Can't help exactly but the heads are stamped L40P for the engines 89 to 95 and L48P for 95+ engine

Carbon dating like they do with fossils, see how much carbon has built up in the.........:lol:

As above or you can take your engine number into a Nissan dealer and they can scratch their heads and say dunno

Or someone more helpful will be along soon to answer your question:biggrin:

So are all the heads either 40 or 48p?

I'm just wondering as the 89 engines had head problems didn't they?

Yeah from what I understand they are one or the other. Never heard about that issue myself

You could pop off the timing cover, there's differences on some of the ages there. Different cam pullies.

P36 Heads from 89 only had Soft valves all most like the ones fitted to the NA engines

P40 late 89>late95

P46 96>99

chances of getting p36 heads is quit remote as the cases of problems was in the usa

with all the engine i have seen/played with .. not one ..

was only talking about this with jimmer the other day and he hasnt seen one too

as for putting a date on the engine ... no S/N stamp

u can only tell if its a S1 > S2 > S4

S1 has old one peace cam pulleys

S2 has 2 peace Cam pulleys and Lugs for covers on plenum

S3/4 has peace cam pulleys / Lugs / No VTC

Is there a way to date an engine?

What, like buy it flowers, chocolates etc.....? I'm sure there are no laws against it, it's not like it's a sheep or your sister....

.....But you'll get some funny looks in the pub - especially when you order it a half of Castrol. And don't forget this fella....

Pmsl that's a great little read that, i thought I'd heard it all till I seen that, it's not secretly you is it Richard lol

I think the Nissan FAST cd will give you the engine number for each VIN, so with a bit of judicious searching you could probably work out the date of the car that the engine came from.

I'm pretty sure it's a S1 engine but in a series 2 car.

Mark derby - do you have pictures of the differences in the cam pulleys that you mentioned above

I'll have to have a look at that.. I read a post on the Oz forum where they said that there was no check that could be done on the engine (by number)..

so if it is possible it would be good to be able to post and clarify.

Thats right ... no engine s/n on the engines just the model number

So no way of knowing of the date ..

GOING BY THAT INFO MINE WAS PRODUCED IN JAPAN. Werd that considering its a uk car.

Reminds me of the round-and-round-until-I-slammed-the-phone-down conversation with a car insurer back in my first phase of Zed ownership: "we can't insure that, Sir, it's an import" "they're all imports, they're made in Japan" aaargh.

Manufactured in Japan, imported to UK and registered in the UK...

LOL - but very true....

Unlike many modern Nissans (which are built in Sunderland and are even shipped back to Japan), the Z-cars were built in a separate Z factory in Japan and exported all over the world as necessary.... So those cars destined for the UK market were produced as such and imported into the UK by Nissan GB as ordered.

Does anyone know of a Mercedes, Audi or BMW being built in the UK? Exactly - we import them!!!

Here ya go

on the Left 89>late 94 S1

on the Right 94>99 s2/3/4

the cam pulleys can not be swapped around unless the Cams have been changed due to them being around 5mm Shorter on the Intake side
