Hi. I'm looking for to buy a short shifter. Most of US 300zx owners recommend a Z1 short shifter. Is there anything decent in UK that would be worth to buy or should I go only for Z1?

Thankz

I recommend NOT having a short shifter. I have driven countless numbers of Z32s with them and I hate them. The stock one is the best, it has a comfortable short throw anyway, it's smooth to engage, I have never gotten on with short shifters, so can't recommend them. The Z1 shifter does appear to be the most widely used one and I'd go for that if you really want one.

I have a Z1 shifter and it make you need to think about changes. On a 1/4 run, i've often missed 3rd gear because you really have to think about it. If you're standard one is working, just keep that...

Whilst I do have an auto ZX, I did drive a manual or two when first looking to buy....

....All I can add is that I understand where Si is coming from. I may (like many of us) be a bit 300zx biased, but it is a fundamental certainty that Nissan got most things on the Z32 right, straight from the box, 25 years ago. I've had a 300zx for 11 years now - and in that time I have had newer, premium branded daily drivers - right up to my latest (superb) new toy - but the Z has always been able to hold its own against them all...!!

I have something to say............ It's better to burn out than to fade away..... :tt2:

As above, you don't want it need one. Everyone ends up pulling the damn things off and going back to stock.

Ha Ha funny this, I've just binned my short shifter for a stock one. I have to agree, the stock shifter is smoother, altogether nicer - IMO.

I see... Ok then, so I guess I'll try to drive somebody's Z which has a short shifter before deciding whether I need it or not. Thank you, guys, for advice very much.

Surprised that there are so many short shifter haters out there, I have a cheap ebay one in my zx for over a year now and it is perfect, selects perfectly, shift is short and positive and never goes into the wrong gear. Feels like the MBG GT I drove many years ago. Maybe I am one of the lucky ones.

The best thing you can do to any Z32 manual transmission is simply to replace the shifter bushings on a stock shifter.
