I've just been browsing the net at images of the ZED and the Yankees have definitely got it right!

No front number plate!

IMO it completely ruins the front of the car/bumper. There are some lovely bumpers out there for sale, but they don't look as good when there's a massive bit of white plastic screwed on the front! Why are our laws so different?

It's only certain states where they don't have to run a front license plate. But yeah it looks sooooo much better.

I agree looks so much better without, no doubt ANPR and easy to identify for the police

I'm having some work done on a front bumper for my zed. Included in that is removal of the front plate mounts. Yeah, looks so much smoother without. I think I've found a way round it too.

I've got one of those ready to be fitted in the spring.

Not the same company mate, got my one from ebay. Very similar by the looks of it. There is someone else on here that has one fitted.

i agree and so nearly didnt put one on the front at all so i settled for my one i use and so far todate have not yet been pulled for it , baring its size you can see the letters clearly and i do have a full size one in the boot, agree the back needs the full size to brake up yhr back and as for speed cams then they take a pic of the back of the car anyway,

Some camera are forward facing, mobile cameras included. Essentially they can't sit on a bridge a mile down the road a bugger you over without a front plate. That's why you need one.

The best looking solution to the front numberplate (a legal one, anyway) has to be the OEM UK one where the plinth exactly matches the charcoal strip on the front bumper. Not even the Japanese plate looks good on that or the 99 spec one.

TBH, I'm not that bothered about how the front plate looks as I can't see it when I'm in the Z.

I agree with this.

Actually I think the 99-spec with no front plate looks a little strange as there's a moulded bracket on it. Some of the yanks remove it and smooth it over, but I think that looks even more strange and gives the car an almost cartoon robot mouth. The best front ends with no front plate are actually stock TT front bumpers.

I really like the UK OEM plinth in association with the moustache. I had considered going that route and would do if I hadn't already gotten my little one. :)

Haha. Maybe. It was never on it to begin with. I do really like the moustache and have been 50/50 on refitting it ever since I bought the car.

I agree with this.

I have something to say............ It's better to burn out than to fade away..... :tt2:

Here you go - two side by side as a comparison:

datsun 300ZX 019.jpg

and a slightly better shot showing the UK plinth head on. I know Richard just posted his but these things just look so much better in silver. Oh, that's a different argument thread :D

I agree. Silver is a great colour for the Z32 - also like the plinth. Square front plates are a non-no too. :)

Nice pic Mike - and I see yours has (had) a slightly shallower 'plate to fill the plinth; and not over-lap 10mm or so below it. Nice....

I do like the aesthetics of the uk plate with its moulded mounting bracket, but I'm going to defend the jdm setup for no apparent reason other than it's what I have! Although, on a completely unproven, unknown quantity, logic says that it lets in more cooling air to the rad and direct air to the filter so could possibly be beneficial.

Hmmm. That was a UK plinth from MJP so the plinth should be the same - but you're right about the plate. I forget what we did but if you compare to yours, the spacing above/below the letters is minimal (prob not legal) so maybe we did cut it down or something.

Not keen on the OEM UK plinth as a) I don't like full size (legal) number plates when displaying short registrations b) the overhang

of a legal plate along the bottom of the plinth looks odd and c) the protrusion of the plinth on the bumper spoils the profile of the

bumper.

Each to their own of course, but I installed my plinth in the dustbin.

Bloody hell, Mike could have had that! :wack:

Would have come in handy because believe it or don't, one of the many unstarted projects for the silver Zed was to get a UK plinth and then shorten it for just the reason a) AndrewG gives - my "short" reg looked a bit lost swanning about on a fullsize plate. b) I also agree with which must be why we did something about it. But (and each to his own) I disagree with the "stuck on" look: to me a plinth is needed to make it look"deliberate and the right place for the plate". Anything else (including JDM flapping in the breeze) just looks a tad unfinished.

I had a dig and found these comparisons of various plates and combinations on all 3 of my Zeds:

1) Zed 1 (short reg looking lost but on plinth) and Zed 2 (looks just bolted on any old how)

PICT1033.jpg

2) Zed 3 (full size reg and plate but looks silly on that small plinth) and Zed 2 with smaller plate but I still think would look better in "UK normal" position.

And ref Joely Ps comment, I only just got away with that at MOT time by claiming airflow as the reason for a small plate mounted where it was!

3) Zed 3 with my short and "import size" reg plate

vs colnbrook crop.jpg

If I wasn't lucky enough to have a short reg which just fits exactly in that JDM plinth, not sure what I would have done. Sticky letters on the bumper? Painted grille (was that done by Lotus or Caterham some time back?) - or maybe swapped the 99 spec bumper for the earlier type
