OK guys n gals well this is just a bit of fun really

My car is going to Noz for mapping and dyno testing on Thursday

Anyone want to try and guess what BHP I will get?

Assuming these are the things that will mostly determine or limit the results:

I have GTX2860R turbos

600cc Injectors from PFI Canada

Yellow Jacket coil packs

HKS EVC Boost Controller

Some sort of decat stainless exhaust system (never knew what it actually is)

Standard SMICs, Induction, manifold

Stock engine

Manual transmission

All the usual deletes - EGR, Air Con etc

So just for a bit of fun then, what's the best guess for that lot? Closest gets..... some street cred.... and rep from me lol

looking forward to this :thumbup1:

hey no worries the question was a good 'un

I have some more specific info now as Lee Dent knows what the clutch is seeing as he had to pull my engine

So I can tell you it is 'quote: Clutch was an exedy spec 1.1 so pods a stage 2 '

So toss that into the equation as well. Roll on Thursday...... quite literally i would imagine

This changes things :sailor:

Good luck buddy, make sure you take a video!

Yeah I misread that gtx2860r those are bloody nice turbos rich and I expect you will gain some very strong and usable boost from them. Previous statement stands, 540-560

I think no more than 450bhp due to the fmic holding it back and possible clutch but would like to see the print out graph would be interesting. Good luck mate.

Had a call from Noz today and unfortunately the remap got put back until next Tuesday as the rolling road was not available

So plenty time for more guesses lol

Of course I will scan and upload the results/graphs

Rich

Good luck :clover: whatever the number it will feel like a million and it's as much about how well it drives (which it will with noz's mapping) as how big your numbers are.

Cheeky edit :tt2:.

Mmmm, Aye, Well....

I took the car yesterday for the remapping, however during all the initial tests a few problems were highlghted (to do with various sensors not working properly, the boost controller and a few other issues) which basically meant that Noz was able to do a remap on the car so it is now fueling properly but he was not able to set up the boost on my turbos for safety (to the car) reasons, but it is currently only running about 0.6bar. It's possible I was being somewhat over cautious here as Noel did offer to do some performance runs on the dyno as the car stands but given my past records with Zeds lol (in other words the missus would kill me if I broke it again!) it was probably the best decision - or at least I felt it was.

So unfortunately guys I need to get these things sorted out then take her back for a proper performance map

As I am going on an extended holiday on the Costa Del Sol a few weeks that is either gonna be in a couple of weeks, or back end of July - depending on how quick I can get things sorted properly

Having said that the car is running very well on the road - it's just I couldn't do the fire-breathing monster stuff

Which basically means I don't have any dyno results for you guys at the moment. Sorry.

Well today I discovered something new....

It should have been quite predictable but what I discovered is big new GTX2860R turbos and 21yr old piston rings do not go together well!!

OK I took my car for a second attempt at a remap with Noz.....

It transpired my boost controller was not working now for some reason (was working last time he mapped it) and it was stuck at 10psi boost

The car was running OK with this, at about 330BHP Noz said

Anyway, Noz connected a manual boost controller to complete mapping the car, and at 18psi and 5000RPM the 21yr old piston rings decided they did not like all this extra pressure one little bit - and the car proceeded very suddenly to eject the dipstick and a considerable quantity of oil from the engine in quite spectacular fashion whilst simultaneously chucking out a hell of a lot of smoke from the exhausts

OK so boys and girl this is probably old knowledge but from my own experience now..... trying to get 550BHP out of a 21yr old engine in retrospect was probably not the best of ideas!!!

Things are not a total disaster. Set back at 10psi and now remapped, the car is running fine for normal road use at around 330BHP and it's not throwing oil out all over the place or huge amounts of smoke either.

I guess my next step now is to rebuild my original block while keeping the car on the road for the summer with this engine fitted.

Unfortunately this now means I won't be able to take my car on the track at TOTB as planned - I don't want to give it the strain of doing that and hopefully it will see me through the rest of summer OK

Sorry to hear that rich, time for a rebuild then.

  • Author

Yep looks like it Steve

It was always part of the plan for my old block this coming winter - I just hoped to get more out of this one in the meantime

As I say it is not a total disaster, the car is quite usable as it stands, just I ain't ever gonna get any big horses out of this engine in this condition.

Noooooooo Rich sorry to hear that mate ive lost my TOTB rookie wingman. At least it didnt self destruct and wreck the engine completely after all that effort. Regroup mate and start afresh over winter mate. You still coming to totb to watch ?

Sorry to here this Rich, think we both been down this road pushing for big horses out of an old engine,I to have to except defeat and go for a full rebuild, but going to push for some BIG power.

@Ian

Sorry Ian - we did discuss on Saturday who was most likely to blow up the engine first - just i did it even before I even got on the track FFS

Yeah know what I think I wil come to watch - as mentioned the car is running OK on the road, just it's not going anywhere near a track right now unfortunately mate.

@Gray

Good to hear Gray it's not just me who made that particular mistake then, Know what though - I also intend to make enough BHP to ensure the trip is well worth the defeats and hassle on the way!

Could be some very powerful Zeds on the forum next year I reckon

Dicky I hope you haven't already paid your £100?

I've been toying with doing TOTB one year but keep deciding against it

A bit of a nightmare all round. It didn't smoke any more at 18psi than at 10psi though and it wasn't a failure so to speak and it definitely isn't "blown up". There is crank case pressure building up, but it would need further tests as discussed to pinpoint the exact issue. The amount of smoke from the start was very worrying though. It's a massive shame, as the GTX2860 turbos need at least 22psi to be efficient, and the 10psi actuators are definitely not suited to the job. I've had some ideas and will discuss with you after the weekend.
