug it, the chimes would come from that top box in the first picture.

OK...many thanks...re the chimes...just unplug it?

No, don't just unplug it because the sounder operates for other things as well, like lights on.

I have a saved PDF document that explains how to disable it. The original on line link is dead, I don't know if I can upload a PDF, but if you want a copy PM your email address and I'll send one, its not hard though.
