I am sure a little Googling wouldn't hurt..... ;)

Hold button does exactly that, holds the gears for a bit longer. OD is for cruising. Select that if you want to cruise in a low gear to reduce the revs.

Why google when the chances are the link will direct to here....This is a Z32 club and Forum for questions like above. Please dont ask users or members to "google" when they have joined this club for help and advice as its bad manners imho.

Give over.

Members should be directed to wherever the information can be gained. I google all the time for 300zx related stuff as generally there is more information on the US forums than is here. Also the search function is crap.

I even google this site specifically using "site:300zx.co.uk" as it works much better than the site sown search function.

Chill out Bri! 'New members' ask a lot of the same questions (no disrespect to the OP what so ever). The forum is full of 'what oil do I need' and such like threads. This was quite a simple question with a simple answer that google might have been quicker to look at (in future - there's a wealth of information via that method, far more than the forum will ever be able to offer). All 90s sport autoboxes are pretty much the same with these same features. More info would have been gained by a quick google search. Everyone that has an autobox pretty much knows what the functions are anyway.

The question was also answered and the post was friendly. OP got the info and admitted he was being 'lazy'!

The 3 lights POWER, OFF and HOLD refer to:

1) Power light = when hard acceleration ( kick down) operated for longer than 5 seconds and then gives 10 seconds of sports mode (6k revs change pattern)

Note: This is also the light to watch when doing the built in diagnostic.

2) O/D off = simply means the overdrive button is in the off position this means you have only 1, 2 and 3 rd gear, no over drive or torque lock up ( feels like 5th gear)

3) Hold = this is when the hold button is active and no first gear is used, this helps in ice or snow conditions pulling away in 2nd gear to help prevent wheel spin.

Note: Hold can also be used as an economy mode, up change is sooner into the higher gears and the gear holds longer before changing down.

I should have googled. I am never answering a question about auto transmissions ever again! Epic fail!

I was partially correct.....having never owned an auto Z. No medal required.

Nice one Jeff:wink:

I have something to say............ It's better to burn out than to fade away..... :tt2:

It's simply amazing how many people don't bother to search using the forum search function. Sticking in power hold button gives FIVE pages of threads. http://www.300zx.co.uk/forums/search.php?searchid=1109286&pp= with the earliest one going back to 2002! Of course not all of these are just to do with auto trans buttons because search isn't that clever but since there is a search, why not use it :headvswal (oh and several times, I find google can pick up stuff from this forum just as well / better).

Two posts from the past: http://www.300zx.co.uk/forums/showthread.php?23177-Power-Hold-switch&p=180910&viewfull=1#post180910

at the risk of sounding a bit off - this has been answered on here loads - try a search!

And from AndyP in 2003 http://www.300zx.co.uk/forums/showthread.php?19702-A-T-Button-Power-and-Hold&p=148880&viewfull=1#post148880

The Japanese automatic transmission has many more features than the export models. A "power", "normal" and "hold" switch is fitted to modify transmission shift points. The effect of the "power" setting is to delay upshifting, but does not alter the maximum RPM that change occurs. In order to change at the red line or rev limiter speed, one must operate the shifter manually. The hold setting allows holding prevents downshift into second when the shifter is set to "D", and prevents downshift into first when the shifter is in "2". Another curious feature with the Japanese version is that lock up is also available in second gear.

Can't remember where I nicked this ...

The 4 speed automatic transmission is a lockup type. When in drive mode, gears change 1-2-3 then 3 lockup, giving the effect of 4 gears. When overdrive (4th) is switched in, the change goes 1-2-3-4 then 4 lockup, giving the effect of 5 forward gears. There is a communications link between the automatic transmission control computer and the engine management computer, and this amongst other things, allows the engine computer to retard ignition, thus momentarily reducing engine power, during auto gear changes. Auto gear changes therefore are very smooth. The automatic transmission fitted to the turbo model is stronger than the one installed in the non turbo. Although the gear ratios are almost identical, there are many minor differences between the two transmissions.

It's even in the manual so can't think why anyone has a problem:

OM_Auto_buttons.jpg:devil2:

Still it isn't as bad as the interminable insurance questions when every time I see one I think Oh FFS doesn't anyone bother to use search and please please can we have just one thread for insurance. :D

Plus I hadn't heard JeffTT's explanation that Hold can be used as econ mode so I will try that out for a couple of tanks and see if it works. There you go, you can teach an old dog new tricks and sometimes posting the same bloody question gets new info. Thanks laner84.

I agree with bri on this, I have never understood why people want to join a thread, not to answer the question, but to tell the person where to look or how to search for the answer when the thread has already been started, and the person replying, could of easily just answered the question.

It took no more time to tell someone to google the answer, than it would have to just reply with the correct answer, as the thread is already here, considering ive been around a few people not very savvy in the ways of the world wide web, google can be a scary place with a lot of misinformation, same goes for forums, not everyone joining a forum, is well keyed on how to use one properly IE: the search function (if it actually gives you the search results you want in the first place).

Also, you say that you get better results on google than here, well surely that should encourage you to reply with the best answer here, thus giving anyone who does want to search, a better result when they do search, and adding to the knowledge base.
