Right, had to get a replacement engine to go in mine after it decided to eat piston rings on number 6 cylinder, new is ok, but i still need to sort the timing out after my last engine ate the timing light, it comes up to temp and holds its temp lovely, no knocking or strange noises going on and the compression results before i got it, where averaging 155 on each cylinder. its had a nice fresh oil change with brand new oil filter

Now the smoking issue, when i first started it, it had a bit of blue tinted smoke but after awhile that cleared off (burning crap off the turbos id put on) you can get in and drive it around and it wont smoke, not even under heavy boost, but then it will belch smoke like there is no tomorrow, it can get that bad it can hinder the car behind me's vision, you can then park it up and it will sit and clear the smoke, give it a few low revs (to around 3.5k) it will act like it has a major boost leak and hunt on idle, then clear its self fully and no more smoke.

One thing i have noticed, is it only seems to happen when you drive up hill, it will start smoking when the car is on an incline? ive changed both PCV valves now thinking it could be that, will be taking it for a test drive tomorrow as haven't got the time to do so to night.

One thing i did notice with the PCV valves ive just taken off, is the valve in side is very loose, as in no spring compression to force the valve closed, all other PCV valves ive had or seen in the past on our cars have a spring with some resistance to close the valve back off.

I thought it might be my turbo seals but im not sure, as it doesn't smoke under heavy boost or even when sat idling after boost. its quite random on when it smokes, only thing ive noticed as stated before, is when im going up hill it starts smoking? not sure if thats a red herring or not though.

Anyone got any thoughts? dont really want to be driving the zed to JAE and smoking up the road before i get there.

Oil pressure on my After market gauge is 80 on first start, drops to 20 and goes up to 40 when driving.

sounds like what ive just taken off, the ones ive just put on, have some resistance in the valve by a spring under tension when you poke it with a screw driver, never seen the PCV valves on any of my zeds with loose valves to the point that they just float about in it with no resistance.

Still seems a bit odd why its smoking only every now and then and not under full boost. could be the fact i just havent put many miles on this new engine and there is oil trapped in the intercooler system some where, the last engine was caking cylinder 6 with oil and also the plenum as the blow by gases were entering the upper intake to such a degree as to leave pools of oil in them. though there is no oil in the throttle body pipes side, its all clean O.o

Maybe it's just oil in the exhaust/cats from the previous blown engine.

Custom straight through exhaust bud, but from experience, if the oil is in the exhaust, it smokes from the moment the exhaust gets hot. i can drive normally for around 10 15mins or so, before it decides to start smoking and even then it doesnt smoke on boost, or at idle, or even know when its going to do it, its like random, only thing i can say is, it starts when going up hill, now not sure if that is a cause or not, is unknown at the moment.

Still hoping its just burning something off and once its done, its done. but for now, just looking at what it could be, the thought had crossed my mind that its turbo oil seal related.

Best to just keep an eye on the oil-level...if drops quickly the problem is most likely engine or turbos..if you don't seem to loose any oil it must be old oil in the exhaust :)

Wondering whether you have a broken oil scraper. Sounds like it's doing it under load. You can still get good compression results with a broken oil scraper. Drive it around a bit more though, oil can find its way into the ICs if you've had a faulty engine in there previously. It can take quite a while to burn off, but that generally always does it under boost.

Pop the turbo elbow off and check in the exhaust housing for oil, mine did this. The pool collected and on idle the flow wasn't sufficent to push it out the turbo, once the revs built up it would start to evaporate and blow out under the increased exhaust flow.

Don't forget the PCV is basically a check valve(non return) it's primary function is to close when positive pressure is applied to the plenum to stop you pressurising the crank case/heads galleries etc on boost. The PCV system, Off boost it's scavenging blow by gasses and on boost it's venting it into the acordion pipe. The main issues with PCVs is them sticking open or closed which allows them to do the wrong thing at the wrong time.

Si are you on about the oil pick up in the sump? not heard it called an oil scraper before. its happening under-load so to speak, i mean i can boost fine and get absolutely no smoke what so ever, just after awhile of driving, seems to be as the oil reaches temp by the looks of it, but again as stated, only seems to start smoking once im heading up the road about to park it up at the back of the house, took it for another spin today, again no smoke what so ever, moment i parked at the rear of my house, puffs of it coming from the exhaust. although not as much as the other day. im completely baffled.

EDIT, just read up on oil scrapers

Just a quick update, after changing the PCV valves from the very loose ones, to some with some resistance, and cleaning the compressor pipe work of excess old oil from the last engine, so far the zed has gone the whole weekend driving back and forth from JAE with no smoke. so i think at present it might be slightly safe to say (hopefully with out jinxing anything) that it was just burning oil off the compressor pipes once they had finally come up to temps (my second lower set of hard pipes had a large chunk of old oil ill missed, think i cleaned the same pipe twice lol )

Good news mate, was it your block that failed or your tubs?

on the engine i just removed? Piston ring on cylinder 6, kept throwing oil into the upper intake from the cylinder.

I changed over my injectors and turbos. to the new engine. then turned the boost down as i know its a stock bottom end lol

Ah, I see good old number six. Another block is what I need atm lol. Might be worth getting it mapped properly to iron out any chinks in the system.

It was mapped by Noz last year, should be a stock bottom end on the engine ive just taken out. I have 2 blocks here, well 2 VG30DETT's in the garden, one is on an engine stand with a cover over it, the other is currently sinking into the ground with a cover over it, that i need to put on a pallet. one was a blown head gasket, the other cylinder 6 piston ring. but other wise good. i will be rebuilding one though, the engine ive just put in, just has to last till ive finally got my wiesco pistons and eagle conrods in and rebuilt it properly. will be getting the parts and then most likely shipping it to jimmer to sort out.

Take it you need a block you dont have to do much to though?

Yeah pretty much mate, the ideal scenario is to get one with good compression I can drive about on without it letting go for about 18 months. I think the reality is that I'll be building an engine from scratch, hopefully I'll have the cash from successful legal action to pay a certain expert to do a proper job of it.

Same, well not the same situation, but i needed another engine in the car pronto as it was costing me cash to have it sat on a public road, with out it being drivable. so took the option to go for the quick fix, in order to do the long fix. didnt want to rush building an engine as thats when mistakes are made, at least at the moment, i can drive the car, plus will have the time to research the engine build properly and get the parts for it.
