Firstly - VG purists will hate this thread. I've heard it all before so no need to bang on about how I'm.committing a sin etc etc.

I love my slicktop. I got it for a steal, so there's no way I'm selling it to buy a TT so forget that option.

So with all that in mind, when my house extension and garage workshop are complete next year, I'll be pulling the VG and replacing it.

What would people have and why?

So fat I have these choices

VH45DE

LS1

RB

VQ35DE or HR

VQ30DET.

All have been done by others, so all are possible.

Some are easier than others obviously.

Cost wise - for engine and gearbox and loom they all work out roughly the same.

Not at all Alex - some engine transplants are worthwhile.....

As a petrol head with a hankering for a V8, my first choice would be the VH45DE. Followed by the VQ35HR (the DE and the VQ30DET are probably not much of an upgrade when stock) as the HR produces 306bhp+ in standard form in the later 350z.

I'd rule out the LS1 as I'd prefer to keep the Nissan heritage; and the RB is but a mere straight-6.... For me I'd want to remain a little pure and retain the V-formation; whether a 6 or an 8

The r35 engine ...

Else a vg30dett !!

Can't afford a R35 engine, and I'm not willing to put in a VG30DETT. Why would I replace an already awkward engine to work on, with one that's even worse?!

Don't fit an rb it's a bloody fashion statement. Nissan could have used a straight six hell the original fair ladies had them. They chose not to due to the block height would have ruined the lines and affected the weight distribution, the vg keeps that weight inboard and low down. Due to its v configuration.

Your costings of purchasing sorting and then fitting new tubs/tub will leave will you out of pocket. Be cheaper to build a vg30dett and some new tubs. You would probably end up with a more powerful engine. RB is for scene kids.

The logical choice is therefore a v. The vh45 suits the car better with its high revving block. There's something that doesn't seem right about a long stroking yank v8 in a sleek jap car, that's coming from a v8 lover.

I'm guessing the r35 engine will be cash heavy seriously cash heavy. And the 350 engine is just a more modern vg if it wasn't for emissions the 350 would have a vg.

Pretty sure some of the racing r35s have the vh45 in them, follow thier example :)

Benefit of a VQ35DE is I have easy access to good second hand examples for cheap. I also know them pretty well from my time with Z33s.

Your very limited to what you can do though arnt you unless you turbo it. At which point not only is it going to start getting expensive it's also just as messy as the vg that was designed to fit in there.

The vh is more powerful in stock na format and I'm fairly sure turbo able without a costly rebuild.

SC on a VQ will give 400hp. which will be more than enough to be honest.

I'm not going for big numbers, I just like to be different.

Can you do that on stock pistons and rods? Equally what sort of cash is involved? Sounds like a big expense to get what you'd get from a simple remap on a vg. If you want to be different the vh is the one honestly.

I'm just brainstorming all options. It's good to chat about pros and cons, I haven't settled on a VQ.

VQ stock internals are good for 400bhp ish. anything above that needs it to be built.

Much of the cost involved in a SC set up will be stuff that gets done in an engine swap anyway.

I can get a Vortec V3 and fuel return system for about £4k. other bits and pieces to add to that obviously.

Cost wise for the power, the VH is a better option. But if I only want 300hp then a VQ is fine.

I prefer NA to FI anyway actually.

1jz or. 2jz such a strong engine in standard form I know it's out of our competior the dreaded supra .

LT1 from a c7 6.2 small block v8 stock 455hp stock or RB26 engine

Ahh, maybe my friend - but that's American BHP; which is about 102 of our "normal" BHPs.....

I know that you say you don't want a VG30DETT but if I had to choose what to upgrade an n/a it's the one I would choose based on the following; The zed was built around the VG and the engine has a very low CoG which helps give the zed a near 50/50 weight distribution think it's 52/48 or something close. Which is not far from a mid engined car. Other engines may not have this low Cog and may feel a bit top heavy in the car. The other option would be a single turbo on the exhaust at the rear. AnthonyD did something similar a few years back and he had great results from it.

Just my thoughts.

LOL - sorry Steve, you're right. I forget we're all European now and have to measure in German PS...

Do we@ I thought we won the war...

PS means nothing to me, so I'm going to stick to bhp and Brussels will just have to sue me :)

I know there old school now but i was always a big fan of the Cosworth V6...beast of a motor which loved rpm,s

Don't know where the cost of a Yank and the jap stuff including loom etc is roughly the same! LOL!

Roughly double it for the jap gear IMHO!

Oh, and my old 2 bolt Chevy, with Edelbrock heads, cam and Carb made just over 400 bhp, ask Suzy on the Z club-that's REAL horses BTW.........

Anyway never worry what others think about what you want to do with YOUR car, I was slated for even thinking about it,until I did it!

The 3.4l 24v cosworth GAA?

VK56DE :devil2: Failing that, definitely the VH

I don't have any issue doing an engine as long as it's got the better. Swapping an engine for another simply to have a different engine that's the same power output or sometimes less powerful is a dumb move imo.

There's a chap in the states with an SR20det in his z32....:s

You can drop a less than a grand into a good vg and make over 400hp solidly. If you've gotca crate ls motor making 500hp na and a blown vg crack on, but if you've got a healthy one the money spent going ls could potentially be far better spent.
