I tried to test the timing on my Z today and cannot see the timing mark on the pulley...... painted it white and on the timing marks....

Started her up, timing gun set to 15 degrees and there is NO mark visible on the top or sides of the pulley..... I can't see the mark anywhere?

I had loosened off the CAS to adjust it and now have sod all acceleration...... bloody nightmare....

Starting to think the timing gun is faulty...... I did have to do a bit of moving the 'pick up' to get any strobing at all......

It almost looks like the timing is 180 degrees out, but couldn't be that as engine runs and ticks over nicely......

Do you have a lightened pulley? If its oem then there is a "V" on the inner edge of the pulley, lightened, no timing marks on some.

Hi Groover, STD pulley and painted the timing mark white on the pulley...... but as soon as the engine is started and the timing light put on it there is no sign of the mark...... can't see a thing on top or either side of the pulley.....

Struggling to get the light to even trigger using Jeff's technique of cable tied open pickup sat on top of No 1 coil pack..... have to move it to one certain spot and it picks up.....

It is as though the timing mark on the pulley is 180 degree out as the mark just isn't visible anywhere using the timing gun......

dont forget iff you have the gun set to 15 degree then your timing mark on the pully will be showing TDC...also with the cowl on its hard to pinpoint the beam iff outside;)

Is she up to running temperature Russ?

Hi Redwine, she is up to temp but still cannot see the mark anywhere....

Hi znut, I tried gun set to zero and 15 degree, cowling is not fitted and the timing mark still cannot be seen anywhere in the range or anywhere on the top of the pulley.... strobe lights the pulley and marks on cover, but no mark on pulley anywhere....

your going to have to get in there with a more localised beam....i have a Snap-on gun and still need to get right in there (watch the fan with no shroud)...you are on number 1 arnt ya:tt2:. its got to be coming up but not getting highlighted thats all mate.

EDIT....surely your cam timing is not that far out it cant be brought up with the CAS variance slot:eek: who put the belt on??

It seems impossible to be this far out..... like the timing gun is firing 180 degree out.... Mine is a sealey pro one with advance and retard dial.....

I am going to try to find one from my MOT centre and see if it is the gun......

Yep I was using no1 coil pack.....lol

Strange question, are you sure the mark you put in place is actually where the mark should be? Also there is a coiled black wire on the ptu loom, try that for pick up as that was it's intended use.

Well tried snap on timing light and sensor sitting on top of coil pack no 1 and got 91 degree's out?????????

Now starting to wonder how this is possible........ and the car still running..........??

Going to ring Jeff...... Hellllpppppppp...... lol

Thanks for that znut.... I have a spare one...... But wouldn't that mean it ran like crap or just wouldn't run at all at 91 degrees out?

The timing mark was way round to the left as you look at it......

Is there any difference between crank pulley on TT and NA ????

Going to check TDC on no1 later and see that it is correct to the timing mark on the pulley......

Now starting to worry I left the key out when I refitted the bottom pulley......

Aaaaaarrrggghhhhh...........

when they go bad i do believe they "tell lies" to the timing signal but mechanicly your timed up correctly

I am going to check the TDC first to make sure pulley marks are in the correct place...... If that is correct then I will swap over the CAS unit and see what happens......

Typical the day before we drive to Norwich for our anniversary in the Z......... lol

She seems to run okay, but today had a few problems with her stalling when slowing down to a stop or coming off the gas...... not done this before......

Also noticed smell in car of fumes...... over fuelling???

Hi Russ, just putting 2 and 2 together and probably getting 5. But have you been working on a manifold gasket issue?

May explain the smell of gas and also you may have disturbed something, perhaps the connector to the Cas?

I am just looking for cause and effect really , but may just be coincidence.

Cheers Redwine, got the exhaust gasket sorted out as I fitted it upside down and now the right way and sounds so quiet now......

Checked the CAS connection and all okay....

Also noticed that I lose the oil pressure when engine warms up now...... goes from 4 when cold to 0 when warmed up....... knackered sender or big problem??????

Got out spare CAS unit and will swap tomorrow and check with timing light as well as TDC using rod down plug hole on number 1 piston and checking that mark on pulley is at 0 degree when at TDC....

Thanks for the idea's......

Hoping Jeff pops on here tonight as getting grief from wife about not taking her on our 1st Anniversary / Honeymoon.......... Life will not be worth living..... as daily driver is now dead as well......

Iff your 90 degree out which i think is very very slim to near impossible having it running so smooth then mechanicly your not going to see 0 degree...what you need to establish is TDC on number 1 with all valves closed to determine "true TDC" and this can be found easly by compresion tester and turning by hand.

I would not dismiss the sender out of hand, they are known to be a bit unreliable but you never know for sure.

Mine used to be intermittent, but after a valve treatment and fresh oil it works well.

How old is your oil? It maybe getting thin at full temp.

As for TDC, as Znut said, you need to be sure you are on a compression stroke and not exhaust stroke.

You will have a 50 50 chance of being right first time.

Lets hope it's something simple mate.

I'm sure it will be.

Fingers crossed for the CAS swap.
