....But for the first time today, my ZX decided to break down:shock:

As it was a dry sunny day, I thought it would be nice to take it with me on a trip to my folks. I was driving along happily as usual; and as I reached the bottom of the entry slip onto the A41 dual carriageway, the engine cut out. I pulled over to the left and tried a couple of times to restart it - but no. It turned over well enough, but it just would not fire up:sad:

I called the RAC; who were very helpful. Even before I had to say anything, the RAC lady said that their patrol would have absolutely no idea what to do with a 300zx and agreed the best course of action was to send a recovery truck ASAP. She even took the initiative to make sure it was one where the flat-bed could come all the way down onto the road, as she assumed the car was of the low variety!!

The RAC also gave it priority, as I was positioned on a virtual blind bend of a slipway onto a 70mph dual carriageway. Sadly the contractor they used did not have the same sense of urgency; and I had to wait over 2.5 hours. Still he arrived eventually and now my car is at DS Automotive in Aylesbury - which was the nearest place I could think of with any experience of a ZX to be able to diagnose the fault - and so I await the results.....

Richard:sad:

I have something to say............ It's better to burn out than to fade away..... :tt2:

Oh dear, I've had quite good use of the aa "the UK's 4th emergency service" as they claim

Can we take guesses? I'm gonna say fuel pump. Just a stab.

Hope you get it sorted without too much hassle.

That's very annoying! Hope its something n nothing. Shame you aren't a bit closer. You could have joined our get together at Lee Dent's tomorrow.

You to Rich! I was moving mine out of the garage into the yard for a wash a few days ago and it started to go of a cylinder and cut out I have put it down to a loose connection that I have probably knocked when changing the spark plugs.I drove it back into the garage and will have a good look this weekend.

Hope yours is just something simple to fix Rich. Are you sure you had petrol in it?:whistling:

Fuel pump relay or fuse, probably nothing serious, but waiting for the recovery is always the worst part about breaking down, not only are you stressed by the fact the car wont start, but have to wait in the freezing cold to be picked up.

Hope they manage to sort it for you mate :thumbup1:

Hop it gets sorted quickly Rich.

My current record for Recovery stands at 18 hours to be recovered a total of 68 miles by the AA when my VXR8 decided to suffer full brake failure during a snow storm on the M18

Good old vauxhalls, was it generally a pain? We had a cavy when iwasca nipper it broke down at the drop of a ht, I then foolishly had a corsa for about 18 months, omg what a piece, it literally fell apart in your hands it had only done 45k when I decided the thing needed to go. Work brought a few Astra vans and a hatchback Astra they are al hated.

They often look so smart though, the vxr8 was on my wish for a while but I've since re minded myself I won't buy another vauxhall.

What a royal pita Richard, hopefully it is ask pale fix, I make a rule of carrying a basic tool kit but I doubt you would have had much use for one . I recon the the pump is dead.

If you were on the bend you could of left the car in gear and cranked the car over and hopped to the side so you could of been a bit safer.

Occasionally mine does run a bit rough but a switch off and it's sorted and if that doesn't mend it the zed pixies mend it overnight, maybe sometimes it doesn't start when warm but I think a new battery will sort this but cutting out once going as never happened, sure you'll keep us posted :cool3: .

Loved every minute of owning that car. I only sold it to pay for a house deposit and a wedding.

It's a Holden, so doesn't come with any of the usual made in UK/Germany VX niggles.

I will own another. I'm considering selling 2 of my cars and getting another next year.

Sorry to hear that Rich. Fortunately, I haven't had to call the AA/RAC/Greenflag out for bloody years. I can't even remember when I did. Gotta have been over a decade ago now.

Yeah....these are probably famous last words!

Thanks for the kind thoughts folks........

ptu failure, sorry to hear of ya bad luck mate, hope its an easy fix

That was my first thought Allan - it is a series 2 car, on which the issue is supposed to have been rectified though...... Funnily enough, it cut out twice last Friday also - once as I left my friend's house after a trip to the classic car show; and again when I had just reversed it into the garage. Hmmmm, thinking about the fuel pump now it has been mentioned......

And in reply to other comments...

Roo - I know; I'm a hundred miles from Jeff and probably about 140 from Lee. I decided on the local option in the end, as I would have needed to get back home afterwards!!

Gaz - yes mate, the fuel tank was just short of full:wink:

Graham - you're probably right mate; but I have my fingers crossed!! And whilst the RAC was on the ball, it was a shame their sub-contractor (remaining nameless:mad:) was not!!

Dave (CM) - good idea in principle; but I have an auto!! I let the car roll as close to the left as possible though; and parked with the front wheels facing left in case I was hit from the rear.

Si - famous last words indeed; but then your Z is safely locked away in hibernation now mate:wink:

I will keep you all informed!!

Eeewww an auto

Should still work on an auto shouldn't it?

No - you cannot crank the engine of an auto (any car) unless it is in neutral or park mate....

The Series 2 part refers to the 2nd gen of PTU, not that it came with the Series 2 car, which it does not. So unless you have retrofitted a S2 PTU, it will still have the old S1 PTU.

Holy f*ck. 18 hours !? That was'nt stuck with the car was it? or do you mean they put you up somewhere to stay inbetween ?

Never knew that always wondered why my s2 came the the s1 ptu now has a s2 on :)

If it is fuel pump related, there is a fuel pump control unit underneath where your left elbow would be, if you were sat in the back left seat. I had a connector burn out in there, and my car had cut out twice briefly in the days before it properly cut out. As the connection faltered. If you cut the fuel pump, the car will idle with fuel from the lines for about 12 seconds. So if it was a failing connection it would be able to handle a short cut out of the pump.

That was with the car throughout.

3 different recovery vehicles and 2 different service stations as no one would take me the full way.

I left the AA the day after.

Cheers Yowser - I never knew that either!! I haven't fitted a S2 PTU; but it does have the one with the fins on the casing - whichever version that is.....

Loose cas connection.

Thanks Jeff - another informed diagnosis...... I'll probably be on the phone to you Monday afternoon:wink:

Cheers Andrew - looks like it's the old type then..... Although my car is a 1994 registration, I guess it could have sat around unregistered for a while!!
