"You picked a fine time to leave me, Loose Wheel!" - Mondo's new Zed.

Yesterday saw me head down to Kent to pick up my new Shortie! :D I got on the motorway to come back home about 4pm.

At 9pm, I was safely tucked away... on the hard shoulder of the A1(M) near York with a grand total of 1 wheelnut holding my rear passenger wheel on!!! The other 4 studs decided to shear off while I was in the outside lane - there was an almighty bang, the back-end of the car went completely loose so I had no choice but to dive for the shoulder! :(

The recovery truck arrived at 11pm and I slowly edged my new tripod onto the flatbed, before we headed off back to mine.

Spoke to Mr F this morning and he's ordered me 10 new rear studs, so my new car is currently undrivable. Seems it had cheap slot-on spacers on the back, no spigot rings and the end result was 4 wheelstuds missing.

Gotta love Zeds, eh...?!

Honestly? I think it looks fantastic, but I think I'd have gone for a charcoal leather on the outers rather than a red leather.

Just to add to this, here's an example as to why I didn't go for grey or black leather on the seats:

Don't get me wrong, they do look nice (and yes, I'm aware they're not the exact colour scheme that Si mentioned!) but they just wouldn't work in my car. Just a little bit too much going on for my own personal taste.

Not really an update as such, but just something nice that happened this afternoon :)

Sat at a junction and some guy in a new-looking Porsche 911 pulls up alongside and says "That's the most beautiful car I've seen in ages!"

Made me smile quite broadly, unsurprisingly! :thumbup1:

Today, she's had an oil and filter change and a damn good clean - she's now ready to head to that log cabin in Shropshire tomorrow! :thumbup1:

I've got a few new bits and bobs due to arrive in the next couple of weeks so, once they're all fitted, I'll post the obligatory pictures up! :)

Did you do the oil change yourself?

Of course :)

Well, we're back from Shrewsbury now after a well-earned break.

The Zed was faultless (as expected) and even went for a jaunt to Cardigan Bay in Wales on Wednesday. :) Good fun on some of the twisties with the roof off! Lots of admiring looks and "thumbs-ups" from pedestrians and other drivers during the week, which was nice

We dropped in to see Lee Dent on Monday and also Friday before we headed home and I got a proper opportunity to have a good look at the underside - all is well and nice and solid :thumbup1:

MOT due fairly soon so I have a couple of daft little jobs to do in readiness for that, like wiring the foglight up to a switch.

Other than that, it's all quiet on Mondo's Zed front at the moment. I'd like to find time to trim my own steering wheel before JAE, but it remains to be seen whether or not that actually happens...

Just come back from a mooch up the A1 to meet MasterCookieman and collect a spare rear subframe and diff, ready for refurbing :)

It all fits in the boot of a Shortie... kind of... now I just need to find someone here who'll help me get the damned thing out of the boot!!

  • Author

Got it all out of the boot on my own :) Had to completely dismantle the bloody thing in there though!

Tt subframe or na?

Another TT subframe, mate - gonna keep the Hicas and everything! :thumbup1:

MOT time!!

After a false start yesterday when the garage couldn't even get the Zed onto the ramps to start an inspection, I got booked in this morning somewhere else and she sailed through with only a couple of advisories!

Happy Mondo :thumbup1:

Well done that Z

Yep! I'm a happy man today!

Well, I know it didn't happen in time for JAE and that show season is now all but behind us, but... I finally got around to doing my own steering wheel today!!

As per usual, the rim's been thickened up somewhat during the retrimming process. The whole wheel looks and feels sooo much better and isn't spoiling the overall look of the cabin any more. Just wish I'd had chance to do it earlier this year!

That's actually very nice - I find the stock wheel so utterly dull, but that really is very good.

See, I really like the standard wheel - It could maybe be slightly smaller, but I think it's a really nice looking wheel. Even better now, of course... ;)
