So its finally happening after been off the road for well over a year the zed is on Target for its refurbishment.

Last year I started with doing all the underbody suspension stuff to make the ride more stable and after that

I decided I wanted to do a full strip down to the bare shell and start from scratch to create a show quality z32.

After much bad luck and many thousands of pounds wasted on rotted zeds i'm cracking on with the original plan.

So as a quick update i'll post some older picks followed over the next few weeks by an overall progress report.

Starting off with how she was when I first purchased her 3 years ago until the state she is now then showing the

strip down and all the bad luck I've had.

So here she is as I bought her :

Back at the garage earlier and apart from not finding a timing gun I seem to have bigger issues.

First is I have a bad oil leak which I haven't identified where its coming from but its dripping down

from the oil filter so fingers crossed that its just needs tightened.

The next issue is that after 30 seconds from cold start or warm start shits loads of smoke rise from

both sides of the engine.

The engine also has a extremely high idle of over 1400 / 1500 which I can't get down.

I put a wee video up shortly.

High idle could be a number of things.

I would definitely get the timing checked first and go from there.

Tps setting would be my next port of call.

From there we could look at the base idle settings

Hopefully have a guy who knows a guy with a timing gun so will get that seen to in the morning.

Whats up with the TPS as I thought 0.44 was a the good target voltage to get.

Good point about the TPS, sorry,I could not quite make it out for the glare.

You are right, spot on.

Is the motor modified or standard?

The only reason I ask is that the consult screen shot appears to be looking for 19 deg' BTDC

Standard I believe is 15 deg' BTDC

That's prob because it's converted and the neutral switch isn't functional. Conzult tells you what the timing should be rather than what it is from memory.

Good point Stephen.

My understanding is that the ECU uses this figure to calculate, but the actual timing must be set by a strobe.

With a manual conversion, wouldn't you need the ECU to still show 15 deg's though?

You would yeah but because you short it out it thinks it's in gear, so advances the timing. Once the neutral switch is activated the timing will drop to 15btdc.

you aint going to get the timing to sit at 15 degrees with coolant temp at 48 and RPM at 1500..sounds like an air leak from the intake side and ide be checking cam covers including half moon seals for oil leaks as this will be wheres the smoke is from as it will be dripping on the manifold and running down the block....

Adjust your iacv, if that doesnt work do a vac test of your plenum to engine.

My v8 had a crazy high idle with plenty of smoke which turned out to be a shitty lower plenum gasket sucking air. Replaced gasket and bobs your mothers brother... Ran sweet as nut.

Also on the consult screen why is the o2 readings so low?

Don't worry about that for now, they should if they were needles ping and jump about when you rev it, could be they both need replacing, in good time though.

Good point there ZNUT.

As for high idle, another possible cause could be the TPS needs a re set.

Try disconnecting the connectors and then turning the ignition on for 30 seconds, turn ignition off and re connect.

I seem to remember having to do this myself a while back.

I feel like I should add something to this thread.

In 7 days (minus a couple of hours), Lee will be here to collect his newly-trimmed front and rear seats :)

"Why haven't we seen any pictures??" I hear nobody asking (yet!)... well, let's just say I'm working very hard right now, but they're starting to look a bit on the nice side...! :thumbup1:
