Well....further to my last thread....my clutch gave up the ghost on Sunday...mwarrr... :(

But I spent a pleasant hour () sitting on the side of the A329M watching drifting lorries and cars wandering across the lanes into the hard shoulder while I sat on the grass praying for them not to hit my car, waiting for AA to show up...

So...symptoms were as follows :

Driving along at a comfortable 70mph (honestly), revs suddenly slipped up to 5000rpm. Lost power - was almost like the car was in neutral. Pulled over to hard shoulder. Turned off engine after a wee idle for the turbos. Re-started engine, put car in gear, foot on accelerator and smoke poured out from under the car - driver's side - visible via the wheel arch along with the smell of toasted clutch... :(

No noise, no screaming (from the car :)), nothing... Wouldn't even bite to get onto the tow truck.

So - how much of my clutch has gone? Or is there something else I need to be aware of as well?

Bad luck... :( .....but would seem odd for drive to suddenly go like that when travelling at a steady speed? my first thoughts would be oil on the clutch poss rear seal failure? sorry can`t be more positive.

Good Luck

Is that a hu-owg job, Jeff?

Have spoken to Nissan yesterday and they advise that to replace the clutch would be a 6 hour job...is the rear seal easier / quicker or is it still akin to wall-papering your hallway through your letterbox?

Let me guess, to repair the clutch you have to remove the "Z" from the centre of the steering wheel and operate through that? ;) ;)

Very VERY funny! I could have used a 3/4/5/6/7 letter abbreviation but I can't spell. So just take my word for it that I am in fact laughing!

Just this once then, Mike, I will take your word. I'll let you have it back tomorrow. :D

ajay - to do the rear main oil seal, its the same as doing the clutch + a little bit more:D thought id keep it simple!

Cheers Paul....Helpful as you like. :D ;)

ok, gearbox off to get to clutch, clutch off to get to flywheel, flywheel off to get to rear oil seal. is that better?? lol!

Can I just mention I think it would probably help if you put the car up on some form of ramp? This will probably allow you to get underneath more easily. ( ;) )

HTH

thanks Gio, I also forgot to mention you may need spanners/socket set to undo the nuts & bolts holding the components together!

This is actually a good point - don't forget you need new exhaust gaskets too ;) LOL

Paul, you forgot the monster 1/2" drive extension bars you need and the hands of small childrem to get at those top gearbox bolts.... :p
