Oil capacity with new filter, oil lines and cooler?????

Anyone know how much oil I should put in for first turn over to prime turbo's, oil lines and cooler???

I have New oil filter, Empty oil lines and slightly bigger oil cooler?

I was looking at cranking over using 3.4 ltrs and then check dipstick after a few minutes?

What is best way..... add 3.4 litres and then add more if it drops...??

Cheers....... Russ

Im planning on filling my oil cooler then clamping the hose. Then filling it to capacity via the dipstick, cranking it, starting it, then once it's had a tickover and all the lifters are primed leave it to settle and top it up. The amount that will be used to prime the turbo, lifters and cooler lines isn't going to take you down that far on the dipstick to be of concern imo.

Thanks Eggs...... I did wonder if I should have filled the cooler before clamping all the lines up....... but decided it would probably just run into the empty sump by the time I get this ready to crank......

I might try and use a short length of hose and funnel then fill the cooler like you said.......

I am going to use castrol magnatec 10w 40, just need to go and get some now......

Cheers Eggs.....

I would go for more like 4.5l and go from there. I think the engine holds almost 5l itself

Nooo - way too much Mikey!!

It's between 3.5 and 4 litres max; including the filter. So I'd say that to fill the oil cooler as well, then it'd be a little under 4. Put in 3.5 litres, crank the engine to fill the filter, prime the turbos and fill the cooler. Leave it 1/2 hour for the oil to settle back into the sump - it can take ages in a ZX - then re-check the level and add a little more if necessary.

You should not need any more than 1/2 a litre, once the cooler is full...

And Magnatec 10w40 is just fine too!

I have something to say............ It's better to burn out than to fade away..... :tt2:

Fill the filter with new oil as best as possible. Fill the sump until it is at the top line of the dipstick. Crank over until oil light goes out. Allow oil to drain back to the sump. Check level. Top up as necessary. Rinse & repeat if required. Only then start it up. Run it for a little while whilst checking for leaks. Switch off, allow oil to drain back to the sump, top up as necessary.

Obviously be aware of the amount of oil you're putting in, but simply use the dipstick first & foremost. Just don't put in 4.5L-5L, whatever you do

Why would it run back to the sump does your fill or drain from the bottom? Mines top feed and exit

mine is bottom feed and top exit....... it is off a turbo diesel 4x4 and twice the size of a standard cooler..... brand new in box off someone local to me from ebay.....lol

I couldn't resist for £5..... being the only bidder ........lol

As far as I know the Zed doesn't have a thermostatically controlled oil cooling system so it might be wise to put one in if you have a gigantic cooler. Ideally you don't want any cooling until the engines up to temp and that will hinder it.

Something like either of these would work if there isn't one as standard. These are just examples not Zed specific.

That's why I did bottom feed.... so it can't run back into engine through feed line and top return so it doesn't just drain back to the sump....... Should work same as a standard cooler..... Just a bit bigger.....lol

Not Gigantic...... only twice the size of the std one.....lol

I wasn't referring to the way it's fed and emptied, more that you have twice as much cooling which isn't always a good thing especially in winter

Ahhhh.... sorry....... didn't think about that.... I guess I will have to see how is goes..... I was looking at oil pressure and temp gauges for when I get enough funding together.... a few months away..... maybe Christmas present from her that must be obeyed and a gauge pod from the kids........lol

I would consider changing the oil cooler out, the Stillen one takes oil capacity from 3.5 litres to 4.5 As a precaution I have always added 0.5L every 500 miles and done a oil and filter change every 3500 miles.

My first 300ZX engine run out of oil after 3000 miles and threw a rod on me so learned my lesson the expensive way a long time ago

Been running this rad (with a few other engine upgrades :) ) and doing the oil as above for over 10 years and 40,000+ miles with no problems

yep - should have read the original question twice, you have a bigger cooler 4.5litres then !

Thanks to everyone for the advice...... bought some semi synthetic from a local motor factors I get trade in, just to get her running and will oil change as soon as I know the engine and turbo's are good...... this will only be in the car for set up and checking things over..... Then to fully synthetic...... I must admit the oil I drained out of the sump was like new...... clear, no deposits or dirt...... can't have ever been run on it......

I dumped the oil filter and fitted a new one.....

Just need to finish the last few pipes for power steering and It will be off the big wooden blocks at last......lol

My neighbour actually asked to play giant Jenga with my blocks the other day......cheeky git.....lolSDC10840.jpg

3.5 litres would be to oil holding capacity of a Jspec, the uk holds more. When filling the engine from squat typing will most likely end up using more. Think I used 4 litres. The best thing to do is put in 3.5 litres prime it let it settle. Check top up if required then fire over again before starting. Then keep a close eye in the level over the coming miles.pouring 5 litres straight in is a bad idea and will probably just causes seals to leak and your car to smoke.
