Guys, this is a big one, I need a shoulder to cry on, and a welder :(

My car failed it's MOT on rust, I went elsewhere and it failed again. I had always planned to do a full on, 'glass out' respray at Bodymech probably next summer but can't really afford it at the minute. The car is out of MOT and it is here...

Insurance is up in 2 weeks, I am skinto because I just got the mechanical refresh done (K-Sports, Clutch, Cooling) This was because I could only drive it very gingerly as it was, the brakes were crap and the clutch was slipping. But now, it is knackered. I can afford the insurance I planned for that, but any big repair and we are into tins of beans and "please Mr bank manager..."

I feel awful, I feel like an idiot, I don't stop telling people how much I love my car blah-blah, but it is now borderline, "spares and repair". The garage it is at could patch it, but it will be an agricultural job, I think were past staples and glue, and into re-constructive surgery with this one.

Do I re shell, do I repair, do I retreat :no::sad:

And, If I drive it to bodymech for repairs, am I gonna get nicked. I am not taking the piss, I am taking it for specialist repair without MOT. And I will do it between midnight and 8am.

If the mot garage can patch it up to get a pass for not too much cash you might

do that, get a little "breathing space" for yourself, then get to bodymech at a

later date?

Sorry to see that mate.

Gutting to find that kinda rot. But in honesty that looks worse than it likely is.

You could get new sills welded into that without issue I would think.

As for driving it to Bodymech.

Honestly I wouldn't risk it. You can only drive from home to a place of a booked MOT or repair/MOT.

Now, in "theory" you could book an MOT with someone next door to bodymech, but the chances of a copper seeing that as a reasonable distance to drive are slim to feck all.

What you need a a friendly member with a beavertail who is will to do you an epic favour.

Only one I know with one is DKBORO121.

P.S, Don't scrap it - you'll regret it forever...

depending on cost would seem best bet

Gutted for you pal. How much do they want to fix it up to an mot pass standard? I'm assuming all that rot was hidden by the side skirts?

pre book your car into the mot station close to the body shop and ask them for a conformation email that its booked in for that day .print it out and take it with you. then your legaly covered. sorted. do the job right once the first time. good luck tom

Yeah, look at the signature picture down there V V V :(

£700 plus for an MOT repair at the place it is at, I am feeling, do it once do it properly. I saw them do a repair on a pick up truck, it looked like a repair Jeremy Clarkson would do to a Tank.

Spin, I like that idea, I think I am totally in the wrong, and that Lexx is right, but I am not like, going to the shops in an out of MOT car, I am taking it for repair.

Have to agree, I know it means bodging it for a bit but it gets you out the shit and able to save up until you can get it sorted properly.

Another thing, a bloke passing through the garage, as I kicked **** out of my skirts trying to get them off said "once you weld a car the heat harms the surrounding metal, you get 2 years at best then you are back to square one with rapid onset rust. Is this true?

The chew on I had getting the skirts off, I swear they were structurally integral, they were basically chassis.

it looks worse than it really is. I did the welding on the rear sils on mine. and I got a mobile welder who does car body work to do the front sills. so maybe a mobile car body specialist is the way to go. he did the fronts sills in 1 day at my house. it cost 250 for metal and labour

£700.00 for something that is going to need doing again/doing properly by someone else after is a definite no no then. Guess you need the experts (Bodymech) to take a look and give you some expert advice. Hope you can get it sorted mate. Whatever you do, don't give up though.

Technically I believe that the local heating will change the properties of the metal that's but that will be close to the weld and only affect the strength. The corrosion resistance will not change considerably. After all, remember that your car is welded together!!!

Alternatively you could get one of the Riggers to rivet new sills on for a crate? - Unless it's all civvy up there...

Racer, I asked about the original construction and he said they spot weld it. I agree with you over the "Bloke in the garage/pub/street..." Perhaps he is describing the sort of permanence you get from the welds done at "Yee-ha Garage Forres."

And the techies are all SKIOS (civvy) but they still drink :pint: :)

Heating doesn't change it's ability to rust that bull crap, that's a rumour due to people with poor welding skills contaminating the weld and it rusting quicker than the rest. Heat changes metals properties for strength or malubility etc. Otherwise everything in the word would fall apart after "2 years" I know of some steel vessels I work on that were built in 1930 and are full if pressurised water, they are welded and not falling apart.

Not only do side skirts hide rot them seem to encourage the bloody stuff. Time to break out the grinder and make a deal with a welder or learn.

Yeah, this is what I was trying to say but think you put it better Bolt! :surrender:

well if its going to cost you a temp 700 quid only to undo the temp tank rebuild as you say then hire a trailer for less than half that. i know of one that ive used in the past to transport my car but sadly i cannot recomend him as they damaged my car and also you dont live anywere birmningham.

Just hit the 'WTF' button for the first time!:lol::lol:

I would probably risk the drive, I am bending the rules but hopefully not breaking them, if I book an MOT then cancel it or whatever. It is the first step in a genuine MOT process.

Hi mate if it helps u can book the mot in with me, im a lot more south then bodymech so once your there you don't need to come to me...

I can send u all the details address, phone number etc, to be honest once your on the motorway all should be ok...

I personally think the worse problem with welding is you burn the paint off in the inside and u can cavity wax it etc, but unless you can see it u aint gonna cover every last bit and its likely to start to rust again from there,

But im sure it will last years, has long as there's no pin holes in the welds with filler over the top it cause then it will probably bubble up,

But I would get it welded by someone like bodymech and not mot standards,

Cause they will just weld bloody patches etc in which to do it right will all need cutting out,

So just drive the ****er to bodymech and be done with it lol...

Terry I like that idea, but will give it 12 hours to properly think through the plan here.

Things to do:

1) Check where my rear K Sports are (in the postal system) because it also failed on the stock rear callipers being rubbish.

2) Fit them or collect them at least

3) Speak to my man in Forres

4) Speak to Bodymech

5) Book an MOT anywhere on this line :)

6) Get it to the the resuss ward

7) Future proof the beautiful thing

I will sell my ZX10-R or a kidney or something

I have a welder you could borrow mate but you'd need to collect it.

I know i'm gonna get shot for saying this but..........................Put in a load of Kurust, Get a crap load of readymix fiberglass, fill the thing up, paint it and then take it for an MOT. It might last a month, it might last a year. If it gets through an MOT though...................

Well im here where the skull is devils island lol (isle of sheppey) so bodymech is on route,

Just let me know if and when u want it done...

No no I sorta agree. Cut it up and see what you've got, you can bodge it up quite happily as long as it gets through the mot. The skirt will cover up the abortion style repair. Then when funds allow you can get it cut right back and sorted properly. The summer is sortand the winter long.
