"You picked a fine time to leave me, Loose Wheel!" - Mondo's new Zed.

Yesterday saw me head down to Kent to pick up my new Shortie! :D I got on the motorway to come back home about 4pm.

At 9pm, I was safely tucked away... on the hard shoulder of the A1(M) near York with a grand total of 1 wheelnut holding my rear passenger wheel on!!! The other 4 studs decided to shear off while I was in the outside lane - there was an almighty bang, the back-end of the car went completely loose so I had no choice but to dive for the shoulder! :(

The recovery truck arrived at 11pm and I slowly edged my new tripod onto the flatbed, before we headed off back to mine.

Spoke to Mr F this morning and he's ordered me 10 new rear studs, so my new car is currently undrivable. Seems it had cheap slot-on spacers on the back, no spigot rings and the end result was 4 wheelstuds missing.

Gotta love Zeds, eh...?!

Helluva change, right?! :D

She's pushing more boost now as well, so the grin factor has multiplied considerably. Upgraded SMICs are fitted too, to help keep things nice and cool.

EGR and carbon canister are now gone, and a load of connections have been replaced so she's simply in much better shape than she was! :thumbup1:

As an added bonus, my new rear spats have been delivered in my absence today... and I can confirm that they definitely are the SWB type! :D

The service work was the priority, to be honest - cambelt, guides, tensioners... new thermostat and coolant... new fuel filter... replacement electrical connections and pipework... hardwired S2 PTU. I needed all that doing for peace of mind and to try and ensure that the motor stays healthy for as long as possible :)

All the shiny stuff and whatnot, that was all secondary but I decided I might as well get it done as I probably wouldn't have a better opportunity

Where did the strut braces come from?

I bought it off eBay last year. Got the towers shotblasted and primed, then sprayed them up here in the candy red to match the throttle cover and timing covers I did :)

That is an engine bay to be proud of Si, It was a solid and strong car before all that was done!

It's had a thorough checkover whilst it's been in Shrewsbury and apparently it is solid underneath - no areas of concern! :)

Getting there slowly, mate. At least I know the engine's in good shape now. Just need to keep the bloody thing clean now!

Did you get a complete cambelt tensioner Si or a new pulley for the tensioner?

Going to put an order in to Mike for a cambelt kit soon but unsure wither to get the full tensioner or just a new pulley for it. most likely get the full tensioner.

You doing the work yourself Gary? I just changed the pulleys as two were noisy and the third was leaking grease. It had had a belt change in recent years so after inspection I deemed it unnecessary to change the tensioner itself, but it would be your choice. This engine has been serviced to a budget. If the money is there it makes sense to change such a vital little component.

No Stephen I will be getting a mechanic to do it but I want to supply all the parts. I have a noisy pulley also so need it done soon.

In that case defiantly buy the lot. Better to have it and not need it, otherwise it will be sat there waiting for the part at the shop and no one likes that.

glad you got home alright si and your z is solid underneath as callum said. what's your next plans for the zed :)

New Hicas arms and balljoints as there's a little play in the nearside one. Continue to look at my interior and wish I could spare the time to do some more trimming in there!

Very clean Simon, good job. Now get that fan shroud refitted :)

Mine was knackered, Joel. And I cleverly forgot to pick a good one up from Lee's when I collected the car, so he's going to send one up with Hollings when he comes up to collect his revamped interior :thumbup1:

Langdon4x4 on eBay sells good ones for a very good price. The majority of traders, like conceptua, etc, sell the exact same part (most just buy them from this seller) but double the price claiming they're rare and hard to get hold of.

If your hicas is hydraulic, you need r32 bits. If it's new enough to be electronic hicas, the hicas arms are r33 ones instead.

I've just had to pop into town to pick up some dog food. It's lovely weather here today so yep, the roof was in the boot! :)

On my way home, I thought I'd stop off at Norton duck pond (a sort of scenic spot in Norton Village) and take 5 minutes to enjoy the surroundings...

...and take a quick phone picture of the Zed! :D Excuse the poor quality

Pick up some 'dog food' eh wink wink........scenic spot indeed, sounds very much like where couples go in their cars, 5 mins seems a bit on the topside for you though .
