is there a particular reason why my auto box dislikes the cold seems to take ages to go through the gears until the car warms up sometimes goes right up to 3000 revs before the last change

I know sod all about zed auto boxes exept mine went and wouldn't go into the last gear, I converted to manual,

 

Only thing I can think of is they have a filter in the box if its dirty and clogging up maybe when the box is hot the fluid is thinner and gets through better, but thats just a guess lol...probably very wrong...

complete fluid change including a new filter will make a world of diference..drop the sump pan and the filter is right there under the plate,also check the sump magnet for metal particals while your in there

is the filter a nissan only part or can i buy elswhere also what fluid do i use and how much please

....Try to get as much of the old fluid out of the torque converter as you can too!

I think the filter is from nissan and the fluid is atf not a long life life time super expensive bmw crap...

Yup; buy the filter from Mike at MJP and purchase any decent branded normal ATF from your local motor factors:thumbup:

dheers lads did the fluid not used to be dextron or something it was change 2 yrs ago but not the filter also fluid still looks pink and not burnt

Couldn't remember if it was dextron 1/2/3 any decent car shop will look it up for you...

No need to buy a filter as its a cleanable steel strainer, also the gearbox has a temperature sensor and is so designed as to prevent higher gears been selected until the fluid is over a set temperature, if the sensor fails it thinks the box is cold.

Yes its a metal micro mesh strainer, I use brake cleaner and the air line which deal with it quickly, petrol will be ok, once clean flush a little auto box fluid through it to get rid of any remaining petrol.

cheers jeff is it best to replace the box sump gasket as well and how much dextron 2 does it take please

The gasket is best changed, get one from an auto gearbox specialist as it will be around a fiver, Nissan one is four times that and is essentially the same.

 

As far as fluid amount, you will not be draining the torque converter cooler and lines so make sure you have at least 4 litres and when you refill it put 3.5 in and then top after you have run it up.

 

Note: if yours has a drain plug do be fooled that the sump is empty, the boss for the drain thread is 3/4" inside of the sump so getting on for a litre will still be in there so be careful or you will be getting covered in the stuff.
